Akai inspected the entire unit and indicated the issue was the defroster in the freezer wasn't working and needed to be replaced. He quoted me what I thought was a very fair price but before I could say "Shut up and take my money!" he added that when he had unplugged the unit & plugged it back in, when starting up again the compressor sounded a bit suspicious. Thus he indicated I could go ahead and pay him to install a new defroster in the freezer, but it is only a matter of time before the compressor craps out and then replacing it would be over $1,000 and not worth it. So get this....he proposes that I defrost it the old school way by unplugging it, opening both the freezer & fridge doors, placing towels in front of the unit, and allowing all of the ice to melt and then just mop up all the water with towels and my wet vac and that would solve the problem for now. And in a few months when the issue occurs again I can just repeat the old school defrosting method until the compressor finally goes kaput, and then get a brand new refrigerator. Sure enough, I proceeded to do exactly what he recommended and lo and behold the fridge & freezer started working properly again. And I am all too happy to repeat every few months to squeeze every last bit of life from this old fridge until I have to get a new one. Akai could have very easily kept quiet about the compressor sounding sketchy and that it could fail in 3 weeks, 3 months, or 3 years and gotten a nice service order for replacing the defroster since he had already devoted the valuable time & effort to come to my house. However, he instead chose to be completely honest and forthcoming which is not as common as it should be and is very appreciated. I have saved his contact info and the next time I have any issues with any appliances he will be the technician I call. Knowledge and experience is great and there are a lot of qualified & knowledgeable appliance repair companies out there. However, also possessing honesty and integrity is why I strongly recommend Akai for any appliance repair issues.

So I was in need of a fridge so went and bought this stainless French door fridge he had for $500. Worked at the shop was cold. His truck was being repaired so he couldn't deliver the fridge that day told me he could "try" for the next day but I needed it ASAP so he offered to help me load it in my truck and I would just take it from the shop to my house. So we loaded it, the bottom vent cover got bent while we were loading it but didn't think anything of it. So I get it home put in the house plug it in everything looks good we're excited. Go back about 3 hours later to check on it and not cold at all. I text him telling him it's not cooling he says you have a 30 day warranty on it so I ask him to come look at it. He gets to my house and says I dropped it wen I unloaded it because the vent cover is bent. I told him no I didn't and that vent cover bent wen you and I loaded it in my truck. So then he said I laid it down while transporting it home bc he had to drain the oil and put in new oil to fix why it's not cooling. Told him no you helped me load it it was standing the whole 5 mins home from his shop. So he plugs it in all good back to working. He leaves. 32 days later not working again I call him he says bring it to the shop warranty only covers at the shop. That was never said for any of the purchases but ok whatever. Didn't have any help to lift in my truck didn't want to pay it down bc obviously you can't so I rent a Uhaul take it to him he says it'll be ready tomorrow told him I needed back today. Had a repair co come out prior to me bringing to him and they said the compressor was bad on it. I told him about that and he said he'd change the compressor and would charge me $50 for it bc it was out of warranty. Ok cool no problem. Said he'd deliver back to my house to the garage, cool no problem. Returned it said compressor not the problem so I plug it in and worked that night then next day not working again. I text him telling him and he tells me sorry couldn't figure out the problem and then said I don't know what to do. Asked if he could switch out with another equal value fridge of his he said no I can give you a discount on buying another fridge. So basically I'm out $500 never fixed it right in the 30 day warranty that he offers and wanted me to come buy another one at a "discounted rate" TERRIBLE BUSINESS! Gave 2 stars bc I got 2 appliances that do work fine from him. Returning customer and get treated like that. I'll never go back and won't recommend anyone to do business with this guy. So, I set about trying to find cheap, but reliable replacement appliances and after a bit of searching I stumbled upon Houston Appliances via google. At first it seemed a bit too good to be true. A 3 year warranty on a rebuilt and recertified that were over half off of similar retail machines - AND they would deliver. I figured for $400 plus delivery and tax I'd give them a shot. I'm so glad I did. They came out the very next day with all the fittings required to install my new appliances and even cautioned me on a problem with my hot water for the washer! The man doing the installations was really nice and efficient completing the job in record time. So far the washer and dryer have been going strong for almost two weeks with no problems. I haven't had a service call yet so I can't rate that part of them, but judging on their installation time I'd bet it's pretty good as well. I highly recommend these people if you need a cheap washer and dryer. It's a lot better than craigslist!

Beware of this store....they try heavily to push Progressive financing on you for your furniture…read morepurchase. Upon purchase of furniture they claim that under no circumstance are they liable to accept a return claiming that the furniture is now owned by Progressive and not them. The salesperson in store said the return policy is whatever Brent, the owner, says. Brent stated after the request for the return that the store has a no return policy. Good thing that policy is stated no where, not in the store, not on a receipt, not on their website. My girlfriend recently bought a mattress and adjustable bed frame from the company. They claimed endlessly about how the bed and frame would do wonders for her back problems. Initially the bed worked out fine, but after two weeks the bed was severely hurting her back. When she talked with AFW asking to return the deficient product, they claimed that they no longer owned the product and that instead of going through them for a return it would be up to the finance company to accept the return. Obviously the finance company said they were not in the furniture business and that they would only accept a return as directed by the company selling the product. The owners wife had the gaul to say that my girlfriend could stop making payments and ruin her credit as a means to return the product through the finance company. After researching the company, AFW, it seems there have been multiple furniture stores operating out of the same address in Katy. It could be their MO to screw over customers for a period of time and then simply change their name offering the same products always claiming a new grand opening sale. Just take a look at their storefront. The sign above the business says it all, a temporary cloth sign they can easily change out when it no longer suits them. Look elsewhere for your furniture and bedding needs. You've been warned...
