Absolutely fantastic team working at this restaurant! We were a group of 25+ people who came in without warning on a Friday night. I'm assuming the owner (it was a nice older gentleman) started working immediately to get us seated, and it was not an easy feat. We were seated in less than 15 minutes and they were busy! Our waitress, Carol, was PHENOMENAL! She was beyond accommodating for such a large group, kept our orders straight, and kept a smile the whole time. The food was also top notch! Only 8 or 9 tables occupied. Here's why. For starters, it's too bright in there. Temperature is a slight bit chilly. Booths have no cushions. Outdoor seating is charming but not offered at the door. On a social scale it's a 3 Here's what I would do if it were mine. Lower the lights a bit. Add some high tops to the bar area to make bar more inviting. Turn the air down just a little. Have the hostess recommend the choice of indoor or outdoor seating. (Outdoor seating already is social and pretty) And of course add some cushions to those booths. Traveling back down to Florida and was pleasantly surprised that Fat Jacks is still here! We ate here 3 years ago and loved it so we searched it out on this trip for lunch Whole rack of ribs, corn bread, slaw, sweet potato fries so good! Dessert of brownie with ice cream . Hoping this will let me post a picture. We had a carryout order and only had minimal contact with staff, but the two young ladies were courteous and fast. No problem there. The little we saw of the interior was clean, modern, and inviting. The problem was the food. Absolutely the worst steak ever served to any one. It was so rare that I believe it's illegal. Frozen veggies at a 4 star price. Maybe it was just one of those things. I know stuff happens and we took it to go so we couldn't allow them to correct it. Oh, and either no seasoning on the ribeye or just a ribeye beyond help. Over $30 mind you. Perhaps it was just a one off, bad timing thing. On the way to Florida from DC, we took I-95 exit 57 in SC for a dilnner break. Fast food places did not have seating. And by coincidence, we saw the sign for Fat Jack's.. yelp reviews said nice things about the place. Very nice outdoor seating, and the delicious seafood dinners made us mark our maps for this spot on I-95, for future trips. Grilled Atlantic salmon dishes were terrific. Bakesd sweet potato, vegetables, salads and aide dishes... all were very good. Overall *** 2.83 Stars on my weighted grading scale. To be fair Walterboro is not a dining destination and more of a driving I95 reprieve, There are very few options and I thought I was going to a "local" establishment so there was a huge letdown factor for me. Bottom line, if Walterboro is where you end up pulling off at you can do a lot worse than Fat Jack's but don't expect to find anything but a very chain like restaurant with below average food. The location, across from the Walmart, with its constant traffic was annoying but admittedly entertaining. Setting *** Full disclosure I never stepped inside so my opinion is on the outside only. With that said Fat Jack's was absolutely nothing like what I expected. I always look for locally owned places and thought that is what this was but pulling in it resembled every other chain restaurant I have ever seen. The large covered patio was fantastic as long as you don't care about the food stains and debris all over the concrete floor. Now that may be overly nick picking next to the constant barrage of traffic. It turns out that in the Walmart parking lot across the way it is a high school hangout scene. On our Friday night we were subjected to constant rumble of kids revving their engines as they drove by. I can only imagine the last time the Salt & Pepper shakers were cleaned was long before time existed. Service **** Our server was extremely friendly and offered up her opinion with ease which was sort of a double edged sword as she didn't have a very high opinion of many items we asked about. As a side note, we were a party of 6 and they automatically added 18% to the bill. Food ** The online menu didn't work for us and the pictures on Yelp don't accurately reflect the current menu which is a bit smaller. Generally speaking the food was a huge letdown for us. My sons burger, ordered medium rare, was beyond well done, my Buffalo Wings, yes I ordered them hot, were brutal in the sense they were all heat and nothing else. I tried the "Maryland" Style Crab Cake that my MIL ordered which weren't awful as long as you aren't expecting lump crab meat but definitely not something I would ever return for. My salad was basically lettuce covered with more cheese than any one human should consume in a week...and I love cheese... My husband ordered a grilled chicken sandwich. Grilled within an inch of its life...dry, tough and bland. Blech! When your very hungry husband eats three bites and declares dinner done, you know it's a bad meal. He asked for crispy fries and they were barely done let alone crispy. Our waitress must have a second job elsewhere, as she was nowhere to be found our entire time there other than getting our order and bringing the bill. She also knew nothing about the menu beyond what was written on it. I am literate and can read, if I am asking a question about something on the menu, please don't lean over me and point to the item on the menu and then shrug and say you don't know when it's pointed out that the answer isn't there. For what it is worth, I wanted to know if the Atlantic salmon was farmed or wild and it turns out it is farmed. NO THANK YOU! I was in town for training, and I ate here every day mainly for convenience. Day 1, I ordered a turkey burger and received a turkey club which was disappointing...it was just turkey lettuce and tomato.. nothing special. Day 2, I ordered the turkey burger and GOT the turkey burger and it was delicious. Day 3, I had the hamburger steak with mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese. The mashed potatoes were AMAZING. The hamburger steak was decent, it was juicy but kind of small and a little bland but it was bad? ....the macaroni was a little dry. Best I can say is the wait staff are incredibly friendly and personable. Food is ok, our lunch was cold and the mac and cheese was not good. Lunch specials are reasonably priced and the corn bread was delicious, hubby liked his fish. Chicken special needed time under the broiler to heat up the sauce and melt the cheese. Mashed potatoes were puréed a bit too soft and the gravy (served on the side in a little cup) was cold and congealed. Fried pickle chips were delicious as was fried okra. Cabbage side was also cold. Needed a pet friendly place to stop for lunch. This place has a big outdoor seating area under a roof cover- which was perfect for a rainy day. My husband ordered wings- they were delicious! My daughter and I shared the fried flounder- it came with 2 large pieces, coleslaw and 1 side of your choice. The fish was perfectly cooked and seasoned, coleslaw was good(even though I would prefer it with a little less dressing), green beans were just okay. I ordered a side of fried okra- again perfect. The Philly was loaded with good flavor of steak, onion cheese and mushrooms my fiancé said it is probably one of the most flavorful phillys he has had, and the burger was cooked to perfection with bacon, cheese, crispy onion chips tomato and raw onions. The atmosphere isn't the greatest but it's kept clean and has a cute coy pond at the entrance. The young girl who brought me the food was very pleasant but the older women standing behind the podium... well let's just assume she is the one who answered the phone. Finale review. I am so glad we found this place on yelp. Heading to Hilton head with family and stopped in for a late lunch. The place was 50% full and we did not wait to be seated. The staff were very friendly and our waitress, Dede, was very sweet and knowledgeable. My wife's pork ribeye was seasoned perfectly. My ribeye was the best steak I have ever had in my life away from my grill. My daughters lightly battered fried shrimp was also phenomenal. The collar greens were excellent! If I could do a negative 65 stars I would! Seriously run away food was tasteless no seasoning and then the Mac and cheese was dry and stale. Country fried steak was a soggy salisbury steak incognito. Then the manger said they ran out of chicken because it was after 2 and didn't even try to help the situation. But to be real it was so bad that we didn't want anything els at all. Waffle House is ocean prime compared to this joint. But I will say one thing the mimosa were good and made that experience tolerable. VERY DISAPPOINTED. I seen the reviews and I guess I had high expectations. I ordered the Philly with no mushrooms or peppers. What got me was the lack of meat I was given. As you can see, I just pushed it to half of the bun because there is no use of eating all that bread with no meat. It wasn't bad, but it also wasn't great. The portion size was just ridiculous.
