Fat Andy's -- First Visit Review Fat Andy's has taken to social media to promote their product, and the posts feature Andrew, who must be our very own Fat Andy. We decided to take an early lunch and head over to Santa Fe to give the place a go. The establishment presents as clean and friendly, with a bit of an unfinished, "there is more to come" vibe. It feels like a good startup should. Andy was manning the counter and seemed to genuinely enjoy engaging with customers as they ordered. He pointed out the specials a few times as we grazed the menu selections. The hot pastrami had its very own sign, so I took that as a sign. I like a good pastrami. We picked out a table and waited for our food. After a short while, we heard our name called and I retrieved the wrapped sandwiches. The missus had the half turkey, and I went with the full-size hot pastrami. Now, before I go too far, my first instinct was to order the monster signature sandwich called "The Fat Andy." I did have that pang of guilt at first, thinking I really didn't want to be Fat Jeff anymore, so I thought better of it. The sandwiches were good. The ingredients were fresh, the lettuce was crisp, and the peppers on my pastrami were absolutely a winner. No disappointment there at all. The portions were healthy, and the side of pasta I chose was spot on with its mix of ingredients and the tang of the dressing. The sandwich bread, or hoagie rolls, were solid and appeared to be fresh. All of that being said, we found Fat Andy's to be a good value. For some critique -- and I go back to not ordering the signature sandwich, which looked from the menu description to have some special touches -- the sandwiches we ordered on this first visit were made with the same type of ingredients one can buy at most deli counters featuring Boar's Head products. The bread was good, but not fancy, and did not seem to contain anything especially unique that made it feel like a signature sandwich experience. Now don't get me wrong. Even with great ingredients, there is skill in putting together a good sandwich, so I am not discounting them on where they source their products. But a true deli sandwich experience requires something that makes the place stand out just a little. Aside from the great personality Andy brings to his customers, the sandwiches on this trip did not make me feel like they stood above most other good deli sandwiches. That said, I live a very short drive from Andy's, and I hope to watch it grow. I also hope to experience more of the fun Andy seems to be having by sharing his food and his creations with the community. I encourage everyone to give Andy a shout and tell him Jeff sent you. I love their place, big bucks for a big sandwhich but will you not leave hungry and might even have left overs. I have tried many of the special of the days and thoroughly enjoyed all of them that I did try. I did dip into their hot sandwhiches which I found to be ok, average at best I supposed but Andrew is very welcoming, funny. Their daily made variety type of sandwhichs are on point. I arrived about 10 minutes before they opened and there were 5 cars waiting for it to open. Walked in and it's not fancy on the inside but comfortable and welcoming. They have pre-packed items you can purchase (pasta, olives, olive oil, various types of their salads and desserts.). I got the hot roast beef with Swiss and also the Italian. The roast beef was good but a little dry. However, I had to wait to eat it so I've I'd been able to eat it right away my opinion might be different. If I get it again I'll get some au juis with it. If you hate flavor then do not come here! It was delicious and flavorful. Andy is a great cook and salesman. We also had chicken alfredo, veggie soup and chicken gnocchi soup, it's probably the best soups I have ever had. I took some left over garlic bread and put it in my soup and nostalgia! Tried this place for the 1st time last weekend and loved it! The BEST tasting Italian sub I've ever had and it was loaded with quality meats and cheeses. You definitely get more than you paid for. This place is only 10 minutes away from my home ... scares me to think how often I will be coming back. And the owner? Couldn't be nicer and more personable. He made some recommendations, pointed to the different cases and what was in them. Then he informed me they make 200 cannoli's every Saturday and when they're gone they're gone. Andy was manning the register and the vibe is like an east coast delicatessen. I got a hot italian sausage and peppers sub with pasta salad side. Andy hollered out to me as I left asking how it was. We talked briefly about his heritage (Palermo) - I explained my husband's family hails from Cefalu Sicily and I lived in Southern Italy for 8 years. He explained he has lots of deli meats besides mortadella but i told him i will be back specifically for that! My wife loves the Roast Beef sandwich, and my daughter and I got Chicken Parmesan and it was so good, we both really enjoyed it. Our other daughter got the spaghetti and meatballs, and she said it was really good also. In addition, to really good food, the staff and of course Andy was very hospitable and go out of their way to take care of all the guest.
