My boyfriend and I are fairly new divers, and are so happy we found this dive tour. We had Sean (or Shawn?) as our dive master and Janice as our captain,they were both so lovely and made the experience that much greater. The dive sites are a short 5-10 minute boat ride away which was great if you get a little sea sick, so you're at the dive sites right away. We did the 2 took boat tour and saw amazing marine life, especially turtles, at each site. They provide refreshments and snacks on the boat, so you don't have to worry about bringing your own. Great dive shop on Kauai. All new equipment, experienced team and one of the best dive experiences we've had in Hawaii. Their crew ran like clockwork, the boat had only 6 divers and all at the same level (some of the larger boat's we've been on mix levels and include snorkelers which slows the overall process down). Our dive master Tony was great. He gave us all a simple overview while on the boat of the sea life we'd be seeing and he brought a tablet under with us so he could write out the names of key fish on the reef and used his flashlight to make them easy to see. He gave some great suggestions while allowing our group of experienced divers an opportunity to explore the sites on our own if we wanted. The dive sites were amazing with lots of fish, turtles, eels, sharks and caves to swim through (if you wanted). If diving Kauai, dive with Fathom Five Divers. read more

On Nov 16, 2020 my daughter (10yr) and I had a wonderful morning diving at Koloa Landing with the fabulous Dive Instructor Michelle. We did 2 dives, each about an hour long. On these dives we saw ~15 Turtles, coral, schools of fish, eels, flounder, and other things I didn't recognize. My daughter had never been diving, so she did the full "dive with an instructor" package while I did the "Certified Tag Along". Michelle met us at the dive site, got all the gear setup, and worked with us at every step. The equipment provided was first rate, including the wet suits, fins, masks, BCD, and booties. They even had prescription dive masks, and were able to provide one for me to use. Before getting in the water Dive Instructor Michelle walked my daughter through what we were going to do, and once in the water went through the first 4 open-water skills (regulator clearing, etc). The initial decent to ~35 feet was done slowly and carefully, at which point we all swam around while Michelle pointed out Turtles, fish, eels, and other interesting things. Between dives, I let Michelle know my boots were too small and the owner of Fathom 5 drove down from the shop with a larger pair. That was a great experience. We did our first ocean dive with Jeanette (certified in Utah). There were three of us. Two new divers and one rusty one. She took it all in stride and helped to alleviate our fears and concerns and took us to the Koloa Landing for a two tank dive. My brother had warned me about shore dives but it really was easy to get in the water. We did it the first week in January 2023. She was very patient and kind. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. And yes, you want your wetsuit snug and tight!! read more

We found Fathom Five by a recommendation from another tour. We were a family of four and loved the small group aspect, we actually ended up being only ones on the boat. Katie and Sergio were amazing! Katie showed us so much under the water and when our 15 year old couldn't equalize Sergio chatted with him and he still had a great time above water on the boat. We highly recommend them them! Fathom Five made Kauai a great vacation. We did 3 scuba adventures with them and had a great time. Julie and Janice were THE BEST!!! We had 2 of 3 dives with these 2 amazing women and they truly exceeded our expectations. From their great sense of humor to keeping us safe and their dive knowledge made the 2 of them perfect. I can't believe I haven't done this review, because in my head I have done it many times lol! After having a 35+ year bucket list item of wanting to scuba, my husband and I booked an Intro to Scuba class with the highest rated establishment on the island when we visited end of last May. Our instructor was Jose, and we cannot say enough good about his knowledge and teaching style. He was professional but comfortable, thorough but not overwhelming in his teaching, and made sure we were retaining the necessary information and were absolutely confident on the skills even before getting into the water. When he took our group of 4 students into the water at Koloa Landing, he had that same confident presence and was very patient - especially with me! I was losing hope of ever going under since I could not equalize one of my ears but on my next try I was able to do so. At one point I started drifting up out of control (from adding too much air to my BCD) and he made sure to swiftly but safely get me back down to the right level and I learned the proper way to have neutral buoyancy. I enjoyed that dive but our 2nd dive was even better as I had more confidence. We had such an amazing experience that we booked another 2 tank dive immediately for the following week at Tunnels. Panda was our instructor there and she was good as well. At that point the island was experiencing unusually large tides & currents for that time of year, and although it was safe (FF keeps an eye on conditions and would have cancelled/re-scheduled if it was in any way questionable) visibility was poor so we were more anxious on this dive despite having past experience. With all that said, we decided to use some of our Intro credit with Fathom Five to come back and complete our certification this coming May. We have requested Jose as our instructor as he was excellent in teaching us in a way we could learn most effectively. Shout out to Jeanette as well the "shuttle driver" who was so personable and great to talk to, but then I realized was the owner of Fathom Five lol! We'd love any class taught by her as well! My boyfriend and I were nervous since it has been a while since our last dive, but Anthony, our dive master made me feel super comfortable during our dive and told us to take our time and not rush our descent (something I have a problem with especially with equalizing). Went on a morning 2 tank dive on April 16, 2021. Gear and boat well maintained. Michelle and boat driver went over use of gear, procedures, and safety. They were well prepared and advised us where to sit and how to move around the boat when underway. Dives were great! There was a lot of sea life. They explained that Kauai supplies a lot of algae to the ocean via its fresh water rivers. Though this makes the coral less brilliant, it provides for for a lot of sea life including, fish, eels, turtles and sea cucumbers. Climbing out of the water onto the boat was easy. Riley took us diving. Neither of us are certified so this was another introduction course. I really love diving and feel very safe with our guide. We saw lots of fish, sea turtles and a seal too. We should probably just get certified. My only complaint, and it's not Riley's fault is that none of us, including Riley, were allowed to take pictures on the dive. We can't even wear a GoPro. Kinda sucks for the money spent. But again, I could take pictures if I was certified. read more

Just had a fantastic experience, start-to-finish with Fathom 5 divers. The booking process was efficient and informative, right over the phone. All disclosures, requirements, and options for our 4-person (family) Niihau dive were provided, and I am glad we were encouraged to take the nitrox class because this allowed for longer dives in an extraordinary place (see below). We had a problem with our dive party: our daughter got sick and had to cancel at the last minute. We found her replacement after the dive shop closed, and emailed and left a message at Fathom 5. Loni texted me AFTER HOURS to get the info on our replacement diver (our son's good friend). Everything was ready in the morning for our full party, thanks Loni! The most important part, of course, is the dive trip itself. Captain Jordan and Divemaster Anthony were an amazing team. Jordan took us across the deep water channel like a champ, and Anthony's emphasis on safety put us all at ease so we could focus on enjoying our dives. The equipment provided was highest-quality, new, and in excellent working order. ScubaPro, need I say more? Now for the very-most-important part: Diving with Anthony was like participating in a master class on exploring underwater ecosystems. His attention to the wildlife dynamics during the dive resulted in us having truly extraordinary encounters with wildlife making this, by far, the best dive we have ever done off Kauai. A less attentive divemaster would have missed the cues that led us into amazing experiences with dolphins, sharks, seals and numerous other creatures. As it was, Anthony gave my family a gift we will cherish for a lifetime! The ride back from Niihau was bumpy, luckily the management at Fathom 5 has empowered their expert crew to provide for the comfort of their divers! The special BB seating made the rough trek as comfortable as possible. Jordan kept us moving in some big swells, and we never felt unsafe because of his skilled driving. This was my third dive with Fathom 5, they are now 3/3 great dives in my book, and most highly recommended. Just went on a dive today at the Sheraton caves with dive master Jordan and Capt Beau. I only have been with 6 divemasters for my 17 but I think Jordan is probably the best so far. They both gave great pre-dive and safety information, fish identification (wrote on the etch a sketch multiple times and had a lot of education during the surface interval), gave us responsibility for our air (allowed divers to continue if they still had air while the others peeled off for their safety stop), and had a great pace. This company and especially Jordan really is impressive (also compared to another dive company we dove with on Kauai). Would definitely recommend and my wife and I will definitely dive with this company and Jordan the next time we're here is he's still around! read more

I've dived twice with Fathom Five, twice with the competition down the road, and twice with the place back home where I got certified. I'm still a newbie, but I think that's enough to rate them, particularly since a lot of people diving here are likely to be newbies too. One great point about this company is the founding owner, Jeannette. She's fantastic. More about her later. My first dive with Fathom Five was good. I did a two-tank afternoon shore dive at Koloa Landing, which is the most popular shore dive on Kauai - because it's a great spot. No one else signed up for it, so it was just me and the guide. He went over hand signals for various standard matters, plus several signs for notable sea life. He used a tablet for less common sea life. On the first dive, we went out along the east side of the inlet on the first dive, and the west side on the second. Sea turtles are one of the premier attractions here, and I saw several, but fewer than on some other dives. There were lots of other interesting creatures, notably a frogfish, which the guide said he hadn't seen there for a couple of months. The east dive seemed to have more of everything that day, so the west dive was a bit anticlimactic. Conditions vary, so that was the luck of the day. The guide, Chad, did a good job. After a boat dive with the competition, and some days off due to "gnarly waves" that kept boats in port and made shore entry and exit hazardous, I returned to Fathom Five for my last dive before leaving the island. I wanted to try either a boat dive with Fathom Five or a night dive. Their boats were booked up, so I got a night dive. And it was great. Normal policy here is a two diver minimum for night shore dives, and more for night boat dives. But the owner Jeannette, loves night diving, and had the evening free, so she took me out herself. (That way she didn't have to pay an employee for just one customer.) It was a two-tank dive, again at Koloa Landing. The first dive was actually a twilight dive, not night. Jeannette took a different dive path, going out on the east side, across the sandy middle, and back along the west (or maybe vice-versa). That was good because I got to see both sides during twilight, then both sides at night. It also allowed us to spend more time on one side or the other if one was more interesting at the moment. The twilight dive was similar to the shore dive a week earlier, except that light was dimmer and most sea life was more abundant. There were _lots_ of turtles. There was enough light that Jeannette was, at my request, able to take a decent underwater picture of me on my camera. (I took lots of video too, but I haven't has a chance to look it over yet, other than to see that there was enough light.) She obviously knew the underwater terrain very well. The 200-year-old coral mass, the shape of a mushroom and size of a small car, was more impressive because she could tell a little about it. Two turtles followed us back all the way to the shore. During the surface interval, we saw lots of people lined up on a wall west of the inlet, watching the beautiful sunset. (It had looked pretty great from the water too, on the swim back to the shore after the twilight dive.) We switched tanks and prepared gear with the remaining light so we wouldn't have to fumble around after dark. Then we had snacks, and she briefed me on the dive light, and described some things that were more likely to show up at night. There was time for small-talk too, while waiting for full darkness. The night dive was amazing. I didn't bother to bring my camera; it would have been a distraction from just seeing things, and I had doubts about getting the lighting right. The turtles were still abundant. We saw a shark. We saw lots of eels, including the cool-looking dragon moray. We saw a rare, vibrant red gumdrop nudibranch. We saw lots of other good stuff. While packing up, Jeannette said that she likes night dives at least as much as day diving - except that it's chilly. It was not as warm as a day dive, of course, but I did my certification dives in 47°F water and 50°F air, so the Kauai night air felt nice to me. But bring a jacket if you do a night dive. In conclusion, I've found all three dive companies similarly good - except that Jeannette is an outstanding dive guide. If you can dive with her, go for it. Otherwise, I'd say that it's reasonable to choose between Fathom Five and Seasport on the basis of schedule, unless you discover another great dive guide like Jeannette. read more

We stayed on the south side of the island, which made Fathom Five and the dock only a couple mins drive from the hotel. I dove 2 Tank Morning dives on Monday Jan 16 and Wednesday Jan 18, 2017 for a total of 4 dives. I missed my wife/buddy, but someone had to work. The shop was nice, clean, and looked like it had anything you would need if you forgot something. The staff was fun and friendly with smiles on there faces. They would accommodate any needs or requests I heard. The diving was a bit different than I have experienced, most of my diving has been in the Caribbean. There was a lot of lava rock and the divemasters pointed out all kinds of endemic (only found) fish to Hawaii. I saw lots of new fish (to me), including a leaf scorpion fish...awesome! From the communications before I got on the boat, the professionalism of the shop when getting my wetsuit and fins, the teamwork and organization of Captain Mercedes and DM Reid were all top notch! I would recommend this dive shop and wish I had more time to do many, many more dives with Jeanette. My 15 yr old has been certified for 3 years, but is still getting into the sport and has only dove Monterrey Bay (cold, 7 mil wetsuit) and she was great with him. The check in process was a train wreck. My group of 3 scheduled a evening and night dive with Fathom Five in July 2024. We arrived at their office to check in on time. They only had one employee working their office / retail store to answer the phones, check guests in, get guests their wetsuits and rental equipment and handle retail sales. It was so chaotic I asked the employee "are you always this understaffed?" To my surprise his answer was "yes". When he had to go get a pair of fins, he actually had to lock the shop and leave for about 5 minutes. Phones were ringing off the hook, all guests had to leave the store so he could lock the door and go to wherever they kept the rental equipment. Once we were checked in the process was better. We drove to the boat dock and met the crew where we had a decent dive. Having used other dive outfitters in Kauai, I would suggest you find one that is adequately staffed. I will not use Fathom Five in the future. read more
