Oh yeah, this was fun! I'm a certified diver but my husband isn't. We chose to go with Fathom Five, based the write up from a guidebook. I booked the shore dives over the phone and the person I talked with was really friendly and encouraging about my husband giving diving a try. He had done the Discover Scuba on Maui the previous week. The morning of the dive, we met Andrew at the dive site. It was just the two of us and him. He had all of our gear set up and ready to go. Then, he spent a good 30 minutes showing us a book of the things we were going to see down there. He was so knowledgeable about the marine life in the area and his enthusiasm was contagious. Underwater, he was very attentive to us, making sure that we were properly weighted, clearing our ears, etc. He took us on two dives and wrote the fish names on a slate as we saw them. That was very cool. He was by far the best dive guide I've ever dove with. Next time we go to Kauai, we'll definitely dive with them. read more

I'm an experienced diver and my girlfriend is a newly-certified diver. Based on recommendation from one of her instructors, we booked a two-tank afternoon trip with Fathom Five. From the first phone call, I was pleased. When I called to make the reservation, I did not feel rushed as I went through my questions. A couple of days before the dive, I got a phone call from Fathom Five, reminding me of the trip. I called back with more questions and was treated very well. Checking in at the shop was also a great experience. The experience just got better when we got to the boat. We had Mike as captain and Mike as divemaster. DM Mike was excellent as he helped set up everyone's gear (I was the only diver who brought my own). Both Captain and DM loaded all the gear onto the boat. He did a great job with the pre-dive briefing. We went to Harbor Ledges then Sheraton Caverns. We saw turtles, shark, blowfish, octopus and lots of colorful reef fish. We dove as a group and DM Mike was a great leader and very communicative underwater as well as on the boat. The boat was small and perfectly sized for the six divers. Captain Mike put the weights in everyone's BCs as DM Mike called out the weight recommendations. As we surfaced after each dive, Captain Mike took the BC and tank from each diver. We then were able to climb up the stern unladen. Very easy that way! Without even thinking about it, Captain Mike switched over the gear to the second tank (even mine -- and I had brought my own gear!). After the second dive, Captain Mike pulled weights from everyone's gear. After getting back to the dock, both Captain and DM unloaded all the gear from the boat. My personal gear got a fresh-water rinse along with all their rental gear - a most welcome addition. This was a wonderful trip with an experienced team. The sites chosen were excellent (they asked all of us about where we had been in Kauai and what we wanted to see). Everyone on the boat seemed pleased with the outcome. Went to Kauai for a long weekend with a friend visiting from Europe. Boat captain Brian and dive guide Anthony did a great job taking care of us out on the water. Went diving with these guys in May. Greg is a superb dive leader; he delivered on both dives with sharks, turtles, nudibranchs and tons of fish. Our group of three divers had the boat to ourselves. The dives were calm and relaxed and untimed: perfecto! Dive with this operator and avoid the crowds. read more

These folks are great! Even after Hurricane Ana had churned up the water, we had some good dives with spotted eagle ray, turtles, tons of fish and cool reef sharks. And the staff is always helpful and friendly, especially Nick and Cap'n Charlie. Great for beginner divers or tired old divers like me. read more

This was simply the most perfect dive experience for someone getting their open water certification. Fathom Five is a first-rate operation with the heart of a family-owned business. I was a little nervous to get my dive certification. My husband is an experienced diver and as soon as he saw Jeanette, he said you are in good hands. And I was. She is part mom, part seasoned diver who still is amazed by the ocean every day. The equipment was much better than I had experienced from other dive shops as well. I was surrounded by a ton of ocean wildlife on every dive and it seemed like all of the skills just came naturally. She gave us a lot of instruction on the surface, her signals were very clear and that made for great dives that seemed timeless and easy. Excellent dive experience with dive master Jessie! My husband and my brother were both certified; my dad and I were not. Jessie was able to make sure we all had an incredible time, felt very safe the whole time, and saw tons of sea life. I'd done one Discover Dive before and this was 180 degrees different. Jessie pointed out lionfish, Moray eels, frog fish, and many more sea creatures I never would have seen (although I spotted the octopus!). I'd highly recommend this outfit. read more

Excellent customer service! We had 2 boat dives planned and the capt. was sick on the first day but Fathom took us to an awesome shore dive and compt us our equipment for the day. Jessie was our dive master for both days. She is very knowledgeable about everything you will see under water and even brings a writing board to write down the names of all the marine life. She is amazing at finding lots of different eels and frog fish and everything in between, a real eye for finding anything. Capt. Charlie was awesome as well! Great sense of humor which made the boat ride that much more fun. I will certainly return to Fathom Five divers upon my return to Kauai. read more

I had never really considered scuba but had done a little snorkeling. Staying at Lawai Beach Resort I took advantage of a free pool intro to scuba with Carlos. He was such a great instructor that I decided to try the Discover Scuba Diving the next day. Carlos made everything so simple that I was totally comfortable in the ocean in no time. My first dive with Carlos and two other students lasted 47 minutes and we saw countless fish of all varieties. After a short break for water, snacks and fresh tanks we dove again for 55 minutes. This time we descended to 40 feet and the highlight was seeing a large male turtle. This was a wonderful introduction to scuba for this 61 year old man. I recommend Fathom Five and Carlos to anyone with any slight interest in diving. read more

I did 2 two-tank dives with Fathom Five while on the island. This place is fantastic. These guys are all about making sure that everybody who dives with them has a great diving experience. I can't imagine working for a company that is constantly dealing with tourists and divers of unknown experience levels, but these guys make it seem like they absolutely love to do it. All of the staff that I dealt with (6 people) were fun, friendly, and extremely safe. The dive masters know these dive areas extremely well, so they are good at finding and pointing out some really interesting (and sometimes rare) marine life. They have good equipment and they buy new equipment regularly. And they place value on respecting natural and local resources. I won't dive with anybody else. read more

Great dive shop! Loni, the manager, took great care of us. We rented scuba gear for a week and also had three guided dives at Ni'ihau, with Jesse. She showed us many species of sea life that are only seen there, and we got to dive in some of the bluest water on the planet. Fathom Five is the ONLY dive shop on Kauai that will rent you scuba gear without requiring you to dive with them. We did 3 dives, on our own, off of a charter sailboat and also had them provide a guide for our 3 dives off of Ni'ihau. Our money was well spent, both for the great scuba gear as well as the knowledgeable dive guides on staff. read more

Excellent dive today with Carlos! My husband and son have been on 3 and 2 previous dives each - today's dive topped as their best and it was due to Carlos' guidance. It was also the first time for my son's girlfriend. Carlos catered to all levels - he was incredibly patient, thorough with his instruction and went above & beyond to point out many specifics in the water, including the elusive frog fish (other instructors were envious of what our group saw!). I have approximately 50 dives including dives with some larger dive companies in Maui, HI. I loved my experience with Fathom Five. The staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. If you are looking at a flashy dive company with a large boat and a ton of divers, this is not for you. Fathom Five does not seem to believe in the "cattle boat" mentality of some other dive outfits. I dove "The Icebox" and "Sheraton Caves" with Fathom Five as a two tank dive in October 2010. We were 5 divers on the boat. Our dive instructor was very knowledgeable. He asked us what we would like to see on our dives in order to decide where to dive that particular morning. Seas were rough the entire week we stayed in Kauai, but I did not think that the boat ride was exceptionally "bumpy." - It is an Ocean after all, not a lake! My dives were very relaxed and enjoyable. We did see Green Sea Turtles as requested and much more. I loved the Sheraton Caves for their swim-throughs. I recommend Fathom Five for their friendly staff, great rental equipment, relaxed attitude, and the fact that they do not cater to mass dive productions. I will definitely be back for more next time I am on Kauai. Thanks, guys!! read more

They took all the effort to look for eels and we were able to see the world's smallest eel- Dwarf eel.and the best part at the end they washed our diving equipment!!! Just got back from completing 8 dives with Fathom Five. The staff was extremely helpful, the dive masters incredible, and Charlie the Capt. was professional, fun and safe. Highly recommend Brian as a dive master. Charles is equally as good. Highlight of the trip was a two tank drift on Turtle Bluffs watching monk seals, yes plural, frolic, pose, and mate. Wow...dive with Mike "the octopus whisperer"and his Padi dive mate Tyler and you will have the dive of a lifetime. 2 tank boat dive today (and shore dive last week with Mike)...it's been 10yrs for us since our last boat dive. Experienced seeing and very gently touching an octopus, watching sea turtle which continued to circle our group; coming up directly beneath Mike one time, White Tip shark hidden in the caves, amazing sea life, under h2o veteran memorial (nice tribute to see for those of us who served) and a 1st class Padi care for all of us onboard and in the H20. The skipper Charlie, has 30yrs + of experience it was evident since he took us to just the right spots. I recently got two out of four open water dives for certification under my belt. I was a bit nervous at first, particularly with respect to clearing my mask under water. However, luckily I was assigned to Blake, my dive instructor, who could not have been more patient, gently instructional, chill, and cool the entire time. With his help, I was easily able to pass the skills portions of the test, which allowed us time to explore the wonders of the sea. In just an hour or so, we were able to see a myriad of sea life, including a ray, three turtles, various fish, eels, and an octopus! We had an excellent time with Fathom Five Divers in Kauai. They were friendly, informative and made the experience of getting certified easy. Nick was BRILLIANT! Helpful, fun, calm and patient. My girlfriend and I were just in Poipu, Kauai in November. We had booked our original dive ~2 weeks in advance with a shop other than Fathom Five (I won't mention their name, but they have a yellow sub logo). At just after 5:00PM the evening before our scheduled 10:00AM dive time, Other Shop called us and canceled because they needed two more people to go on the dive which they didn't get. With all of the dive shops closing at 5:00PM and the next day being the only one that we had available to dive due to our departing flight, we started frantically searching for another shop in the area. We got a hold of Fathom Five just before 5:15PM, which according to the guy who answered the phone, "I'm glad you got through, one more minute and our phones would have automatically cut over to voicemail." He was very sympathetic to what had happened, and let us know that they were booked for the next day, but that he wanted to make a phone call and would call us right back. He called back a couple minutes later, and one of their divemasters, Lacey, said she would come in on her day off to take us out for two dives. We were ecstatic! Lacey was great and the dives were very nice. Visibility was good, and we saw some pretty nice marine life including a devil scorpionfish and a bale of six sea turtles. Without Fathom Five and Lacey, we would not have gotten to do any diving on our Hawaii vacation. They quite literally saved our dives from never happening. TL;DR -- Get a hold of Lacey at Fathom Five in Poipu for your Kauai diving. read more

We went on two awesome dives with Fathoms Five Diving. One shore dive and one night dive. Jessi and Nick were both awesome dive masters with extensive dive knowledge. On our shore dive, Jessi identified different types of fish and mammals by writing on a tablet. It was great to know exactly what we were looking at. I would highly recommend Fathom Five diving. I had a great experience with these folks. I did a two-tank morning dive. Equipment (boat, regulator, BCD, computer) was like new and was in good working order. The dive master KC was very knowledgeable about local sea life. The captain Charlie was very professional and friendly. Sadly he's a Cubs fan but no one is perfect. 6 people tops per boat. My sweetheart chose Fathom Five for (2) 3 tank dives at the beginning of Oct. and thinks they're great! We did the two tank introductory dive with Jermey and had a blast! He was very thorough at teaching us about the gear and proper scuba safety procedures. Although I haven't been to Kauai in about 6 years, I went six times between 1998 and 2008 and dove with FF every time. Each time, they've been terrific, especially for a guy who is only an occasional diver. Always accomodate requests for a big tank for an airhog like me, great service on and off the boat. I don't have too many specifics after six years, but I think these guys were just top notch. read more

My husband and I dived for the first time last weekend during our Kama Ania (we are from Honolulu) honeymoon. I would give this place 5 starts except the manger was very rude. We had a lot of questions being that we had never scuba dived and we are not familiar with the area. He snapped at us several times and had a mean glare. He did not treat his employees with respect either. It seemed as though the gal that was helping us at the front desk was in training and he snapped at her in front of us too. We almost considered walking out because his manor made us nervous. We were relived to find out he was not our instructor. Our instructor was very kind and knowledgeable. I don't know how she puts up with such a grumpy manger. We did a two tank intro dive. It was lots of fun. It was just the two of us and the instructor. In between dives we snacked on unhealthy potato chips. We had to choose from doritos, ruffles, or chetoos, none of which I care to eat. We were so hungry we munched on what was there. It would have been great to have some pineapple slices or some kind of local fruit, and some energy bars or something healthier than potato chips and soda. So, one less star for the unhealthy food as well. Over all it was a fun dive. read more
