I'm not sure how Fattals is a Syrian bakery. My impression after going around, I felt it was Palestinian rather than Syrian or Lebanese. They had Palestinian pita breads (which is new to me - especially one that had za'atar mixed in through - bought it and it was just okay). The dessert bar was impressive and I liked how things were presented. Cashiers were friendly. Atmosphere was modern - and it's a relatively big and nice store for Middle Eastern products. I would have liked to see more Lebanese things personally. If you're in New York City and looking for a plethora of Lebanese products, look closer to home. read more

On the recommendation of a Syrian Mom, we had to check this place out and she never steers us wrong. Wow, the inventory of middle eastern goods is amazing. Being from Cali, I'm not accustomed to seeing women completely clothed in their native attire. It's refreshing actually because of how much more culturally rich this area is. Parking is in a fenced lot with a security person. I'm hopeful it's not due to any increase in hate. Regardless, I'm all about supporting local businesses so we picked up a container of figs and some baklava to go. The baklava is so fresh and flakey. IT'S MY 2000th REVIEW! And I'm happy that it goes to Fattal's Syrian Bakery! I had Fattal's bookmarked for a while. It caught my eye because I had never been to a Syrian Bakery before. But it's SO much more than that. We stopped by on a Saturday at around 3:30 after visiting the Paterson Great Falls, so we decided to check this place out since we were already in the area. I am so glad that we did. It definitely was not what I was expecting. I thought it would just be a small bakery selling some sweets and freshly baked breads. But in actuality, it was like a little Middle East. I felt like I was instantly transported back to the UAE. In the front is a supermarket selling produce, meats, dried goods, frozen foods, snacks, and drinks from various Middle Eastern cultures - and the prices are very reasonable too. In the back is a mini food court where they sell entrees, gyros, freshly baked lahmacun and manakeesh, and lots of sweets. Even though we had already eaten, we couldn't resist getting a gyro. The meat was a little bit dry, I think because it was already sliced and waiting at the bottom of the pit. I'll try the chicken next time and definitely the lahmacun. If you swing a left from the food court, there's a whole operation with a machine making fresh pita, which was just mesmerizing. We ended up getting two packs (za'atar and poppy seed/onion) and it was so good. I can see why it's so busy here. They have everything. There's even a stall selling gold! This bakery had a complete makeover and became an even better market that I could imagine! Yes, this is a market that offers a wide range of things: jewelry, produce, packaged/canned items, meat and butcher shop, sweets and pastries, hot food items including one of the best shawarma meats I've had in a long time, AND fresh made pita bread!!! I would come to Paterson to shop at different stores for all my needs, but today's experience made it soooo easy for me to get all that I needed in a one stop shop. And, when I shop I get HUNGRY! Food we tried the same schwarma which came in a big portion, lakamajun which I had better elsewhere, baklava (tasted very fresh, very sweet), muhalabia ( my favorite out of everything). This place just gets better. I've been a customer for over 25 years, when it was a smaller general store, and the recent expansion to a full supermarket. You can't beat the high quality extra virgin olive oil in glass gallons for around $25 - IMO closer to Italian olive oil than the blends sold at some other more well-known markets. And then there's the bakery, fresh pita bread daily of all sizes and varieties. The best falafel I've ever had at their food counter, as well as fragrant stuffed grape leaves stuffed with ground lamb and seasoned with allspice, great daily specials. They recently also built a dining room for those wanting to eat on the premises. Lovely, warm and kind staff. Tried their cheese pies and meat pies. Didn't care for the cheese pies, the meat were good. The problem with their savory pies is they use too much dough it's too thick. We didn't like most of their baklava. I heard their shawarma wraps are good but I didn't get to try them. The grocery and meat sides are well stocked and clean. The store is clean. There's a bakery, grocery store, jewelry area, and butcher area. The prices are reasonable. They sell halal meat. Bakery sells sandwiches (shawarma and falafel), they also have hummus, babaganoush, and some other goodies including cheese and spinach pies. They have a private parking lot which is definitely helpful instead of having to find street parking. There's some construction happening currently in the parking lot...not sure if they're expanding or just fixing it. Checkout was pretty quickly...there was only one cashier but as soon as they saw we were coming they opened the second cashier (they get brownie points for this because that meant we had no wait time). I don't know of a better Middle Eastern market than Fattal's. It has one real competitor--one peer--Nouri's, just down the street. The two stores are the pillars of the South Paterson business community. They led the revitalization of the whole district, which is really booming today. Both started very small, as first-rate bakeries; both have grown, over the years, into large, first-rate full-service Middle Eastern markets. Between the two stores, you can find anything you might want in terms of Middle Eastern baked goods, foods, spices, meats, even jewelry. Fattal's got its start in 1968, Nouri's a decade later. I love both stores very much, and will review Nouri's another day. Members of my family have been supportive, enthusiastic customers of both stores from the very beginning. Today I want to focus on Fattal's--a wonderful, family-run store (now in its third-generation as a family business, I believe). Fattal's has undergone a major expansion and renovation in the past year. It's now a large store with a bright, open, airy, modern feel. Curved counters in the pastry department and the meat department contribute an appealingly flowing feel to the store. It is clean. The staff is helpful and friendly. I pop into Fattal's often. Fattal's bread is really terrific. I usually buy their basic Syrian bread, sometimes their extra-thick loaves, and from time to time try all of their different varieties (whole wheat, multi-grain, poppy-and-onion, etc.) Whatever I buy, I know it will be flavorful and fresh. Let me take you back to the beginning, because my Mom discovered Michael Fattal and his terrific bread right at the start, in 1968. My mom had the kind of personality where she would talk to everyone she met; she wanted to know their stories. (I'm more reserved.) Michael Fattal--looking weary but happy--was a one-man operation at the start, selling bread he'd just made. And if you got to his little store late in the day and he'd sold all the bread he'd made that day, you were out-of-luck. But our family just loved his bread. My Mom would say it tasted like the bread her Mother had made. And we were even more thrilled when he began baking pastries as well. No one made better baklava. And he would tell my Mom his story, how he'd arrived from Syria with no money, had taken any work he could find, just to survive (working in a shoe factory, if I remember correctly) and baking in his spare time. He told my Mom he was from Aleppo. My Mom said, "That's where my parents were from; we must be related." One time my Mom bought all of the baklava he had made, put it into a cardboard box, and mailed it to my older brother, who was away at college back then in the late 1960s. The box got damaged in the mail, and the baklava was ruined. When we tried to buy more baklava, Michael Fattal was genuinely distraught, saying: "You mailed the baklava I made? You let it get ruined in the mail? I don't have any more baklava to sell. I don't know when I'll have more. Do you have any idea how long it takes me to make that baklava?" And he told my Mom, in Arabic, just how long it took to make such good baklava. And boy! He did not leave out a step. My Mom left the shop crestfallen, telling my sister and me, "He has the soul of an artist. He works harder than you can ever imagine, getting very little sleep, to bake such fine baklava. No one works harder than that man. I think he raised the bees to make the honey he used in that baklava. I'm not sure if he'll ever sell us baklava again, since we let that big batch get ruined in the mail." But the next time we went to see him, Michael Fattal had come up with a solution. He'd somehow found a large metal cannister--the kind that movie theaters used to store motion-picture film--which he said would protect his baklava if we ever wanted to mail more to my older brother. Which we did. And we became fans of Michael Fattal and his store for life. We watched the store grow bigger and bigger over the years, without ever losing quality. I like Fattal's freshly cooked stuffed cabbage, kibbe, tabouli, as well. (I make all of those things myself, but sometimes I don't feel like cooking, and I like the way they make such things.) I've only had good experiences at Fattal's and I've been a lifelong customer. (So many years now!) The closest thing to a "bad experience" I ever had was that, for a while, there was a small stray kitten living in the parking lot, which I almost ran over. (And I sure didn't want to have a dead kitten on my conscience.) But even that story had a happy ending, One of Fattal's good workers, Mohammad Ata (aided by his sister Layaly) managed to catch the stray kitten--which isn't easy--and find a proper home for it. And that made me smile. A friend from overseas, who recently stayed for a good long visit with me, said his favorite place in all of Paterson was Fattal's Bakery. I like the store a lot! read more

Decided to get a shawarma sandwich from here and got the mixed- Beef & Chicken $4.99. You do get pretty big chunks of meats, but it lacks seasoning and tastes bland. I also got the lebneh with zattar $5.99 (or 6.99) and it was okay. My plate was drenched in the zattar oil and it took away the taste of the lebneh. Overall was pretty disappointed. read more

I recently read that Paterson, NJ was a great destination for middle eastern food. So I made the leap that there must be really good middle eastern groceries nearby - and wow, was I right! I found Fattal's, but calling it a bakery is a misnomer. You can bet baked goods (that look amazing), middle eastern groceries-spices-nuts, prepared foods, fresh butchered meat, and jewelry (!). In the back there's a great place for food and seating so you can eat on the premises. Bonus points since this shop on Main Street has its own parking lot! While it's predominately a bakery pumping out fresh breads and pastries, Fattal's happens to also be a grocery store with a variety of Middle Eastern ingredients and goodies. There is a deli/butcher, a section with an assortment of sweets, and a hot food area as well--and yes, a jewelry section in the middle of the store where you could purchase gold bangles and necklaces among other gilded pieces. Talk about convenience! I initially came here just for their fresh pita, but ended up leaving with more. The grocery area piqued my curiosity and I felt like a kid in a candy store. Among the different Middle Eastern and Mediterranean items I saw, I bought Ayran, halvah, different cheeses, fresh store-baked pita, assorted pickles, and fresh garlic paste among other items. Everything I bought was properly labeled, in good quality, and reasonably priced. If groceries won't draw you in, perhaps the smell of roasting meat and freshly baked bread will. We tried the Beef and Chicken Shawarma pita sandwiches (both are $3.99/ea), which we thought were tasty and well stuffed; the beef was the most flavorful of the two. On top of the counters are fresh pastries and pies; the latter could also be ordered fresh and in two sizes (6in. and 10in.), which are baked in their wood-fired oven. Inside the glass counters are the kebabs for the platters and sandwiches. You could order for take-out, but there are a few tables as well. Even if you're not familiar with any of the products they offer, Fattal's is one of those places that caters to both its regulars and the curious crowd. The staff here are very friendly, so don't be shy to ask questions while looking around. I waited months to check this place out, so I'm ecstatic I finally had the opportunity to do so today. Fattal's will most likely be a regular stop for me whenever I'm in Paterson--mainly because of the unique products I'd love to try on future visits, but also because they're conveniently located near great restaurants on Main St. read more

Food and selection is great. Why do I have to write 58 characters to be able to post a review?

Mostly a 4 for the prepared goods and sweets sections. Unique place with nice staff. I found some of the prices of things to be a little high outside of the baked goods/sweets section. For example, they sell a rather delicious brand of Persian Ice cream called Saffron & Rose Ice Cream from LA but it was 11 bucks for a small container so we passed. Everything was good outside of the off tasting Basturma which cost 6/7 bucks and had to be thrown out essentially. Prepared goods: The lahmajoun selection is unique. It wasn't just the typical meat version but they also had a cheese and spinach one among others. The person in front was nice. We ordered two large ones (one meat, one spinach/cheese) along with a small mini spinach pie, a spinach/cheese long bread (yes we ordered way too many spinach based things,) and a bread stuffed with olives, walnuts, and peppers. The total of all of this was around 8/9 bucks which is quite nice. The meat lahmajoun pie was excellent though it could have used a little more spice. Lemon juice helped with the flavor. The spinach/cheese one reminded me of pizza outside of the crust and was quite tasty. The mini spinach pies were quite good. The last thing bought reminded me a bit of some cross between muhammara and that olive spread people put on top of muffaletta. It was quite good. We also got some olives which were excellent and cheap. I think it was 4.99 per pound. Sweets: In terms of sweets, we bought some excellent pitted dates along with two types of ma'amoul, date and pistachio. I love pistachio treats and this version of ma'amoul/mammoul was one of the best I have tried. The date version was good though I well like pistachio treats more. Being Syrian, the stuff reminded him heavily of the stuff he used to eat. If the prepared goods/sweets section was as lackluster as the groceries, I would not be giving this a 4. But that Ma'amoul was amazing and the rest of the stuff was quite good for the cheap prices. 3.6 read more

Clean Well Stocked Very Friendly I haven't been shopping in this area in over ten years, after some great advice from a local yelper Chuck A. my son (who has Syrian blood on his mothers side) and I took a quick drive to have some authentic Syrian food at Aleppo. After a great meal we took a walk down Main Street to check things out, stopped in a few shops and came across Fattal's Syrian Bakery. I had totally forgotten about this great ethnic market, excited my son and I walked in the front doors which opened up into another world of culture & cuisine. The store has a excellent selection of products (many Halal) including a bakery, eat in cafe, butcher and a jewelry shop giving it that Bazaar atmosphere. Well organized and clean we easily navigated our way around stopping and frequently thinking "I can't believe they have this". After thirty minutes or so we walked to the check out area arms full of ethnic goodness. The check out guy was great, we chatted as he smiled and made small talk with us, refreshing. I choose Halal whenever available most notably for meat as by Islamic Law Halal requires that: "Animals are consistently treated with mercy and respect and will be blessed with the name of God (Allah) prior to slaughter". This is a practice that is in keeping with my belief that animals should live and eat like they would naturally before being slaughter by the most humane methods possible. Very happy to have rediscovered this area with it's decidedly Middle Eastern shops and restaurants. This feedback is on the deli only. I still shop there for grocery but the deli is horrible. They are to cheap to get a separate scale and area for meats and chicken. They use the same scale for deli meats to weight chicken and red meat. I went there to buy some Swiss cheese and turkey. I was shocked when I saw they are weighing a whole tray of raw chicken on the same scale that right he weighed my cheese how disgusting is that? I felt sick to my stomach. They also cutting the red meat right there next to the scale for the deli meats! That's so gross and could cause salmonella. This is the real deal middle eastern market. It's like Sahadi's in Brooklyn except bigger and with parking. My Syrian in-laws and their relatives are regulars. When my mother in law was ill this is where relatives sent food from. My kids loved to try the unique malt sodas. I love the handmade nougats offered here, and also the soujuk (sp.?) sandwiches. SUPERB sfeeha, by the way. (I like mine with lots of za'atar on top.) The store also offers a halal meat department that's a little expensive but (simply put) hard to beat. The baklawa (sorry, I use the Arabic spelling without fail) may be the best in all of northern Jersey, and may be purchased in trays should you want to give a friend or colleague a boxful. It's odd to many Americans that someone's peddling gold jewelry inside a store I associate with food, yes, but (as it turns out) this is not an uncommon practice in the Levant. (Many Asian grocery stores also offer this initially baffling option, believe it or not.) This place has a generous amount of parking space, too, and that's saying a lot in a city that's so utterly devoid of enough damned parking spaces. Basic (even plain Jane) website that's informative yet awfully blah. (No need for bells, whistles, and circus tents, I reckon.) No trip to Newark or New York is ever complete for us without a jaunt into Paterson, and no trip to Paterson is ever complete without our spending AT LEAST an hour inside Fattal's. read more
