Fay Da Bakery has been on my list to visit, so it was a wonderful happenstance to come upon it on one of my West Village strolls. I quickly ducked in, ordering its famed mango mochi and a lychee slushie with boba. The mochi was soft as a cloud. It was the most delicately tender mochi I've ever had. The cream inside was fluffy and lightly sweetened. The bits of mango were tart. Overall, the texture was heavenly, but it didn't have as strong of a mango flavor. The slushee, too, was not as sweet and not as lychee-forward, although I did like the amount of boba that they gave me (which was lots) and the softness of them. Would I return to Fay Da? No, at least not to this location. I've crossed it off my list, and I will leave it at that. read more

Before watching a screening at the IFC Center, we ducked into Fay Da Bakery for hot drinks and sweet treats. The drinks come out quick, so it's perfect for grab-and-go. There isn't seating inside this Fay Da, so we walked over to the little park nearby and sat on one of the benches. He went with a hot taro boba and I went with an almond milk tea boba. Wow!! They take card here now. I've been going to this spot for years but stopped going because I never have cash. This week I went in and I learned they take debit or credit in addition to cash. For those craving the Hong Kong experience of getting fresh baked goods and an egg tart, this is probably the best place in the area to go. It really gives traditional vibes with the plate and grabber tongs. The prices are also what they should be for the pastries which means you can get a good number for the same price of just a couple items at fancier bakeries. I got maybe 6 buns for $15 . The taste has the level of nostalgia I'm looking for and the selection is exactly what I want as well - no major frills but everything is delicious. In the mood for Chinese bakery? Robust collection of assorted baked goods. Most items are bread based and any cream in between is often semi sweet or neutral. Unlike Italian or german bakeries the items are typically not as sweet and some may even be savory with fillings in the savory goods with ham, sausage, and chicken. Prices have gone up since covid as the milestone for all Chinese restaurants and bakeries to catch up to pricing of their non-Chinese competitors but still slightly lower. Service is typically fast although sometimes confusing as locals just wander in and cut then line even when lines may be out the door, and service staff says nothing and just serves them. This happens in many Chinese establishments whether it is because those people who cut lines have no respect, etiquette for order, or completely oblivious. The staff may be in the same train of thought although added that they could be turning a blind eye because the patron is a regular (I kid you not). Always on ground level. All take out. Some have limited seating but not all. Not very ADA compliant as counters are so high and no restrooms. Street parking only (good luck with that) Seems clean. Cheap eats are far and few between in the West Village so this popular Chinese bakery chain is lowkey a godsend. $2.25 for a hearty steamed pork & veggie bao makes the perfect breakfast (or light lunch) especially if you're on a budget. Prefer classic scallion braid/breads to the green pea and scallion braid, as the peas seemed to dry it out a bit. We had some work in the Greenwich area and needed before heading to the Gym. This bakery is located right at the entrance of the subway (A, C, D; B, D, F, M). It is easy to miss this gem on the busy street. I chose to get my birthday cake from this place back in October, which is a big decision. You want your cake to be tasty, the right size, and with flavors that can be enjoyed by all... Named after Darth Fay-da, I'm not sure if me finding this bakery (which I took my little tiny Sammi Puffle into, in her little pink carrier) was destiny or just a twist of fayda. It's better to burn out than to Fay Da way, and that's what I found out when I came to this cute little Greenwich Village Bakery. In terms of products, and also some of the customers, this is a lovely little Bakery - and I didn't really want to like it because some of the prices are a little on the high side, and the server was extremely unfriendly to me. But as it happened every bite of the spectacular lemon bread was dreamy and delicious and there is no way I can give them less than five stars considering that they are putting out products as good as 85 Degree Bakery, without being a massive chain. I knew this bakery closes at 5pm, so I called ahead of time asking that if I make it there by 4:55pm, would they still be open to sell me 8 cakes? She said yes, we close at 5pm. So, I rush from NJ to NYC to try to get these cakes and arrive at 4:48pm. Guess what? The metal bars were 3/4 down and they closed BEFORE 5pm. I called 3x and nobody picked up even though I saw workers inside. I knocked on the glass and metal gate to get their attention. A woman comes to the front and says they're closed at 4:51pm. I told her I had called an hour earlier to ask if they'd still be open at 4:55pm to sell cakes to me, but she kept waving that they're closed. Thank you, Fay Da Bakery, for making me trek in the middle of this frigid winter storm to your bakery only to have you lie to me on the phone and then to my face that you're closed. This Fay da is located in a convenient location right out of the West 4 train station next to the IFC. Fay da is a chain and this one is quite clean but still small. There are not tables to sit in and not everything is labeled all the time. The area with the pastries is one aisle so only one person can fit at a time. This means when it gets crowded it feels crowded. When I entered it was empty and when I left the store was full!! There are more cakes and stuff near the counter where you order. The location is right next to the entrance/exit of the West 4th station, and you can convenniently see it to your right as you walk out from the SW corner. Items include a wide selection of baked goods and cakes, with many of the classic Hong Kong treats such as pineapple bun, egg tarts, sponge cakes, Swiss rolls, "Lo Por Bang" (or wife's melon cake) and many more. They also have seasonal items such as moon cakes, but I really am not a fan of that, so never got to try. I am glad that they have a locaiton outside of Chinatown or Flushing in Queens to make it handy to grab a bite on the go when I am in the area. They are cash only as well. I recommend everything except the pork and cabbage bun - only bc it doesn't have that much filling. Everything else was so delicious! I also got a hot coffee that came with milk and sugar which I wasn't expecting and not how I usually take my coffee but it honestly hit the spot. You take a plastic tray and tongs and grab whatever you want from the shelves. When you're done picking what you want. you take your tray to the register and they will bag everything for you. I missed this place a lot. It's close to NYU so I used to go there to grab some pastries for lunch. It's a tiny Chinese bakery and only accepts cash. But the goods are really cheap ($2-3 per item) - basically if you spend $15 you don't have to buy anything for the next three days ... jk My top picks are Taro Puff 芋头酥: hands down the BEST taro puff in the city. Taro pastries are not that common because it's difficult to make. I wasn't a big fan of taro but this is just life changing. The filling was super creamy and moist but it wouldn't get too sweet. The dough was paper thin and I could get the fresh taro taste at first bite. I wanted to try taro mochi 芋头糯米糍 but I never found them in this franchise. I don't know if they stopped making it. Steamed Lotus Wrap 珍珠鸡: If you want something savory, try this! this is a classic Hong Kong dim sum made with chicken, mushroom and sticky rice. They kept it warm in the small oven. I would recommend eating it warm because the lotus leaf smells good when it's hot. Also, it got sold out very quickly. Roast Pork Puff 叉烧酥: the pork puff was kept in the same oven with lotus wrap and other buns. I am a big fan of pork puff so this is a must have for me. I enjoyed the sweet pork filling (though it's a savory pastry) and the flaky crust. You might get a better pork puff somewhere in Chinatown and Flushing - but getting a warm pastry for less than $3 in the village? not a bad deal!
