Poor communication, poor quality work, and poor professionalism. Probably the worst business I've ever associated with. We used Gus and his business because my neighbor decided to replace our shared fence. First of all, the job took longer than expected, there was no communication after requesting for him to let me know when he wanted to start work so I can put my dogs away so they don't run out while the fence is wide open. He never communicated when and how long they were working, unless I asked multiple times, definitely no respect and common courtesy for my plans. The quality of work was sloppy and they never clean up after themselves at the end of the day. Discrepancies were identified in which I still owed a remaining balance but never paid because I wasn't satisfied with the job and was told would be fixed and have not received a response after multiple attempts. I paid Gus $475 to install a gate. He did not install the gate for three months and that was the main issue, not the money! Then he took four months and only gave me a partial refund. He refunded me $250 and to this day has not refunded the other amount. He is a thief. Do not hire him! read more

Worked with Gus through Lowe's and can not recommend less. During installations they broke multiple irrigation and lighting lines throughout our neighbors and our back yard and installed doors that both fell out of the wall as well as no longer close now that the weather changed. We have been trying to get this fixed for the past 6 months with little progress and once they finally responded and "fixed" the front gate, installed a knob that does not work and within two weeks the door no longer stays close. Gus was a very kind man in the begging of our conversation, and then things became sour real quick. He came to put a fence up at our place no strings attached I told him I would use him to put up our real fence but for now I need a temporary fence. I never called him back to put up our final Fence because our landscapers did it for us at no charge and I paid him for the work he did so I didn't think I had to call him back and let him know what was going on, I was wrong. Gus then called me and said I need to pick up my temporary fence then if you're not going to use me to put up your final fence, I said you never said you were loaning me that fence Gus, I thought that's what I was paying for? He then said no you were paying for labor. He then threatened if I didn't give him more money he would put a lean on my house, he simple didn't know that I own a business myself and that is not possible with no contract into place SMH. I don't do business with people like this. Be clear about what it is you're doing and make a contract don't expect your clients to know the way fencing works. I am a honest person and I always pay my dues, however I was not going to give you money when I clearly thought what I was paying for was the labor and the temporary fence. Fence masters put up fencing at my location and they were 2 young men doing it and they were extremely rude. I left for a short time and when I returned they had parked their truck in my driveway taking not one but both parking spaces. It was inconsiderate enough parking in one space but they parked their large truck right in the middle so it was taking two spaces. When I asked if it was their policy to park in such a way, he said yes. I couldn't believe how rude they were. Also the fence itself is very flimsy compared to the standard wood fence. A large dog I was fostering was almost able to knock the whole gate down by jumping up on it. Trust me I would have fired them but it was my landlord who hired them. read more

Gus to the rescue! We had a fence installed by Lowe's via a contractor that was, quite frankly, botched. Gus could tell that they hadn't had much experience in installing fences when he came to assess the repairs. He knew what needed to be done, but informed me that it would take some time as supplies are low and demand was high, thanks to the pandemic. After a couple months of back and forth from Lowe's, Gus, out of the blue, calls me on a Friday and says "Hey, we're 20 minutes away! Want me to fix up that fence for yuh?" Scheduling with Lowe's was torture. Something is currently wrong with their customer support for installations. Gus's call gave me a sigh of relief. So, he shows up and re-aligns half my fence, closes gaps that were large enough for my children to climb through, fixes portions that were badly installed and cleans up what the previous installers had left behind in a matter of a couple days. I found Gus on Craigslist, and had him take a look at replacing the entire fence with 6-ft board on board cedar, picture frame style.. as well as adding another gate and an extra fence section for a dog run. The day he came out to take a look he promised to have my quote in my email that night, and sure enough, right on time. I got several other quotes, some higher some lower, but Gus was right on target price-wise. I chose him because he runs a family business and was extremely personable and professional. (Oh btw, he doesnt drive a 2012 F-250 Super Duty with a fresh wax job... like one contractor who tried to rip me off). I purchased a house in Rancho Del Rey which needed the neighboring fence replaced. The house next door was a rental property managed by a real estate company so this can possibly pose as a challenge. Luckily, they were responsive with my request. The real estate company worked with me and came to an agreement with the property owner to have the shared fence replaced 50/50. The company referred Fence Masters for the project since they had done business with them in the past. I met with Gus to provide a shared estimate of the fence. I have a pool so Gus advised there are city requirements which require the fence be a certain minimum height. While speaking with Gus, it was very clear to me that he was an experienced professional who knows what he's doing. So I also asked Gus to provide me a separate estimate to replace all four of my fence gates, make two of them double doors and stain all newly installed wood work. The quote was better than I anticipated. Gus provided options on how I wanted my fence and gates built. He was able to move the fence-gate by the meters outward so the fence is flush with the house. He also provided options in wood and stains. While Gus was working on my fence, the quality and appearance of his work was exceptional! I asked if he did other wood work such as tearing down my front patio and replacing it with all new wood. And he did! He also painted the front patio to match my house! Gus did a great job on my fence and patio and completed the work in 3 days. The wood we selected was the best he offered and the contrasting look of the fence along the fence cross-post looks great! UPDATE: Not only did we have the issues written about below with Gus, this weekend (1.5 months after the work was complete and PAID IN FULL) he fraudulently charged our credit card $2200 out of nowhere. We were successful in disputing the claim but only bc we watch our credit cards closely. DO NOT HIRE or pay in cash. CAUTION- do not pay Gustavo until you are completely satisfied with the work performed. Gustavo installed a fence in our backyard. I requested the same fence as our neighbors because their fence runs along one side of our yard and I wanted the other side to match. Fence Masters installed our fence quickly but got the wrong decorative tops to the posts so it didn't match our neighbors. Gustavo said he would bring the correct tops and his son took pictures to make sure he got the correct ones. Then, my mistake, I submitted the final payment. Since then Gustavo has not brought the correct tops and he ignores my emails. I waited to post this email in hopes he would do the right thing. He didn't. After some research I ultimately selected him to install a fence in my front yard and privacy in my back, as of yet, I have no issues with the back (doesn't mean it won't happen), but my front yard was a friggen disaster. He had his two sons doing the work, I installed in the front because I have a 3 year old grandson and a dog, I wanted to be comfortable in letting them be in the front. The fence panels were never fully secured into the post, (which was confirmed by his son) so you could push on any one of the panels and they would completely pop out giving access to my g-son and dog to get out. Trust me had there been any issue with them getting out, we would be handling this much differently. The point caps on the fence were always popping off, the setting of the panels on the fence were so wobbly my fence always looked crooked, not a pretty site. My biggest issue was the huge lack of communication. Gus would literally take weeks to respond much less arrange to repair the issues. His justification was he lived in Fallbrook. Then DONT provide work to customers in South Bay if you cannot commit or accommodate because the location is an inconvenience. He sent his son to do the repairs, he left without completing the work, again took months to come back, they again did an incomplete repair job. After about the fourth time I had already researched taking him to small claims court, he then showed up very quickly. Did he complete the repairs, NO he did not, I would send him pictures but the worst part was when he or his sons would come to repair I did not even know they were here. No advanced arrangement, schedule or even a phone call. Gus would tell me they came when I tried to follow up. This was hugely inappropriate, aside from not allowing me to be available to review the work and or show where the problems were, which is probably why it was always incomplete. Bottom line is, he is charming enough to get the job but absolutely horrible customer service and communication. There are plenty of fencing companies out there, so you have choices. I personally would NOT recommend their services to anyone. You get what you pay for. We all want to be prudent but more importantly you want quality, and that is not what Fence Masters provides. NOT A GOOD CHOICE. I also highly recommend if the work he has does is sub-grade, incomplete, or dissatisfactory and he is avoiding his responsibility to resolve any issues, make the effort to take him to court, he needs to be accountable for his so called services. I must have contacted over a dozen companies for quotes and Fence Masters came in by far the lowest. To top it off, I absolutely loved Gus and his sons. They were hard working, very quick, and my fence is beautiful. I waited 6 months before I wrote a review because I wanted to see how the fence held up. We are by a canyon in a VERY windy area. I hired him last Sep and he did not built my gate right way. So it did not work after a couple days later they built. I emailed and called him then he said I will come over to fix it. Gus and his 5 men were a pleasure to work with. I've been a contractor and landlord for 25 years. Their patience with a thorny boundary issue with a neighbor was also appreciated. My whole experience was perfect , until the crew got the final check . I'm still shocked at the hasty exit, no concern or double check of the work site debris and building materials left behind. No follow up on my satisfaction, and even when I spoke with Gus about the materials left behind, he said they would be back to pick up materials and repair an issue with the poor cut and installation the last 2 boards, which were cut without the correct tool and were left jagged and poorly installed. Great work just don't give them the money until you have inspected every bit of the job on completion.
