James Wu HVAC And Plumbing - Bosch 5 ton ultra low temp system

James Wu HVAC And Plumbing

(20 reviews)

After a 3-yr search and MANY bids for a new HVAC, we settled on James Wu, who installed our system…read morelast month and proved the research paid off. Below are things I wanted to know before choosing a contractor; maybe it will be helpful for you. Our situation: 100+ yr old home with current boiler in basement. We recently insulated our walk-up attic - that would both freeze and melt items stored there - with closed-cell spray foam (more research there), added drywall and will use it for storage. This is where the air handler and ERV (for ventilation) went. Our upstairs is now ducted, with one vent running through a closet on the 2nd floor to 1st floor. We also added a Mitsibishi floor mount unit and a ceiling cassette on 1st floor. So, we had a VARIETY of equipment installed, requiring a contractor experienced in not only ducting, but mini-split installs with both a ceiling cassette and floor mount unit. We did not want the large wall mount mini split units. Our walls/ceilings are PLASTER, (metal wire mesh and cement-based): cutting them is a JOB. And, we wanted the floor mount unit RECESSED. COST - James was in-line with our other bids, which came in between 27k and 39k, largely depending on equipment recommended, with ceiling cassettes costing more. Many contractors simply would not install them, and wanted to run ducts in the corners of all upstairs rooms to first floor, which to us was a last resort. COMMUNICATION - James is very responsive to texts, emails, and even more importantly, he is a fantastic communicator. He is very calm, not pushy, explains things in an easy-to-understand way that clearly shows he knows his business. I actually told my husband after he left for the first time, "I think we may have found our guy" just based on his personality and knowledge. He's likeable, which isn't a requirement, but definitely helps. EXPERTISE - This is what truly sets James apart. Our needs were fairly complex, requiring interior ducting, 2 outside units with exterior line sets, and recessed ceiling units, but also RECESSING the inside floor unit into an interior wall. We've overseen several renovation projects recently and could tell these guys knew what they were doing. Also, they were perfectionists, and paid attention to details you don't often find with contractors. DEPENDABILITY - Not a single missed appt. Showed up on time with clear communication. The job took a week. He also helped with Masssave paperwork. They cleaned up after themselves each day, which we appreciated. KNOWLEDGE - Extremely versed in Mitsibishi equipment. He's a Diamond Contractor, which extends our warranty, but we'd have chosen him regardless. Every question I had about these units (cassette and floor unit operation, air handler, ERV, outdoor units, thermostats...) he knew the answer to. When I researched anything specific online, from multiple and trusted sources, I found the info he'd given me to be correct. I trust his knowledge and I don't automatically do that. One example: our ceiling cassette has an internal thermostat and it's off by several degrees regularly. I researched it and found we likely need an external thermostat separate from the unit to measure the room's temp. I texted James a photo showing the inaccurate reading and his immediate reply, "you need an external thermostat. I'll install one." That's what I'm talking about. INTEGRITY - Example: After the permit inspector left, James explained his philosophy on inspections. Each city apparently has different requirements. He learned several years ago how strict one particular city was, requiring a blower test to determine air tightness and the passing score was 4% or less. He got 4.1% and city wouldn't pass it. This required a lot more time/energy to go through everything and another test and more $$. So, now James says to his guys, "We install to the strictest inspection every time, regardless of the specific city's requirements, so we don't ever have to redo anything." In our case, the city didn't need a blower test but if they did, I feel confident we would have passed! I don't often take time to write reviews, esp this lengthly, but I felt it was warranted here. Finding an HVAC contractor is HARD; it's time-consuming and complicated. And a lot of money. Three years of research finally led us to James and now, looking back, it was worth the wait and headaches in research. I would highly recommend anyone in the market for a new HVAC, especially if it involves Mitsibishi and especially ESPECIALLY if it involves recessing any equipment like ceiling cassettes or wall units, to consider James Wu. He and his team are uniquely skilled in their work.

Extremely happy with the services provided by James. He installed a 6 unit/2 compressor heat pump…read moresystem in our 150+ year old house in about two days, demonstrating superior knowledge of the system and suggesting actually aesthetically pleasing choices for ducting etc. that many other contractors ignored. Price was reasonable for the scope and system specs, and James was extremely responsive and patient throughout the whole process. We also really appreciate James's help coordinating with MassSave (including some truly terrible inspections), ultimately enabling us to claim our full rebate. I'd highly recommend working with James, and we will continue to reach out to him for all our HVAC needs!

I have to give their management credit: They saw my review, reached out and yesterday service manage Jeff called me. It's rare these days for someone to really listen to how things looked on my side of the road and to Jeff's credit he did that. Not only that we reached and agreement regarding what i felt was high pricing two two of the three components they replaced on my AC system. In addition he mentioned that they are moving away from the foreign call center customer service--this is a good thing. Who wants to feel if they get disconnected they can't call the person back? All this reassured me that despite some issues they are getting themselves on track and that they cared enough to make things right for me.

Extremely Disappointing Service -- Poor Communication, Questionable Pricing, and a Complete Lack of…read moreFollow-Through I hired this company to address a water leak in my steam heating system. Initially, I believed the problem was with two steam vents that I had purchased myself but was unable to remove because they were seized. The company charged me $450 to install two vents that I supplied, a job that took approximately one hour. Unfortunately, replacing the vents did not resolve the problem. We subsequently identified what appeared to be a clogged line beneath one of the vents. I requested an estimate to repair the problem and was instead given a proposal to replace both lines for approximately $2,150. When I asked why both needed replacing when only one appeared to be clogged, the technician's explanation was simply that the other one could eventually clog. I explained that I wasn't comfortable spending that amount of money unnecessarily and that, as the homeowner, I believed it was my prerogative to determine what work I wanted performed. I also indicated that I might seek another estimate. Later that evening, I spoke with the technician again and explained that I would like to move forward, but requested a revised estimate to replace only the clogged line. He assured me he would speak with the office and get back to me. A week passed. Nothing. What followed was an extraordinarily frustrating exercise in trying to communicate with this company. Their telephone system requires you to leave a message and wait for someone to return your call, with no indication of when that might happen. If you're unavailable when they call, the entire process starts over. The only person with whom I was able to maintain any consistent communication was the manager of their answering service, primarily through text messages. Eventually, he provided a revised price of $1,850 to replace just the one clogged line. This raised yet another concern. The original estimate was $2,150 to replace both lines. Removing what I understood to be approximately 60% of the proposed work resulted in a price reduction of only $300, or roughly 14%. I also asked the manager whether he had the original estimate prepared by the technician so we could compare the two proposals. He responded that they were attempting to contact the technician. I never received the original estimate, an explanation of the pricing, or any meaningful follow-up. Once again, communication stalled. Finally, arrangements were made for someone from their service department to call and discuss my concerns. I explained that I would be available around noon, and they agreed to call at approximately that time. I sat with my phone in my lap from 11:30 a.m. until 1:15 p.m., waiting for a call that never came. What makes this especially troubling is that I have three family members living in my home, a steam heating system that needs repair, and winter approaching. This is not a cosmetic improvement or an optional renovation. It is a necessary repair to keep my home heated. I cannot help but come away with the impression that this company is more interested in the size of the job than in providing responsible, attentive service to its customers. Whether that is actually their motivation, I cannot say, but their conduct has certainly left me feeling that way. I have no objection to paying a fair price for professional work. What I do object to is being encouraged to authorize work that has not been adequately justified, receiving a revised price that raises legitimate questions, and then being repeatedly ignored when I ask for an explanation. My recommendation is simple: Look elsewhere. I cannot recommend this company strongly enough as one to avoid. Their questionable recommendations, unexplained pricing, repeated failures to communicate, disregard for scheduled callbacks, and apparent indifference to a customer facing a legitimate heating problem have been profoundly disappointing. A company that charges professional rates should be expected to deliver professional service, accountability, and communication. In my experience, this company failed on all three counts.

WARNING: Two Years Without Service, Then an Unexpected $916 Oil Delivery and a Threat of Small…read moreClaims Court I strongly encourage Massachusetts homeowners to think twice before signing up with MacFarlane Energy, particularly for its automatic oil delivery and Value Plan. I became a customer in 2022. My last oil delivery was March 18, 2024, and my last annual boiler tune-up was February 9, 2024. For approximately TWO YEARS, MacFarlane made no deliveries, performed no annual maintenance and never once contacted me about my account. Its own Value Plan documentation explicitly includes an annual heating-system tune-up, yet I received no further tune-ups. During that time, I began purchasing oil elsewhere to keep my tank above 50%. After nearly two years without deliveries, maintenance or communication, I reasonably believed my relationship with MacFarlane had ended. Then, on March 26, 2026, MacFarlane unexpectedly delivered 152 gallons of oil at approximately $6.03 per gallon, charging me $916.84 during a period of extremely high oil prices. No advance phone call, no email and no opportunity to decline the delivery or its price. Now MacFarlane is demanding $971.84 and has escalated the dispute toward small claims court. I dispute these outrageous charges. Why should a company be able to go nearly two years without providing the annual maintenance included in its service plan, never communicate with its customer, then suddenly resume deliveries and demand nearly $1,000? I believe MacFarlane's handling of my account raises serious concerns under Massachusetts Chapter 93A, which prohibits unfair or deceptive business practices. I intend to pursue the appropriate consumer-protection channels. I have retained my invoices, service-plan documentation, account records and correspondence to substantiate my experience. MY WARNING TO HOMEOWNERS: Do not assume that years without deliveries, maintenance or communication mean MacFarlane has closed your account. Read every cancellation provision, get everything in writing and make sure you're actually receiving the services promised in your contract. They will show up and fill your tank without talking to you in 2 years or without any warning. Based on my experience, I would never recommend MacFarlane Energy. I believe its handling of my account, its failure to provide annual maintenance and its response to this billing dispute are completely unacceptable.

Basically, Aundrey came here for less than one hour and cleaned the dust off the the coils of both of my air conditioners for $650 and didn't even complete the job. He did not have a wet/dry vac so he used mine. He did not bring a ladder so he used mine. He did not provide replacement filters. Breakdown of the cost: From the invoice- 'Service call fee covers technician's trip to the job site, including travel time and transportation costs.' I asked Aundrey where he came from. He said from the office which is right here in Newton. 2.6 miles. 8 minutes. = $150 First Air Conditioner: He diagnosed it immediately. Then he cleaned the coils with a brush and he used my vac as well. Look, I have no problem with him using my equipment. I just never had a worker not have his own tools. I had already bought a new filter for this air conditioner so he didn't have to replace it. Total time, about 15 minutes. = $250 Second Air Conditioner which is in the attic. There is nothing in the attic but the air conditioner unit and we do not go up there ever. You need a ladder to get up there. Aundrey didn't have one. He used one of mine. Same problem. Also, This unit needed a new filter as well and it's a different size than the one downstairs. Aundrey left it without a filter and gave me the size of the filter I should get so that I can install it myself. Again, I can't get up in the attic because I'm physically limited. So my air conditioner is currently running right now with no filter. So, he cleaned the coils for about 20 minutes and left the job undone. = $250. Invoice: $150 Travel Time and Transportation costs. $250 Coil Cleaning and installing a filter that I provided. $250 Coil Cleaning and leaving the unit without a filter _________ $650 Oh, and this nonsense about them getting back to you in 10 minutes, it's an automatic text that tells you to call them. I called after I didn't hear from them for an hour or so. That's a big sum when Aundrey took an hour total including his drive time of 8 minutes and the gas he must have used to go 2.6 miles and then not finish the job while using my tools.

BEWARE of Albortz: **Sabotaged my HVAC to Create Repeat Business**…read more If you're in the market for HVAC services, I strongly urge you to steer clear here. Over the course of a couple of years, I've encountered multiple incidents that seem to point to deliberate sabotage of my heating and cooling system. I also have PROOF in my pictures. I'm somewhat handy, and if I was not, I would have been taken advantage of even more. Here's my story: **Incident 1:** It all started when my AC unit broke down during a heatwave. I had a newborn at home, so I needed help fast. Despite being on the pricier side ($500 for the visit), they were the only ones available quickly. The technician "fixed" the issue and tried hard to sell me a brand-new unit--despite the fact that my current one was still functioning. I brushed it off as a sales tactic. However, when the weather turned cold, I realized my **heat wasn't working**. I'm a bit handy, so I took a panel off to inspect the unit, and what do I find? The **gas line had been turned off at the panel**! It's important to note that the heater worked just fine before this service, so the only possible culprit was the technician. Had I not caught this myself, I would have likely been convinced that the entire system needed replacing--costing me even more money. **Incident 2:** Later, I did end up getting a new HVAC system (from a different company). However, my diverters (which control airflow) stopped working, blowing a fuse. Once again, no one else was available, so I had to call Alborz again. I was skeptical after last time, but thought maybe it was possibly an accident... This time, I was on high alert and watched him closely. He fiddled around and had me go check the thermostat downstairs while he "worked on the unit." Reluctantly, I complied. Sure enough, when summer arrived, **the AC stopped working again**. **Proof of Sabotage:** After some investigation, I discovered the technician **deliberately disconnected a wire** in my unit, which is why the AC wasn't working. I have photographic proof showing the disconnected wire and the work area, demonstrating this malicious action. --- **Final Warning:** It's clear to me this company has a pattern of **sabotaging equipment to generate more business**. These aren't simple mistakes; they're calculated actions designed to mislead homeowners into believing their systems need more work or replacement than is necessary. If you're considering hiring them, think twice--you may end up paying more than you bargained for, both in money and frustration.
