Try it with the apricot topping and you won't regret! 2.veggie scramble - sharp cheddar cheese overload on fresh mushrooms, spinach, onions, and yellow bell peps. This is the place for you to take your parents or grandparents for a meal. We were the only ones with out a senior citizen at our table. There is a small parking lot in the front of the restaurant. You can also find street parking right in front on Sundays. The Sunday menu is a bit limited. It is made for the brunch guests. Breakfast, salads, and sandwiches. The burger was very good and if you get it with cheddar, they grate you a pile of cheese on top. I had the salad and I was happily surprised I liked the dressing. Usually there is full menu that includes full old fashion dinners like meatloaf. Seating is comfortable. It's not a private place and tends to be loud. They have a bakery so you can either eat dessert in or take something to go. read more

Every now and then, my director brings an army of Fat Apple's pies during the holiday's to work. Speaking from an eating standpoint, these pies are absolutely delicious! As far as I can recall, I've had their apple pie (priorities), Georgia Pecan, Pumpkin, chocolate cream, banana cream, blueberry and lemon meringue pies. My favorite is currently a tie between banana cream and apple pie. Lemon meringue for me stands alone in comparison. All the pies here are made fresh and taste top notch as to what you'd expect. Had the "Power salad", with greens and quinoa. It was very nice but at $13.50 +4.25 for a bit of grilled chicken on top, that was a $16.75 + tax + tip salad for lunch. Ouch. I also tried a slice of a berry pie, and it was great. Service is excellent. Really friendly. I came back before 11am to try the breakfast signature dishes. The apple pancake for $10 is a small thin pancake with a handful of semi-cooked thin apple chunks and a lot of cinnamon. Might work as a small dessert at the end of a meal, but expensive for a dessert. Same problem with the waffle. The waffle is super thin and pretty crispy. Nothing wrong with that except the price given that it is not filling at all. For the price they should give a stack of three, like restaurants do for pancakes. One of their waffles alone is not worth the price. Overall, a nice place. I think the breakfast and lunch dishes are good but prices are excessive for what you get. So, I won't be coming back. Tip1: If you plan on coming for breakfast/brunch options, know that the breakfast menu ends at 11am. I arrived at 11:45 and could not order the waffle I wanted. Tip2: they don't have a private parking and street parking is challenging in this area. You will likely have to park a couple of blocks in a residential street. Tip3: they get very busy for lunch. Came here for breakfast with a girlfriend. We both ordered pumpkin pancakes and they were delicious! This was in December, and I'm so happy they kept this on the menu (not sure if it's seasonal or always there). I thought I had missed it when October ended. We ordered it as a meal which included bacon, and an egg. It comes with 4 small pancakes in a stack. For $10 it seemed like a pretty good deal and was very filling and satisfying! They also had this jam on the table that was delicious! I'd say this is a great place to get your standard breakfast foods. The wait isn't terribly long - we were seated right away and there seemed to be a fairly steady stream of people coming in and out. So it's popular but not SF brunch central 2 hour wait popular, which I'm thankful for. The food is simple and delicious, and food presentation for you instagram brunch-ers is adequate but not really anything special. For breakfast, I always get the Waffle Special with Blueberry Sauce and Whipped Cream on the side. I make sure it's on the side so my waffle doesn't get soggy. This time the waffle was a little over cooked and really crunchy. Otherwise, it's usually cooked just right. read more

3.5 I thought with a name like Fat Apples, I would leave the place happy, jolly fat from all the apple assorted pies/turnovers in my tummy. I discovered that after my bigger than average, pizza level flat buttermilk waffle (plus very lonely one sausage and three bites portion of scrambled eggs), I was full but not crazy full, which is how I like my breakfasts to make me feel. Amusing herd of people line on Sundays while the lucky seated diners flaunt their waffles, pancakes, burgers, and other assorted breakfast pastries at those still waiting behind the cattle door. The wait wasn't long, but I'm not sure it's worth it to wait at all (I correlate the wait with how good the food has to be.). Small restaurant. Buttermilk waffle was good to be sure - delicious with just the right amount of sweetness. Non-baked/carb breakfast items so-so. I've had their olallieberry pie here before. It's my boyfriend's favorite. I think it's okay. It reminds me of Marie Callendars' razzleberry pie except Fat Apple's top crust has a peppery flavor I didn't really care for. Anyway, just actually ate at the restaurant this morning. I have the day off today and decided to head over excited about some banana pancakes I spied in the picture section here... Unfortunately I didn't see those on the menu. I don't know if those are some sort of seasonal special or what. So the second thing on my "to try" list was the pumpkin pancakes because I really love pancakes, and some yelpers said they were great... ... And they were. They were really good. Nice and think and a slight taste of pumpkin sprinkled with some powder sugar. I'm not a huge fan of syrup so a pancake that packs a lot of a taste by itself is great to me. I dipped it in the syrup and it was good, but the best combo I found was their olallieberry-raspberry jam spread across the top. Now that was good. The boyfriend got some blueberry waffles, he said they were good. I noticed a couple of people around us got the burgers which looked really good with a huge mound of shredded cheddar cheese on it. We didn't save room for his beloved olallieberry pie so we took 2 slices home. Fat Apple's is the closest place of business to my house. I wake up on a Saturday, put on something that doesn't have a stain on it, and walk out my door to get breakfast. I owe Fat Apple's a big thanks for rehabilitating my relationship with corned beef. It was strained, I admit, but not anymore. Their corned beef hash is my favorite. The egg dishes come with your choice of toast or pastry, for no extra charge. The blueberry cheese danish is insane. As is the cinnamon twist. I always opt for the toast to save on calories... but end up eating half of my fiance's pastry anyway (sorry, Andrew). They're always really fast so when my shower takes too long or I smear mascara everywhere or none of my clothes look good that day and we're running late for x, y, or z plans and we only have a half hour for breakfast... they totally make it happen. The chicken pot pie for dinner is delicious; not overly creamy and has a great, fresh flavor. The vegetables that come with the meatloaf are actually seasoned! A rare find, I feel -- too many places steam 'em, throw 'em on your plate, and call it a day. The staff is always super nice and happy to help. Oh! And they griddle a mean pancake, too. read more

3.5 stars I think this Fat Apples is not as great as the El Cerrito location, but it still does a decent job on brunch. I love that for some dishes they give you an option for toast or pastry. My advice is to check out the pastry before sitting down at your table to see if there's anything that catches your eye. When I came here, the pastry selection was very limited (cinnamon bun and blueberry scone only). I hope this was just bad luck and that I happened to arrive when they were low on pastries, but if this is typical of the Berkeley location, then that would be a good enough reason to go to the El Cerrito location (which has always had an expansive selection of pastries every time I've been there). I had the Ranch Scramble which was solid. It consisted of scrambled eggs with bacon, ham, bell peppers, tomatoes, onions, and cheddar. You also can't go wrong with the pumpkin pancakes! So, my homegirl and I talked about grabbing breakfast and she mentioned "Fat Apples." I completely forgot that this restaurant still existed- but now to my knowledge, it is still there and it was a pretty good experience. On a fluke, I found a parking space right in the front, which may not always occur, but it definitely added to my pleasant experience. Upon arrival, my friend, and I were warmly greeted and seated by a friendly hostess. After being seated, we were greeted by a kind waitress, who was knowledgeable about the menu. I ordered the corned beef hash which was great! I was impressed with how good the food tasted. By the look of the small town looking restaurant- I believe that my expectations may have been a tad lower, there was no legit reason for me to assume that the food would be subpar, but I couldn't help it because the restaurant looked a bit old school; but you know the old saying, "Don't judge a book by its cover!" My dad told me to check out Fat Apples. Apparently, my uncle had gone here before and their pumpkin pancakes were to die for. So, I managed to coerce a friend in brunching it with me and headed over to Fat Apples to satisfy my pancake fantasies. First problem, walking from UC Berkeley to Fat Apples is not a fast easy walk. So by the time, we arrived at Fat Apples a good 25 minutes later, we were two hungry college students hoping that Fat Apples would be worth the walk. I ordered their pumpkin pancakes with a side of chicken apple sausages and a slice of ollalieberry pie. My friend ordered the pancake special with a side of potatoes. Second problem, their portions were old people size, meaning that for 2 hungry college students on a limited budget, disbelief soared on our face as we saw that the shortstack only contained 4 women's palm size pancakes and my sausages were comprised of 2 small sausages. But, what Fat Apples missed up on size, they definitely made up in quality. Their pumpkin pancakes are yummy and with a light splash of maple syrup, you have a perfect moment of cinnamon, pumpkin, and maple syrup. Overall, Fat Apples was an enjoyable brunch, but was not worth the long walk unless you're the walking sort. When I had told a friend that i was going to Fat Apple's, he demanded that I get the cheese puffs and that I get some from him as well. Food: cheese puffs - so good. They were filled with sweetened cream cheese and the outside was so flakey. I would definitely come back for these cheese puffs. French toast - 3 huge pieces of french toast. It was decent - like typical french toast. Pumpkin pancakes - 4 pancakes. The pancakes were nicely pumpkin flavored, but nothing too amazing. Apple filled pancake - HUGE, and the nice caramelized apples on the inside was good. I thought they would just be chunks of apple, but the caramelization was delicious. Blueberry Waffles - yum! Blueberries was especially good with the waffles, but they also had this olallieberry-raspberry jam that also went great with it. Overall, I had some good food with some great friends. A long-awaited friend reunion early in the morning meant only one thing: Friday brunch. And what better place to do brunch than on a quaint little street corner in North Berkeley. Packed with the typical generation that you would see at a place like this, we were definitely the odd ones out at Fat Apples, but that didn't stop us. We started out with the widely raved about cheese puffs, which definitely lived up to their expectation. Very flaky on the outside, and tender, moist, and full of cheesy flavor on the inside. Don't expect anything like cheddar, though. It's pretty sweet, but still maintains the cheesy feeling. I ordered the Apfelpfannkuchen, which in German is simply "Apple-filled pancake." It was served with very wet sour cream, which didn't go along with the pancake at all. The dish itself was just alright. Small bits of apple spread throughout the pancake, but nothing too special. For $8, I don't know if I'd come back for it. I also had the chance to try a bit of the French Toast and Blueberry Waffles, which were all very typical. I've had much better waffles at IHOP before, and they definitely can't compare to Belgium. Our other friend got the Pumpkin pancakes, which I didn't try since I hate pumpkin. One thing that stood out here for me is their olallieberry sauce. To sum it up, olallieberry is 1/2 blackberry, 1/4 raspberry, and 1/4 dewberry, which all somehow happened to mate and create this wonderful berry. I ordered a week ago a bacon and cheese quiche for 11/23. They said yes. Then they called to say " they could not have it on that day". They agreed it would be freshly made on th 22nd instead. Took my name phone etc. Went there no one knew my order,no fresh quiche,but a refridgerated one of a different flavor. I had committed to bring a quiche somewhere so could not walk out. I had a special three year-old bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon, and also a very special two year-old boy. These two things don't always fit in well together for a night out with the missus. But tonight I learned differently. Fat Apple's allows you to bring your own. Not many of their patrons do. I called ahead, so I know. And their burgers, while not blow you away fantastic, are made with Niman beef and expertly cooked. My medium rare was pink throughout, and a good bit pinker in the center. But it was a lovely time. Great for a kid. Great accompaniment for a great bottle of wine. Great seasonal fruit crisp of peaches and berries - warmed - with a mound of vanilla ice cream, of course. The whole ticket was under $40 which included tip. I was floored. If we weren't leaving the bay area in two days, I would make this a monthly ritual. I mean... how many burgers can one man have. (NB the critic in me would suggest the burgers are a little too dense - and if you are having a nice bottle of wine, stay away from the pickle... obviously). Good food, good service. This is one of two locations that I know of (the other is on Fairmount in El Cerritos) and has definitely earned it's excellent reputation for good food and great service. As one of Berkeley's many "woke" restaurants, I found it a little distressing that one my companions had difficulty finding a vegetarian meal on the menu that was still available late on a Sunday afternoon. He ended up with a veggie burger, but the veggie quiche (which is excellent) had sold out and we were quite surprised to find such a limited selection of available veggie items from which to choose. read more

I thought I would give them a second try. This was an order for delivery and I don't even know how to describe it. What I received look like an Eggo waffle that was smashed it was tiny the bacon was burned. The danish was awful. And on top of everything this isn't even what I ordered. So for 40 bucks I got this smashed in edible undercooked, waffle, two burned pieces of bacon, some slimy scrambled eggs and some coffee cake that didn't even want. 40 bucks!!!!! they didn't even make an effort to make it look appealing. Went to Fat Apple's for breakfast and was treated to some delicious, mouthwatering pastries. The cheese puff was perfectly flaky and the cheese inside was delicious as well. I enjoyed the blueberry danish the most though! Essentially a large and more flat cheese puff but with delicious pieces of blueberry and an amazing crumble. I will definitely come back to have it again. The famous pumpkin pancakes weren't super great, in my opinion. They were actually pretty bitter even drowned in maple syrup. The waffle were forgettable as well even with the amazing maple syrup. It just seemed too small of a portion for it's price. Overall, the price was pretty disappointing for the main dishes and the main dishes didn't shine. I won't be back for a sit down breakfast, but I'll always enjoy their pastries. This place used to be booming w families and mixed groups of folks. The food is consistently good, staff are thoughtful and helpful but the atmosphere has changed w the addition of more restaurants in town. I miss the vibrancy of the old tried and true place. Wish the owner would do something more inventive to entice younger folks and families to make this place more alive again. Biggest draw these days seems to be seniors eating earlier. I'm not sure what everyone is complaining about? I really like Fat Apple's. It's not post modern and hipster like most Berkeley cafes and restaurants, but it has its own charm! As promised by other Yelper's reviews: the Cheese Puffs were absolutely delicious! In addition to the Cheese Puff, I had the short stack of Pumpkin Pancakes (I'm not a huge pancake fan...) and they were definitely worth going back for! I also had the Spicy Tortilla Scramble and it was incredible!!! The only disappointment was the home fried potatoes which were a bit bland for my taste (however, they were cooked perfectly - not over or under cooked - just need more seasoning or to be fried). I had been to the one in Kensington a few years back and happened upon this smaller version today. The bakery portion was meager so I ordered quiche while my partner ordered the vegetarian chili. The spinach-mushroom quiche with salad was $10.33. I regret not taking a photo of the quiche because it was so small...it kind of slumped. For that price I was really expecting something a bit bigger and nicer. You can get this lovely quiche dish at Cafe Beaujolais in Mendocino for ~$12 that is remarkable...now even more so. But on top of already loving them, my mom and me decided to have my birthday dinner there and it was GREAT! We got their around 8:15 which is close to closing but they welcomed us happily and let us choose where to sit. Our server was a young lovely gentleman who was chipper and excited to have us. My mom told him that it was my birthday and he treated us like queens! Gave us a couple extra sips of wine and added cucumbers to my salad Even though they were low on deserts, they still made our to-go chocolate malted milkshake (fantastic omg) magical by putting whipped cream, a candle and bringing his coworkers out to sing me happy birthday! Ooooh you gotta try the pumpkin pancakes, they're so fluffy and flavory and round and delicious. I got the short stack with a side of homefries and a latte, and it was *amazzingg*. The homefries were more like potatoes than hashbrowns, and I usually prefer the latter. Still great though. The vibe and atmosphere is so artsy and relaxing, the service is happy and friendly, and the location is nice and quiet. Easy to get there if you take the bus (79 line).
