HOLY COW. What a fantastic experience I had at my visit to Fat Dan's. The atmosphere is VERY cool. Open rafter ceiling, nice and airy on the inside. The service was outstanding, and since I'd never been there before, our server was patient and helpful in explaining the menu. The Chicago Dog caught my eye, and it was simply outstanding. I'm no expert, so I can't say how authentic it was....but it was oh, so tasty, authentic or not. I'll certainly get it again. My friend, Dick, ordered some kind of giant burger, and it appeared to be fantastic. It certainly disappeared quickly, so it must've been good! Kudos to the waitress for making a suggestion...we each ordered a small order of fries, and she said "Why don't I just bring you one large order to share...there'll be more than enough, and it's cheaper". She was right...there were MORE than enough fries for both of us. The price was right, the service was outstanding, and the food was awesome. We'll be back. And VERY soon. read more

Fat Dan's recently re-opened near my house, which is a wonderful thing!!! Since I am new to Indy I had only heard legend of Fat Dan's food....it wasn't until last week that I tried it. And tried it again. And tried it again. OK So I have been there three times. JUDGE ME. Including what I have ordered and what my husband has ordered and my friends who have generously allowed (read: had no choice!) me to steal some bites of their food, here is what I have tried and LOVED: The Wells St Fat burger.....OMG! I want another one right now. I can't even talk about it or I will salivate all over my laptop. Just go order it. This was the first thing I had and I was feeling kind so I shared it. Every time someone else took a bite, I cried a little because I wanted more. (Is that selfish?) The hand made corn dog....I think it's called the "ugly" corn dog or something. Whatever it is, its juicy and amazing. Probably good for kids, but definitely adult-sized. The Italian beef.....piled very very high and delicious. I only had one bite since *someone* who won't be named but that I am married to ate the whole thing on his own. The Reuben....I have never had a Reuben with smoked corn beef before, but let me tell you it is to die for. The Pulled Pork.....this one was mine. All mine. And I ate it all. Smothered in BBQ sauce and simply amazing. I will get it again. I had some of the brisket as well. It was -- like everything else -- amazing. I might have to avoid it if I want to keep my current pants size. Or I could start a new holiday where I fast for 2 days and then celebrate the end of my fast by going to Fat Dan's for the brisket. A sort of brisket lent for something. The "best fries in the universe" really are the very best fries in the universe. They come out on butcher paper in a huge pile of all shapes and sizes (round, thin, fat, crispy, soft, salty, etc). As my friend said, "There's something for everyone in this pile!" Yum! I can't believe it has taken me this long to write a review for Fat Dan's. I am probably too busy actually GOING to Fat Dan's every other day to sit down and write one! First of all, as a native Chicagoan, this place does it right. However, it is actually the classically un-Chicago food that I think makes this place what it is. I have never been disappointed with the food at FD's. The wings are AMAZING. Why would anyone EVER go to a place like BWW to get average wings, when they could come to Fat Dan's and get the most incredible smoked chicken wings of all time? They are so tender, flavorful and smokey. There is literally nothing wrong with them. In fact... everything that comes out of the smoker is primo. The pulled pork, the brisket sandwich... they are all great. I won't take all of your time detailing my opinions on the whole menu because the review will be the same throughout; the food rocks. The beer is also spot on. They have an awesome selection of craft beer, and I always wonder why so many people go to 20 Tap next door when Fat Dan's always has a better IPA. The staff is fun and so nice. Dan is always there helping out, and this place just has an awesome vibe. (I feel as though I need to add some new adjectives to my vocabulary because I have said awesome a few too many times here.) The place is so relaxed. There is no dinnerware; everything is served on paper. It creates the feeling that anyone can go there at any time. On any given day you might see professionals, families, hippies, etc. Fat Dan's draws the WHOLE crowd. Wednesdays always bring live music in the evenings. Blech. Perchance I'm not Fat Dan's target demographic.. I don't know, but man oh man, this place pretty much grossed me out. I know it's part of the appeal to feel like you're drowning yourself in grease and eating your entire body weight in whatever hot mess of a food that you ordered and I have no problem with that when the food is worth ingesting my max caloric intake. Fat Dan's just wasn't worth it. I split Veggie burger and the pulled pork sandwich with a friend, and had tater tots and a giant pickle. The giant pickle was good! The others though... not so much. I know this might not be their fault, but their air conditioning was broken so it was about 2000 degrees inside the restaurant and my dining partners and I were swarmed by gnats throughout the whole dinner. I felt like it was a straight up Biblical swarm of locusts all over my grease-soaked parchment paper. Needless to say, all of the combining factors: grease, heat, gnats, sub-par tasting food didn't make me a Fat Dan fan. I suppose that I could've just had a bad experience...based on the other reviews I'm guessing I did. I don't know though... don't think I'll be able to return. For living right down the street from Fat Dan's, and never going...shame on me! I went for the italian sandwich - hot, and let me tell you...best sandwich I've had in a LONG time. Like...I thought about it for days, no joke. At first I was caught off guard by the whole no plates, no silverware, but it was refreshing to just do you without having to be all polite and stuff. I went on a Wednesday night and there was live music inside, but the patio game was strong and so I went for sitting outside. These past few months have been an epic chicken journey for me. The best fried chicken I've ever had made its way from Cinci to Mass Ave. The best (and spiciest) hot chicken I've ever had came from a magical Fountain Square establishment with the same name as a pretty cool car. And now the best chicken wings I've ever tasted, I've found out, are just down the street at Fat Dan's. If you hadn't noticed in my other reviews, I appreciate texture more than flavor. These things were unimaginable. Crispy little pieces of char were present in sufficient quantity to add to the smoky flavor without a hint of carbon flavor. Under that was the most uniformly cooked layer of slightly less crispy...not a touch of soggy...outer layer (for lack of a better term). Then you get down to the meat. Soooooo juicy. It's like the most perfectly cooked fall-off-the-bone ribs, but chicken. And hell, even the bones were tasty. No, I didn't eat those, but you better believe I sucked every speck of meat off of them like you do with salted peanut shells. Oh, and the flavor was stellar as well. Smoky, spicy, salty, and a little bit of sweet. I can't wait to get back and be a carnivore of a different "prey", but until then I've got my dreams of chicken wings dancing through my head. read more

The best food I've had in so long. The cook was great! The service was great and attentive! Seat yourself restaurant which can be a plus especially during a pandemic. I cannot say anything bad about our food. I raved about the Dirty Tots without hot sauce, for DAYS!! First thing: you must eat here But warning they have no air conditioning so don't plan on being comfortable, but plan on enjoying the food and experience. The staff is super friendly and enthusiastic about their food. If you ask them about something on the menu they are bound to tell you the truth of what is going to be better than an another item. An ample beer list is more than enough, plus it's next to twenty tap if you needed to drink more. Their hamburgers are scrumptious, greasey, leave you wanting to finish every bite even though you are full. Only get the smaller side of fries it's more than enough for two people. The wings fall off the bone, I loved them without sauce but if you must beware spicy means spicy here! My mother is in love with corn dogs, the homemade batter makes them different from that fair food you might think they belong to. I hate most hotdogs so by design I should hate this. But their all beef frank even left me wondering had all corn dogs tasted like that as a kid they may have been my favorite food. The corned beef and pastrami sandwich is better than any I have had, next time I want a little more extra cheese and one to take home for lunch the next day! They are seriously amazing and it will be a tough decision. I had a bite of the wet Italian beef and for being outside of Chicago this place knows what's going on, maybe it's all the sports flags inside! So if you get anything I talk about and ate not a vegetarian you won't be disappointed. Fat Dan's is one of the great places in Broad Ripple! It's messy, and greasy, and all things that will create joy in your life as you may or may not die of a heart attack. And I'm perfectly happy about that. My favorite experience here was a delightful pulled pork sandwich that probably is the best pulled pork I've ever tasted. Ever. Coupled with an Angry Orchard, and I'm one happy girl. And their fries... one order is enough for an entire table to share. They are delicious. Everything about Fat Dan's is lovely. I grew up in Chicago. Love food. This place is great just be careful if you get the Maxwell Street Polish. If you ever had the original you will hate this one. Burgers are amazing, I think better than Boogie Burger. I still haven't tried the Italian beef there but I'm going to just stick to the burgers. As I was walking to my usual SoBro go-to for lunch today, this new establishment caught my eye: 'Chicago-Style Deli, Local Beer on Tap,' the sign read, Cubbies and Bears flags a'flyin, Vienna poster in the window. Okay, I know what you're thinking: "Authentic Chicago Dogs in 'Nap Town? Yeah right..." I was skeptical myself, but I decided to give it a shot anyway. Boy, am I glad I did. It's as close as you get to Wrigley this far south of Gary; Vienna dogs, Italian beef, Polish, smoked ribs, corned beef, freakin' OLD STYLE on TAP. They even play the blues. Huhge! The menu is solid, offering a good variety of classic American pub fare supported on the foundation of Chicago tradition. I was told the 'fat burger' is a hot ticket, their wings, brisket, and pulled pork are all smoked in-house, and that they source local, never frozen ingredients. I liked that. Cubs paraphernalia hung all around, a couple of TVs with the games on, and chalk-boards on the walls for the restless kiddos. Well played. The service was excellent - greeted at the door with welcomes and smiles, a nice gent helped us decipher the menu and set us on a straight course. I went with the 'Chicago Combo': 1/2 Italian beef 1/2 Italian sausage with hot peppers, all piled on a dipped Italian roll, comboed with a portion of fries that's fit for three (and luckily for us, we had just that many...). They serve you on a piece of wax paper, which I thought was a unique, nostalgic ball-park touch. I'm a fan. Took a bite, sipped the Old Style, closed my eyes and imagined sitting in the outfield bleachers. Open 'em back up - damn, still in Indy. Great place to grab a burger and beer and have outdoor seating. Really cool little place- we had the Wells St. FatBurger and homemade-style fries. It was the best burger I've had in a very long time. It came with gorgonzola cheese and caramelized onions- gooey and would've been messy if it had survived long enough. The fries are also good- a small order easily feeds two. Burgers and fries came served on wide sheet of deli paper. Great beer selection. Hate to leave 3 stars with this place, but underwhelmed about sums it up. I know I will be back and update, but for now, here it is. The pastrami and corned beef sandwich may have been the smallest sandwich that I have ever paid for. It's thickness was comparable to 2 pieces of thick cut Bologna with cheese and was equal parts beef and pastrami. All on toast. And not buttered delicious toasted bread, but toast. My fingers were hardly greasy and my toddler could have eaten the sandwich. I did not take a pic because all the pics in yelp clearly show a skinny version of that sandwich. Skip over to the Wells St burger and I'll start with this, why can nobody cook a medium burger? It doesn't ruin it for me. But why ask if you can never deliver Indianapolis!? And once again skimpy, skimpy toppings. Big yummy burger patty with enough toppings for a mcdouble... The flavor was there, but this was not a Chicago experience. In Chicago I would have paid less and gotten more. I really think overall this is a killer spot. Most of the pics are a testament to this. And, the flavors were all on point. I stopped late on a Thursday night and this place was hopping. I didn't time my visit well, as the bar was crowded for the IU game and I am a proud Boilermaker! We made our way to the back where there was a table available. We were greeted promptly and ordered a couple beers. I'd have to recommend going for the Old Style on tap! Food wise this place is pretty okay. I loved their corn dog (I was needing a little drunk food, okay?) and BBQ wings. However, don't be fooled by their "best fries in the universe". Both of us decided they were definitely nowhere close. They were soggy and greasy, words that don't describe yummy fries. The food was brought out on sheets of paper making eating fun and clean up a breeze. I thought that was fun. All in all, I might be back for some late night eats, but I'll definitely be back for some Old Style! read more

I remember the first time I ate at Fat Dan's, solely because I think the I finally passed the Wake N Bake I ate over two months. That was DELICIOUS. I came here with some friends (one of them is regrettably a Bears fan) and this may have been the smartest suggestion that's ever left their mouths. We started with the Dirty Tots and the spice alone made my backside twitch. They LOAD those bad boys up with hot sauce, pulled pork and cheese. This will almost certainly feed 4 unless you're me, than just yourself. For the entrees I've gotten the Wake N Bake and the Wells St Fat Burger. You can't go wrong with either, unless you don't order either of them. Another thing I like about this place is the rotating draft board. There's always a good mix of beers and if you're a skinny jean wearing, flannel shirt sporting, beard sporting hipster they even carry your badge of honor Old Style on draft. read more

I love the delicious messy sandwiches and Fat Dan's has plenty of them including the burgers and pulled pork. The fries just add to the deliciousness. When you first see the gigantic pile, it is a bit overwhelming but it does not matter. After one, you cannot stop. I love options and the fact you get normal fries and chip shaped fries that satisfied my needs. For those who are not comfortable with licking the sauce off your fingers, Fat Dan's might not be the place for you. Indy's got an emerging craft burger scene - awesome! Paying $15 for a dry quinoa burger on a dry, whole-wheat bun - not awesome! Enter Fat Dan's Deli, creator of the Not-So-Fat Black Bean Burger. Vegetarian? Yes. Still greasy and delicious? HELL YES. This is the best veggie burger in Indiana, possibly the entire Midwest. They could serve it to me on the ground of a landfill and I would still give them a 5-star rating, it is THAT GOOD. But fear not - they serve it on the table with a side of delicious hand-cut fries and some pretty solid beer options. I can not say enough great things about this place. I thought we were going to walk in and order at a counter. This is a sit down and be served restaurant and the service was phenomenal. This place is also very kid friendly. Which is odd because it has a very bar feel to it. The food is delicious. Everything is served on big white pieces of paper. The food is okay but there is never anywhere to sit. There are no reservations or even seating lists so be prepared to have someone cut in front of you. If it's during a week day then you should be fine but if it's during the evening or weekend then I'd recommend going elsewhere unless you enjoy wasting your life. read more

Um. I died in here. From tasty food overload. Alex H and my fiancé took me here for dinner a few weeks ago. I ordered the standard burger and added on smoked bacon. Holy Moly. This burger just tasted rich and delicious and unhealthy. The smoked bacon, the juicy beef patty, lettuce, tomato, mayo were all resting between two soft buttery buns. I could only take down half of that bad boy, but I kept wishing I could fit in more. It was just as good as leftovers. I sampled the pulled pork, which was very good and also the smoked meatloaf which was out of this world. We also got a large order of french fries to share and I did enjoy these. I loved the exterior of the fry, however, many of them were underdone and way too...solid. I am not a total mushy fry fan, but these puppies could have used a few more seconds to minutes in the fryer. Other than that, when I got a good one, it was completely satisfied my french fry craving. They have a large beer menu, but only a few wines (meh :-/). I would add in another white than Chardonnay, but that's just me! The atmosphere is reminiscent of a Chicago eatery (pull-up front window, etc.) but overall, this place feels like Indy. I will definitely be back to enjoy more food and possibly to try an order of tots. read more

A must go-to in Broadripple. I went for my first time last night and loved it! Very much a cubs bar.. so if you are a cubbies fan, you must go immediately, The atmosphere was great! Pretty packed for a Thursday night. They had a wide selection of beer on draft. Live music was an extra plus. I ordered the smoked wings and holy-moley... these might be the best wings i've ever had! They fell right off the bone and I was in heaven. They come in 5 or 10. Get the 10 and enjoy the extras for lunch the next day! Fries were a good side as well. My friend said he's tried almost everything on the menu and hasn't come across something he hasn't liked once. I am looking forward to trying their veggie burger next time. Wow. This is a great bar/restaurant. I am not usually a big wing fan at all but their wings are worth it! I got their tater tots and they were really fried and heavy (I mean what do you expect right?) but I have had better. The atmosphere is super casual and I love it. My friends and I have a competition to see who has the best wings in town. This weekend it was Fat Dan's Deli's chance to shine. The place was pretty busy, but luckily we were able to get a table right away. They had a nice beer selection that included a number of local craft beers. If you're looking for liquor, this place only has beer and wine. Given that they are known for their wings, bbq and brisket I think bourbon might be a good add to their bar menu. That's just me though ;) I ordered their wings with their hot bbq sauce. The wings were very meaty and juicy. The seasoning was good, but the hot bbq sauce could have been a little hotter. I enjoy spice. They also do something a little different in that you dip your wings into the sauce. I'm not so much a fan of that. I think they would be better if they were already tossed in the sauce. Service was okay. Not a lot of enthusiasm going on with our waitress. But she filled our drinks and brought our food so I won't complain. I will say the wings themselves were good, but I do enjoy the flavors of some other local favorite wing spots. For a Chicago restaurant outside of Chicago this place isn't too bad. My friend had the wings which he said we decent but not great. I had the Havana burger, which was a cheeseburger with smoked pork on top. The burger was mediocre (tasted like a pre-made frozen patty with no seasoning) but the pork was really good. I'd like to go back and try more of the deli foods, as I think that is their specialty and not the burgers that take up the entire middle section of the menu. read more

The food... It's good because it's the only place in Indy that serves "Chicago style" greasy south side grub. Fries are usually covered in salt, the food is huge and soaked with butter and sauce... It's good. The service is usually decent, friendly, with a Faus-hipsterish attitude that could be interpreted as condescension. But the food is good. Last night, a server (don't know her name - she never introduced herself), who after bussing a couple of glasses from our table - didn't ask us if we wanted anything, just said "I'll be right back", then decided to wave a hand at us when hailed politely. After a brief and embarrassing rebuke from the employee expressing in an highly unprofessional tone that she was "busy", she offered to give us menus 13 minutes after she busses the table and after berating my friend. This terrible representative of the Fat Dan's name, after a gasp from our and neighboring customers over her initial rant, continued to mouth off in that "I'm wrong but not going to admit it" attitude - so childish. I told her she should take a class in service and exited the establishment. Good bye Fat Dan's. I and my friends will not return to indulge in your greasy grub, because an employee lost her mind and broke the first rule of serving - the customer is always right (and a server should never do all they can to embarrass a paying customer, and... Well, she broke all the rules - all of them.) I've been a server in greasy spoon and high class joints, and I've worked with some jerks, but I've never experienced, or seen anyone in a restaurant experience, the level of disrespect and attitude I saw last night. We have been here a few times since we moved to Indiana, thanks to the suggestion from our Realtor. It's now my dads favorite place to eat as well when he comes out to visit us from Vegas. I have always been impressed with the delicious food, it never disappoints. Last time we went, though, our waitress really made our experience and made me want to write a review. We had young kids with us, it was a Friday night, we had had a long day and the kids were exhausted. The sweet waitress brought out a thing of fries for the kids to snack on while we waited for our food (aside from the order). She was heaven sent as I had little ones crying over how hungry they were after a long day at the zoo. It was something small, but she went above and beyond. Overall, awesome place and will continue to be a family favorite! read more

I was on the search for a delicious Italian Beef Sandwich here in Indy. Since I was in Chicago for the weekend and was lucky enough to have Portillo's, I wanted more. (Greedy!) All my research showed that Fat Dan's was the best spot in Indy for a chicago-style Italian Beef. Beyond that, my husband and I were on the hunt for some sloppy, greasy, delicious food- Fat Dan's seemed to have it down to an art. The atmosphere was very dive bar. They serve everything in a disposable way, which is pretty cool. Server/Bartender were both really helpful and on top of things. Italian Beef- Large portion size, the beef was extremely good, and they offer to serve it dry, dipped or wet. (I went with dry, sauce on the side.) Then they top it with a lot of giardiniera (maybe a little too much.) I think the only thing I wasn't completely fond of was the softness of the bread. I think a little bit of crust makes for a better texture on sandwiches like this, but overall it was pretty good! (Although Portillo's is still miles better. Dirty Tater Tots- My favorite! They are tater tots, layered with cheese sauce, pulled pork, house made hot sauce, and scallions. As a heat lover, the hot sauce was still a little much. It was DRENCHED. Next time (oh yes, there will be a next time) I will ask for it on the side. My side will have a hefty amount, but my husband isn't quite the spice lover as I am. Huge serving, HELLA delicious. Wake-N-Bake Burger- Hubs had this, and he was impressed with the medium cook of the burger. It was HUGE, and had ham, bacon, an egg, and a layer of smushed tater tots on it. I tried a bite, and have to agree...it was pretty great. He's the burger lover though, and says it was above average, but not his favorite. Overall it was a great experience and the food was good. HOWEVER. When we got home, my husband was sick for the rest of the night. I was a little sick for a little while. This would be 5 stars if we weren't just so sick so soon after eating the delicious fatty foods. Given, it's bound to happen with this kind of food. But we have had some great, greasy, grubby food without such a bad "after experience." read more

okay, so....i would come here for lunch to-go and the Italian Beefs are the best in this city..(make sure if you want it 'dipped Chicago style', tell them to dunk it otherwise it will come just wet) I also had the Ruben a few times, great sandwich too! BUT...The Smoked Wings...HOLY *&^^&*&^^%^^&!!!! they are the DEAL up in there!
