At lunchtime, the parking lot is like a beehive with cars and trucks of people working in the area pulling in and back out with freshly made sandwiches, salads (not green salads, but the kind made with real mayonnaise), and those huge dill pickles that used to stand around in barrels at old time delis. There are individual servings of desserts in a refrigerator, a smattering of fresh produce, fresh breads, snacks, beverages (including beer and wine, and there is even a tiny wine alcove), ice cream, birthday candles and other things you might need once in a while but can't seem to lay your hands on. In the mornings, there are house-made breakfast sandwiches in a warmer so people can grab and go. The people work hard and are kind and friendly. We stopped in on Memorial Day - along with everyone else in the area - to pick up potato salad, seafood salad, and macaroni salad, and they were prepared! It was all hands on deck at the deli, shelves were stocked, and there were extra checkout clerks. Whether it's at the unofficial kickoff to summer or on snowy day, the fine folks at Rum Brook Market are there to make your day just that much more satisfying.

They also have made to order deli selections and the staff prepares some excellent food. Service at Jake's deli's/Irving gas stations is generally excellent. The people in the staff try to ensure customer satisfaction. This Jake's is relatively new, after having been completely rebuilt after an unfortunate fire several years ago. You probably wonder why I've given them only two stars after a laudatory verbal description. I did so because of their lack of preparedness for the COVID-19 pandemic. I came in to order sandwiches and there was not one single customer wearing a mask, none of the staff except the cashier were wearing masks, there were no signs for social distancing, only one single sign outside of the door. If they had some measures in place in the middle of this pandemic, they would easily rate four stars. As it is right now, I would not recommend anyone to enter this Jake's deli except for a one or two minute visit.

I asked the nice cashier about it and she confided it's wisest for her not to comment on masks given some people who come would not take it well--and I knew precisely what she meant. Some pretty motley looking folks seem to frequent Jake's. A red-faced swaggery customer behind me--not wearing a mask--overheard me ask about masks in the store, and he starting taunting me for the type of mask I was wearing. I decided I didn't want to be anywhere near someone like that, or be in that store, so I left. Other than this clear problem with masks and sometimes quite seedy looking people working in the store (not the female cashiers who are nice and seem pretty normal) and sometimes pretty creepy looking folks hanging around the parking lot, Jake's has really good coffee, an interesting and wide variety of foods, and their homemade sandwiches tend to be delicious. It seems clear that staff in retail establishments in close contact to customers (less than 2 feet through the ice cream window) are required to wear masks per NH law.
