The first home was taken down to the studs for a completely redone infrastructure, roof, HVAC system, new windows and doors, an exterior facelift, new lighting throughout, a new kitchen, 2 renovated bathrooms, a newly designed interior courtyard and fireplace, and the addition of a powder bath. The exterior project included all new hardscaping, a new pool and hot tub, new landscaping and lighting in the front and back yards, and a large outdoor kitchen. I'm happy to report that both projects turned out beautifully. I greatly appreciated Lakewood's attention to detail to our design, their very well executed craftsmanship, and the problem solving mentality they brought to the table. As interior designers, it's very important to find solid and trustworthy contractors that you enjoy partnering with and look forward to doing repeat jobs with as they are very hard to come by. Tommy, Darrick and the Lakewood team are friendly, knowledgeable and help the projects go as smoothly as possible which is extremely reassuring to any homeowner. They are very competitively priced and value staying on schedule and on budget. I can't recommend Lakewood Builders enough. Several local contractors have wait lists of 6 to 9 months, particularly for moderately sized projects. Floor to Ceiling Inc. was one of 3 contractors who provided a bid to convert our garage into a music studio. We met with Bella, from, who ultimately became our project manager.  She communicates clearly and listens to her customer. She did not push her ideas to rack up higher costs. Bella was specific about a project start and end date. She assured us that her team would work continuously and not leave us dangling mid-project while they worked at another job site. Bella kept her word and Floor to ceiling essentially finished the project within the anticipated time frame. A slight delay was primarily caused by scheduling issues with the San Diego city building inspector. At every step through this process, Bella texted me so I knew what to expect and when to expect it. Floor to ceiling employs skilled craftsmen who arrived on time, were polite, wore face masks, and cleaned up the work site at the end of each day. I was particularly impressed with the two person team who completed the garage and bathroom flooring. In an old home, such as ours, floors are not always level and plumb. The finished tiled floors, however, are perfectly spaced and level. Bella pays close attention to the fine details and the he folks at Floor to Ceiling Inc. know what they're doing and do it well. I highly recommend them.

I looked through the San Diego yellow pages for water cleanup companies and only got carpet cleaners. Then I found a water damage restoration company that specialized in flood restoration and remediation (which is pretty specific) Andy, the owner of Pacific Restoration, showed up at the job himself, asked me if I had any questions, then began the water cleanup which took 7 full days! He politely went over all my concerns and delivered a spectacular job. He even threw in a carpet and paint upgrade free! It's nice to finally be able to say that I had an awesome experience with a general contractor in San Diego (I have horror stories if anyone is interested :-) Recommended to all A+++ Update on 11/12/2011: I have since hired Pacific Restoration for a full home remodel. The project includes a lot of high end work on my kitchen remodel, bathroom remodel, room addition and a bunch more. So far so good. I will keep you posted. Crossing my fingers, I know home remodeling is tricky business but based on all of my experiences with these guys, I'm pretty confident I will be happy. Update on 01/25/2012: My full home remodel was just completed! Let's start with the kitchen remodeling first, we installed beautiful slate floors, custom ivory countertops, large, open arched windows and all sub zero appliances built into custom enclosures. Our kitchen was nice before but after the remodel, it's one of our favorite places in the home to sit down and spend time together. Next, the master bedroom remodel and room addition. We added space to our master bedroom, remodeling it pretty much from the ground up. The theme and style is unique and different than the rest of our home so it really feels like you're entering new territory when you walk in. We added custom crown molding, changed the layout to provide more space and a roomier feel, took out the old shag carpet and replaced it with mostly marble and less carpet than before. The new carpet is much nicer and gives the room a more modern feel. The bathroom was remodeled too and we added a whirlpool bathtub with his and her bathroom suites. We also built in 60" LCD tv into the wall above the bath, so that we can relax and watch TV while we're in there. The remodeling job also included a room addition build out that was used to create an exquisite guest bedroom and bathroom for our family and friends to stay in when they visit us. The room addition really made a big difference to our home and adds a nice little guest sanctuary without putting our guests right on top of us in the main home.

I called around and talked with a few companies, and the difference between them and Pacific Restoration was like night and day. It was refreshing to hear a level of expertise, honesty and willingness to help way above and beyond what I would ever expect from a contractor. Andy told me I that I really didn't have a big problem, unlike the previous contractor, who wanted to charge me quite a bit of money for work I did not really need. Andy set me straight with an equipment rental and a level of comfort that I really needed after a stressful few weeks of worrying about my house. I would and will recommend this company to anyone that is in need of these types of services. Honesty and expertise is deserving of 5 stars!

Thomas Sommer is a great contractor and a genuinely fantastic human being…read more My parents spent a large portion of their savings to purchase a home in San Diego to be closer to family. Soon after they moved to their new home which was built only 3 years before they purchased it, it became clear there was a signings that construction defect on the second floor with a large leak into the ceiling which was due to incorrect installation of a sliding door. This was a known defect which had not been transparently disclosed by the prior owner. We attempted to contact the contractor who had built the home without success. After months of meeting with other contractors to get this door replaced and reinstalled, we found Sommer Construction. Thomas met with us and was incredibly empathetic - he insisted that rather than repair it himself - he would help us contact the home builder and facilitate the repair being done under warranty. When we first heard this idea, we didn't really want to go down this path because we didn't think there was any way this could work. Given the long ordeal, we simply wanted to pay for it and have it repaired without the hassle of arguing and fighting with someone (especially given that Covid was ongoing). After speaking to Tom and considering how expensive the repair was going to be, we thought why not give it a chance. Tom was convinced that this repair should be repaired under warranty by the person who built the home. It seemed to good to be true that someone would go through all of this hassle and go out of their way to help us get this done. This just speaks to the kind of person Thomas is, he tracked down the original builder and held him responsible for the repair. He then guided us through the negotiations and repairs with the original contractor - taking time out of his busy schedule all because he is a genuinely good and empathetic human being. It is so refreshing to meet someone like this and we cannot express how grateful we are to Thomas Sommer. He gives contractors a good name. If you read the other reviews you will quickly see that this is just the way that Thomas is and how he runs his company. The more we got to know Thomas we found that he is simply a man of principle first and foremost. If we ever need any project done, he is the first person we would call for sure! Cannot recommend him highly enough.

There's only one person in the house and with the pandemic, nobody else has been here. There isn't much traffic in that room. I contacted Thomas on 1/11/21. I asked about a warranty and explained about the grout and that the floor was creaking. He was a bit defensive - he'd done the job right - but said to call him back in a week and we'd look into it. I called again on 1/20/21 as requested; no response. I called again 1/28; no response. Ghosting your clients when there is an issue with your work is really problematic. Even if the warranty is over, it's best to find out what has happened. For this, I'm going to hire someone else to regrout and I think the problem should be solved - I've since realized the creaking is coming only where the tiles are missing grout so it should be an easy fix. That said, you should think twice about using Sommer Construction; what if the situation is bigger? And, if it is, you can always claim against his Contractors bond with the State of CA to get resolution if he ghosts you.
