I live in Borrego and took a drive up to Julian just to go to Fat Anthony's for lunch. Really cute place with Italian music playing outside. Anthony and his staff are very welcoming and super sweet. Their sandwiches are huge. I got a 6 inch Big Meano and they have tons of toppings to add. I made two meals out of it! I also bought a couple of his parfait cheesecake cups. I had the lemon and the mixed berry. They were so delicious. He had a steady stream of customers and lots of things to pick from to feed your belly. Super tasty but I was only able to finish half the sandwich. (Glad I didn't get the larger size.). I took the rest home to enjoy later! Very fresh and nicely prepared. One of my friends ordered a tuna salad (they don't have a gluten free bread option) and it was huge. Also very tasty. I've seen the sign "coming soon" for months. My cravings for a quality deli have been insatiable. Finally I heard word they were open and I headed on in ASAP . Anthony is such a people person I can see why he does what he does; also it is clear he loves what he does. I thought it was going to be a sandwich shop only but was pleased to discover it's a deli also. After Anthony offered up a few amazing samples the Italian sausage was calling my name. I got it to go. Also a turkey sandwich and cannoli. First off I was so happy with the Italian sausage! It was in a red gravy sauce with onions and peppers as requested. This is quite possibly the best sausage I've had since leaving the Midwest. Definitely sweet with a peppery finish. My partner really enjoyed her turkey sandwich and cannoli. We liked everything so much we went back today and got breakfast sausage and another sandwich for the kids. I also ordered some cappicola, prosciutto, and hard salami. It was all great. The prices are awesome here. Local or otherwise no complaints. It sounds like Anthony has both alot of ideas and is open to new ideas. I don't think people will be disappointed giving this establishment a shot One fair warning is watch out for ingredients in the deli meats. Loved this unassuming deli shop! A little off the path, this Deli is both cute on the outside and inside! When we first came in, there was already a little line of people. The menu was huge and there were so many choices. I originally asked about what mortadella was and he not only kindly answered my question, he actually gave my mother and me a sample! His daughter was super sweet as well (Family owned is always a plus in our book!). He was so incredibly sweet with other customers as well. A customer came in and commented about the cheese, and a few moments later, the man behind the counter actually gave him a little sample of the cheese. The customer thanked him enthusiastically. We were curious about the pickled eggs (I've never had one before!) and he let us know that all the pickled items are handmade and pickled in-house! We bought one and shared it and MAN, I loved it! I'm a huge fan of sour stuff so it was the right amount of creaminess and tang (My mother didn't HAH, but oh well. More for me!). We waited for about 25 minutes for 3 sandwiches and we ate at the outdoor area just across the way. When we opened the sandwiches, I was SHOCKED with how much stuff it came with!! It was about 5-6 inches thick and filled to the brim with not only the most delicious tasting meats, but with fresh veggies as well. If we're ever in the area again, we're definitely coming back. Having enjoyed sub sandwiches since I was knee high to a Chianti bottle, I was pleasantly surprised when I visited Fat Anthony's today and ordered the Big Meano. I ordered it with veggies (lettuce, onion and tomato) and Italian dressing (oil and vinegar......absolutely NO mustard or mayo) along with seasoning. The sandwich came on a fresh, soft roll and the veggies tasted fresh as well. The Italian cold cuts were "good and plenty" (isn't that a candy?).
