He's straight-up one of the nicest people you'll meet maybe in all of Boston and man, he's an expert when it comes to hair. I came in with an open-ended request (short, make it look good) and he gave me his ideas about what would look best. When he was finished, I was very very happy with it. He can make your hair look casual, make it look professional, make it look hip. I've come here every two months for the last 3 years. I've tried nearly every barbershop in the Harvard Square area - this one is by far the best. It's also a super fair price, only $20-$25 after factoring in tip. Tony is the best. Come here for a quick haircut from a local who knows a lot about everything. Very friendly. Convenient. What more can you ask for? Haircuts are decent and you usually receive a nice old fashion razor shave. It's a barber shop, not a stylist, so don't be expecting the Hollywood treatment. Get in and out and on with living! They have a TV, usually playing a sports channel so if you're waiting, which may take from 10 to 20 minutes, can be a nice distraction from the lively conversation taking place. This place is closed Wednesday and accepts cash only; less than $20. Meters out front if you drive. A lot of regulars here but a lot of walk-ins too. read more

Tony is the absolute goat. His conversation skills may be at the same level as his barber skills. If you need fantasy football advice, he's your guy. If you need life advice, he is definitely your guy. His haircuts are excellent. He knows how to make you look presentable and professional. He takes pride in his work. I would never go to another barber. He comes from a family of esteemed barbers from Malden Massachusetts. He will be the barber for my children and hopefully for their children. I'm fussy (and probably old fashioned) about who cuts my hair and how they do it. I don't want it washed first, I want a barber who knows how to cut it dry and who is going to put the work in with the razor where it's needed. I tried 5 or 6 different places when I moved here before finding Fred about 7 years ago, and I have stuck with him since (generally regretting any moments of infidelity caused by scheduling emergencies). Even including messing around with parking on Mass Ave (there are meters outside but you need to be approaching from Harvard Square) I know that I can be in and out in under 20 minutes. Had to get a haircut here for an interview on a weekday. Old-school place with two guys, really small and a tv with the game on to keep you entertained. They use a hot shaving cream foam for your neck and use a straight razor to touch up the sides- 14$ is a bargain in this town. Looked great when I was done, no waiting and guys were really friendly. While searching for a new barber in the city I got many mediocre overpriced haircuts but I've seen Anthony twice now and I will be coming back. For the last 40 years, since I was in school, I have not had my hair cut anywhere but the Central Barber Shop. From Chester to Fred and now Anthony, they've all been the best. Unfortunately, COVID took Fred away from us, but Anthony continues the tradition and instantly knows what you want and will expertly advise if you're not sure what you want. And there's never been a barber here who is not a great conversationalist. Over the years I've heard many barber to customer conversations with these guys and Harvard professors where it was worth the price of a haircut just to listen in. Angry old man, probably the owner, throwing stuff all over the place, talking to him self like I wouldn't hear his complaints about my request to shorten a little bit more than he did the first time. I got a haircut early in the morning on my way to work and the cut was totally uneven across the top and the front. I asked for a fade up the back and the guy shaved a jagged line across the back of my neck. He didn't clean up around the ears or thin it our at all. When he went for the straight razor, he only shaved the sides of my neck and didn't even touch the back. Long story short, this was definitely the worst haircut I've ever had. I've been going here off and on for about 10 years now. For the price, you can't beat it. They've consistently given me the best haircut I've gotten in Boston short of going to a stylist who charges $30-$50 for men's cuts. Central Barber Shop is an old-fashioned, no-fuss barber shop. The cuts are crisp, the conversation enjoyable, and the prices reasonable. Best of all, it's extremely convenient to HLS, and has great hours (starting at 5am). Only thing to remember is that they're closed Wednesday - that's tripped me up a few times. read more

I live in Mission Hill, Boston, and I've been going to Central Barbers for about 35 years now, since Chester was the owner and chief barber and Fred was his younger partner. Chester, a great old guy, retired quite a few years ago and has since passed on. Fred's owned the business since Chester's retirement and the place is still the same: a friendly, reasonably priced, old school, "regular guy cut" barber shop. Very convenient location and they get the job done. I was worried about going to a new place, but as soon as I arrived my fears were alleviated. I was welcomed into the shop and I took a seat.
