Great conversation, great people and a good low cost haircut.

I've been taking my boys (ages 6 and 4) to Fast Phil's for 5 years now. Phil is a sweet heart. One summer day he juggled tennis rackets out on the sidewalk and the number of folks that stopped to chat - everyone from Cambridge police officers to neighbors was impressive. This was my first time at Fast Phil's. I've been looking for a good place to get a haircut since I moved to Boston almost 3 years ago. My criteria: 1) Driving not necessary (or free, easy parking) 2) Close (less than 20 minutes travel time) 3) Either a fantastic haircut for $$$, or a pretty good one for $. I was able to walk to Fast Phil's in less than 10 minutes from near Alewife, sit down immediately, and get a totally reasonable haircut in about 20 minutes for $10. Ten Dollars! Unbelievable. There was a lot of joking around, and a very friendly, lively atmosphere. I'm used to spending $40-60 for a haircut, but I think Fast Phil may have made a convert out of me. read more

It is fast indeed. You can spend more than the $10 it costs here to get a better haircut, but this one is very convenient and probably good enough. (You can also spend $20 to get a not-to-good haircut, so unless it's a special occasion, why take a chance?) I also enjoy listening to the local accents and friendly banter that is constantly filling the place. I needed to get my son's haircut and was fretting where to go. I checked out Yelp and saw the good reviews and figured I would give Fast Phil's a try. My son is 3 and it was his first haircut. Going in to Phil's is like going to a little neighborhood club house. I can't talk sports to keep up with Phil, but I get a kick out of just listening. I pay as if it's a full-price barbershop, because it's as good as any of those, and Phil's work and his clubhouse make him deserve full price even if he doesn't ask it. It's a fun place. read more

Simply put, Fast Phil's is excellent. I have been going there for haircuts ever since I was a freshman in high school back in 2008 and they have never disappointed. I usually only cut my hair a few times a year so I am not that good at giving barbers specific instructions. Despite my vague directions the cut that the staff provides always comes out looking clean and sharp. All of the barbers at Fast Phil's are skilled as well as very friendly. This combined with the great location, fast service (the name fits), and inexpensive prices make for a terrific experience. Despite recommendations from other parents, we just had a terrible experience for our toddler. I said "not too short" and "no clippers/razor, please", the latter because my son is generally terrified of things that buzz. She didn't listen and so my son was scrambling frantically away from her and up my body (he had been sitting on my lap per her instruction). What I didn't see until after she was handing him a balloon is that she nipped him with the clippers in TWO places. He was bleeding from behind his ear and his neck! And his hair is short and completely uneven in both the back and the front - notably shorter in places. I don't even know if she sanitized the clippers after the previous client. I called my pediatrician who told me to clean the cuts and watch for signs of infection. Not much to be done about his hair - it is so short in places that it can't really be adjusted. And right now I'm not going to put my son through another visit elsewhere to even it up ... So I'm pretty upset and would absolutely not go there again. read more

Fast Phil is hilarious and a guy who wants to get to know you not just on a business level but a personal level. You'll find yourself laughing hard at his humor and by the time your haircut is up, you'll have the urge to hang out some more. I wanted to like this place. I really did. It's completely true that they are fast and unbelievably cheap. It's also true that you get what you pay for. This is just about the worst haircut I've ever received. It was uneven in places and just sloppy. Definitely fast though. In the interest of full disclosure, Phil himself did not cut my hair. My hair leaves no room for styling so when I get a cut, I go short with the clippers on the top and sides. It's hard to screw that up so I can't speak to Phil's talent. But he's the cheapest around. I first went to Phil's on a Saturday in December, around xmas, and he passed around shots of grand marnier at 10am. His place is literally a tiny shack. He's got 80s sports icons covering every inch of the wall. The atmosphere makes me feel like I've entered old world Somerville. Boston accents, dirty jokes, Phil's hair gel. I starting going to Zen for a cut color 5 years ago, when she worked at a high-end solon. I never imagined getting my hair colored at a barber shop, but I would follow her anywhere! She is efficient, kind and truly an expert in coloring hair. Her prices are extremely reasonable. DO NOT get our haircut here unless you want a standard buzz cut or "Boy's #1. I've given this place 4 chances - 4 haircuts -, and each time they are unable or unwilling to give me a simple trim or anything I've asked for. They refuse to listen. They just cut it all away! What part of "I'm growing it longer, please just even off the ends and make the right and left sides the same length and leave the length all around." And what happened? My hair is as short as a Marine's. They just don't care and just don't cut hair well at all. Last time it was so badly uneven I had to go to another barber the next day to fix it. And they aren't even friendly or nice. I'm an easy going guy, and all I wanted was a minimal trim. Boy, is it true - YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. I have been in Boston for about 5 years now and I have been going to Phil for almost all of that time. I come from a small town where the town barber was my uncle. I tried a few other places but did not feel comfortable spending $30 for a hair cut seeing as I am a guy who likes his hair pretty short. Phil truly is "a place where everyone knows your name".
