Really disappointed with Phil's lately, not because the haircut is mediocre at best (it's always only been a 2-star haircut...) but more so because it's become a politically charged conversation where all Phil and Cindy do is focus on complaining about how they are being targeted unfairly for some silly parking disputes. Last I checked they were a service based business that focused on cutting hair making people look/feel good. If they would focus on that, they'd do themselves a favor and maybe they'd get 3-stars. A local business like this needs to set the tone by taking the high road, adapting to the changing world around them, and make a welcome space for all their customers. I want to laugh a little and then I want the barber to shut up and cut my hair. Instead, you get an earful of negativity from these two about how they're victims, and I leave with one side being uneven and I'm stressed and frustrated. This is not the barbershop experience I knew there 10 or 15 years ago. This review written with full disapproving-dad face due to the childish nature of two formerly solid barbers. I've taken my business down the street to some better barbers in Arlington that give good haircuts and focus on the person in the chair, not griping about their own victim mentality. This place gave me the fastest haircut I've ever gotten. It really is $10 for 10 minutes or less haircut; however, you also get what you pay for. At $10 I wasnt expecting magic, but I always get a simple haircut. Skin fade on the sides and trim the overhang when I comb my hair over. Instead 2 inches were cut from the top all around, so I dont have a combover anymore and I had some loose hairs on the sides and a 2 tiered "fade." Disappointing but I had low expectations. This haircut is best for people in a rush or just need hair cut off in the shape of what you'd like. I gave it a shot because there were good reviews, but I wont be coming back. Paying twice more ($20) for a more precise haircut is worth it. read more

Best haircut in town. Fast Phil runs this barber-shop the way barbershops are supposed to be run. Theres always something going on, be it phil and his friends having a cookout (and sometimes offering some to the customers) or Phil insisting you take a few shots with him during your haircut. The place is chock full of Boston sports memorabilia, and Phil will never hesitate to bring out some of his favorite pieces and show you during the haircut. He sometimes juggles in the shop. Sometimes his friend the theraputic massager sells massages while you wait for your haircut. There really is no way to explain the place. My husband took our toddler for a hair cut. He has beautiful curls and my husband showed Phil pictures that very clearly showed a medium length hair cut with preserved curls just cleaned up a bit. Instead Phil completely cut out his curls, and gave him a short, choppy, uneven cut. When I called to speak with him about it he told me to wash my son's hair which would bring out the curls...there aren't any curls! He then offered that I bring him in to even it out...even what out? Shave him bald? While Phil may do a decent job on a basic boys short cut, he does not know how to work with curly hair on a toddler, and instead of being up front about this with the parent and telling them he can't do this kind of cut, he gives a terrible, uneven, choppy cut and gets rid of all my toddlers beautiful curls. WHY can't I give Phil 10 stars? Why must Yelp limit my ability to show my enthusiasm for this fellow and what he does? I've had a LOT of haircuts by a LOT of men and women in my 62 years but Phil is the ultimate in personality, haircuts and love for what he does, and love for his customers. If you want anything other than a super short haircut do not go here. I'm a guy and went in with medium/long middle parted hair and asked for a trim, leaving most of the length on top. I came out with, as another reviewer put it, a dumpster fire of a haircut; I had barely anything left, certainly not enough to even part. I needed them to fix it. I wasn't worried because I had a high level of confidence in them, especially after seeing some of the great reviews online. I realize now that I broke the simple rule of avoiding the places with super low prices, and they were no exception. Low-skill. Disgusting. They kept acting like the haircut was over even with massive asymmetry problems and chunks of hair hanging on all sides. I had them fix only a few things because I finally lost faith. This is as good as it gets! Kid-friendly, senior friendly,and everything in between. First time we went (me, my daughter and grandson), and yet we felt like we've all been friends forever. The guy try's to be so quick that he misses the fact that their primary job is to cut the hair right. Add the constant yapping to it, the guy barely pays attention to cutting your hair. I'm awesome. Awesome guys need awesome barbers. Like Phil. Dude knows what he's doing, charges next to nothing (some clubs charge more for a beer than he charges for a cut), and is fast as hell. If I had to complain about anything - I'd have to say that he can kinda manhandle your head at times. I mean, I get it though - when you're moving at the speed of light you sometimes can't caress your customer's heads with the learned touch of a masseuse. There is metered parking on the street. I have been here twice and my visit today sold me on this place. The Fast Phil's building is small and modestly decorated on the exterior. Once inside the shop you'll notice the shop has a surprisingly warm vibe despite its size. The walls are plastered with sport posters and photos of celebrities I have never heard of. The music on the radio was old pop from the 1950's, which made my wait more pleasant. Phil is a character, but in a good way. He is very funny cracking jokes and talking with the regulars. If somebody said the price was not part of the reason they came to Fast Phil's, they would be full of it. A good haircut for $10.00 transcends cheap, even with a tip you cannot beat the price. read more

(I'd give it a 3.5 if I could) Fast is right...I was in and out in about 10 minutes. This barbershop is a quaint, homey place...2 barber seats, one person manning the store, and tons of pictures of the Red Sox, Pats, and other miscellany. The haircut itself was decent. I got the look I was going for, and the barber put in his 2 cents as well (and gave me the option of coming back to fix it for free if I didn't like it). The lady who cut my hair, though, was really rough - I still have the neck rashes to prove it. My neck, sideburns, and ears were all red and scratched after the cut. The people here, however, made up for the rough service. The place really feels like a neighborhood shop as everyone coming in knew everyone else. The people are really friendly; finding this place is like joining a club - once you're in, you're part of the family. Going in to Phil's is like going to a little neighborhood club house. I can't talk sports to keep up with Phil, but I get a kick out of just listening. Phil is top-notch all the way. Went for my first haircut there last week, based on the strength of yelp reviews. Walking in i was a bit concerned by the 4 people in front of me (who completely filled up the place - it is really tiny), but hey, if a place called 'Fast Phil's' can't get through people quickly, who can? I was not disappointed - within a few minutes i was sitting in Phil's chair getting my ears raised. The cut was a bit shorter than i usually get, but i told him to go shorter, and its one of the best 'first' haircuts i've ever gotten. I'm not going to complain about a slightly shorter cut in the middle of the summer. If the most important thing about a barber is the haircut, the second most important part is the rapport with the customers - this is where Phil gets extra points. We conversed about everything from old music, the recent spell of beautiful weather, to what he wants to be when he grows up and how he got into cutting hair ("you always go home clean at night"). Phil makes you feel very comfortable in his chair. The person getting their hair cut before me was a toddler - Phil gets extra points for being super-accommodating as the kid basically ransacked the place and his mom apologized and attempted to keep things out of his arms reach.
