The Paper Mouse is a charming independent stationery shop and gift boutique in West Newton that is…read moreeasy to spend more time in than you originally planned. The store has a warm, inviting atmosphere with thoughtfully arranged displays that make browsing enjoyable. Every section feels carefully organized, and there is always something interesting to discover whether you are shopping for yourself or looking for a unique gift. The selection is what really makes this shop stand out. There is a great variety of high-quality notebooks, fountain pens, journals, greeting cards, and art supplies, along with plenty of creative desk accessories and small gifts. I especially enjoyed looking through the Japanese stationery and beautifully designed paper goods, which are not the kind of items you typically find in a larger office supply store. The card and wrapping paper selection is also impressive, making it an easy place to stop when you need something a little more thoughtful for a birthday, holiday, or special occasion. One thing I appreciated was how curated everything felt. Instead of being packed with endless products, the store carries a collection that reflects quality and creativity, with a mix of imported stationery, locally made items, and unique gifts. It makes browsing feel more personal, and I found myself noticing details in products that I probably would have overlooked in a larger retailer. The atmosphere adds just as much to the experience. The relaxed setting, friendly staff, and inviting displays make it easy to take your time exploring each section. The Paper Mouse also hosts workshops and creative events, which fit naturally with the store's focus on art, design, and craftsmanship and help make it feel like more than just a place to shop. Overall, The Paper Mouse is one of those neighborhood stores that is worth visiting whether you are a stationery enthusiast or simply looking for a thoughtful gift. The combination of carefully curated products, welcoming atmosphere, and creative spirit makes it a shop I would happily return to whenever I am in the West Newton area.

Kudos to Curate for braving the pandemic and bringing a new gift shop to Cushing Square at a…read morechallenging time! It's conveniently located in the heart of the Square near Savino's, Ovenbird, and the Spirited Gourmet, my other favorite neighbor businesses. Curate is a bright little shop with a variety of classy and fun gifts, stationary, and home items that change with the seasons. I usually pop in to buy a card and a chat with the owner. I've found gifts for hosts, housewarmings, and occasions in between. I especially like their candle selection, many of which are soy based. They carry amazing scents from a small business in Rhode Island, with candles and lotions that smell exactly like the seashore. After a cousin fell in love with one of them, I bought a bagful at the end of the season clearance to treat relatives to a scent party. They also carry British Christmas crackers when in season (like now!). These are so hard to find! The crackers (beautiful wrapped cylinders that pop open when pulled to reveal little gifts) delighted my family when I brought them to our holiday gatherings last year. (Note that crackers contain a tiny amount of gunpowder and technically can't go on a flight, something I had tried before...!) Curate's products tend towards the classy side with mid to higher prices to match. Sometimes I just go to poke around and see what's new. They have some baby gifts and customized items for Belmont and Watertown, but if you want a wider selection, I would go elsewhere. The owner has also kindly offered to order things that I couldn't find directly in the shop, but I haven't tried that option yet.

I found a very thoughtful selection of gifts and items I wanted for myself at Curate. The…read moreshopkeeper was personable and friendly but not intrusive. I look forward to seeing what other treasures are offered from this shop.
