I was a little concerned that some of the posts here stated that Max may have some communication issues...but chose to use him after speaking with someone who recommended him. Our experience was Great. Max had no issues with communication and his team did a great job! Our job was slightly complicated because I wanted a hexagonal pergola, which is a slightly different animal. We also had a custom garden shed, potting area and square shade pergola built as one unit. We also had Max lay our floor with pavers. The project turned out better than expected. They were on time, worked consistently throughout the day. His workers are great, polite and know how to build. One of the cool things with using Max on a custom project like this is the two other bids I got required I go out and get drawings for the project. This added more $$ to the project. Max knows his stuff and was able to design the structures and build them. He had many suggestions which we followed, which was very helpful. He got what we wanted and made it happen. And after getting two previous bids, I knew Max's bid was on target. We are very happy we went with him and his team... I have never been more impressed with a contractor. First, even though the company is "Fencemax," they build amazing exterior decks and patios. I think they build fences too. The Bid Max's crew works at a set hourly rate (it's really reasonable when compared to say... a plumber). While, that doesn't seem like a big deal at first, after dealing with probably 12 different bids over the course of a remodel, all trying to gouge me where they can, I found this to be incredibly honest. He is the only contractor, out of 12, to hand me a bid that openly lists material costs (so you know then what you are paying in labor). And if along the way there's a problem, (if you are like me and own a 100 yr old house, there WILL be problems) Max will charge you time plus materials... He doesn't make prices up. The Design Max designed a heavy timber, tongue-in-groove, covered patio with a wrap around pergola, and composite deck for us. It looks even better than it sounds. It was made to fit the look and style of our house. It really moved us from being a ho'hum craftsman, to a standout on the block. We took other bids from a few guys with pretty impressive resumes, and their designs didn't even come close. Their bids were also twice as much. The Work He showed up on the day he said he would, and worked full days until the job was finished. He showed up with every piece of material he needed, and would even lay out by-the-day what he would get done. Other than lunch, I did not see him or his guys stop working, period. It also really impressed me that even though Max runs the business, and does the design, he also leads work on the project. Finish Product If you can't tell, we love the deck. So do the neighbors. I found Fence Max on the Trex website. I called a few of them; some flakes, and others my project was too small for them or way out of my budget. When I met Max, I liked him right away. Max was a pleasure to do business with and he had great ideas for my project and he knows what he's doing . Max built our deck in 2018 and we love it. I wrote a rave review about the deck and the experience. He and his crew did an amazing job. A year and half later we tried to get a quote on a smaller job and I guess this time around we weren't worth the trouble. We talked about the project and he said he would give us a quote by the end of the week. Multiple text and phone calls and he didn't have the courtesy to say he was too busy or not interested in the job. We NEVER heard back from Max. We wasted several weeks waiting for him rather than researching other contractors. It's unfortunate because we really liked him and his work but when he decides it's not worth the trouble he just blows you off. Wish he respected other people's time as much as his own. read more

Well, first of all, I've used Max for several projects. Initially, he does a good job. Our deck was well designed and engineered. But there were some installation issues that needed attention. After 3 months of attempting to get him out to fix these, I finally had to give up. He was a "no show" on 2 different occasions, with not so much as a phone call. He seemed to think my time waiting around on both days for him to show up was not important enough to even call. No apologies, no reschedule. Just blew it off. I have referred him to other customers, but now find out he is very negligent in the follow up, and not just with me. We will not be referring or using Max in the future. I have to agree with the prior posts regarding his work ethic, quality of construction, and design ability. I cannot give him the 5th star, however, due to two problems: One of the LED lights under the steps failed about a month after completion. I went over to J&W Lumber and with a sales associate went through at least 20 boxes till we found a light with the right color. But repeated calls, emails and texts have not been successful in Max getting out here to replace the bulb. Several times we were actually scheduled but he no -showed without notifying me. This has been going on over 5 months. In addition, an opening under the steps was created and not sealed. This is very surprising with his attention to detail elsewhere. Contact with him was not successful in getting this closed off. read more

Max was referred to us from another builder, who was to busy at the time to work with us. We had talked to two other builders and they faded away. Max came in, saw the plans, said we need to change a few things and we came out ahead with a fantastic deck. Max answered all questions, gave great ideas and put finishing touches on the deck one would not normally think of. His attention to detail is fantastic. I chose FenceMax mainly on account of them being recommended on the Trex web site. They weren't the cheapest bid I got, and they were booked a long way out, but I somehow got the impression they would work out. It turned out very well. I agreed a price for a very large Trex deck, and they put it in without any issues. They did a lot of prep work that would have been easy to skimp over, including placing nearly 10,000lbs of concrete for the footings and spa. The owner explained everything they were doing very clearly and I got a good education out of it. They worked around any issues that came up without any fuss. I am very happy with the quality of their work. Decks are more complicated than they seem, and you want a pro not some random guy with a truck and a Home Depot account. We tried to do business with Max, owner of Fence Max. We talked with him on the phone, he seemed personable and told us he knew how to do various other construction projects which we were needing as well as a fence. He made an appointment with us for 10:00 a.m. on a Monday and never showed up. We called him about 11:00a.m., our call went to voice mail. We asked him to please call us. We called one more time and left another message. The next day we called him in the morning and he answered. He said he could come out on Wednesday between 12:30 and 1:00. He said he could not make it Last Monday because he had to take his wife to the doctor. This is all fine but he should at least call us so that we don't have to sit and wait for him all day. He never showed up on Wednesday either. It is sad when you are trying to do business with someone and they don't even have the courtesy to call if they can't make it, but it is adding insult to injury when they do it twice in a row. read more

I review and select subcontractor bids and review their performance for a large department of defense contractor. Doing that requires evaluating price, technical ability and past performance. Max had the best price and past performance and delivered extremely well with his technical ability and follow-up.
