With stunning…read moreviews of greenery all around, I could almost hear the soundtrack of the Sound of Music as I scanned my eyes over the fields. The interior was intimate, cozy yet elegant, and made me feel like I was having dinner at someone's vacation home vs a restaurant that's been awarded a Michelin star. I apologize in advance in case the chance to eat the same dishes I've had will be slim to none as I gather the menu changes daily. That said, allow me to rave about some of the new bests I've had starting with the STEAK TARTARE that was so delightfully refreshing. I loved the hint of sweet mustard while the crispy oyster on the side was such a pleasant pairing. The LAMB SHOULDER was a-maaaaazing - harissa spiced and grilled to a perfect char until tender and bloody good. Served with yogurt, flatbread, and smoked cod's roe - just fab! Beautifully pink, the PORK LOIN was another winner featuring melt-in-your-mouth-delicious-meat with the rhubarb sauce sealing the deal so gloriously. There is everyone's least favorite dish which is the PIGEON, not because of how it was prepared but more on meat preference. We also had the CHILLED LOVAGE SOUP with Cornish Crab, MUSSELS w/ SMOKED PANCETTA, and PRAWN TORTELLINI - all we so very much enjoyed. I could still remember the taste of every single one of them in my mouth including the CHOCOLATE MOUSSE for dessert. Offering a pre-fixe menu as well as an a la carte menu, Pony & Trap is sure to please any food lover without breaking the bank. With a stellar service to boot, it paved the way for such a memorable evening with plenty of stories, laughter, and tears of joy shared over a fantastic spread. Easily one of my highlights on this holiday. Review #800

Another fantastic experience had at the Pony & Trap…read more I've been to the Pony & Trap a number of times. Once in a large group with friends and a number of times in a smaller group with family. Whether it's a classic Sunday roast, a cheeky weekday lunch or evening dinner it never fails to impress, it hasn't got a Michelin Star for nothing! This visit was for an early Sunday lunch with my wife and grandad as a birthday present for Grandpappy. I'd booked a while back and specifically asked for a table with good light as grandpappy's eyesight isn't quite what it use to be. The guys at the Pony & Trap were more than accommodating and gave us the best table in the house, in front of the large window at the back of the restaurant overlooking Chew Vally, it's quite a view. I usually go for the beef for the P&T Sunday roast but based on the steak meal I'd eaten the night before I thought I'd branch out and try the pork for a change, I wasn't disappointed! The pork came complete with crackling, homemade apple sauce, parsnip purée, AMAZING roasters and a selection of veg that's without a doubt some of the best I've ever had accompanying the Sunday meat! My personal fav was the roast beetroot. The pork didn't come with a Yorkshire but I had a quiet word with our waitress and she arranged for me to have one anyway. Smashing service as always. Alice and Grandpappy went for the beef and as expected the medium rare slab of prime ashdale beef was first class (I managed to pinch a taster from Alice!). It's also worth mentioning the homemade horseradish that accompanied the beef. I sometimes find that you should stick to the stuff that comes out of a pot but this stuff was amazing. It tasted so fresh and a proper nose tingler! I can't speak highly enough of the Pony & Trap. Considering the high quality of ingredients (a summary of which is included on the back of the menu, so you can see where they were sourced from), the first class service and it's shiny Michelin Star it's actually not quite as heavy on the wallet as you might expect. Highly recommended for a special occasion if you fancy venturing out of town. I can also recommend a walk round Chew Valley Lake or Folly Farm Nature Reserve after your meal to burn off your roast on a Sunday. Both are a couple of minutes drive from the pub.

As you arrive here you drive up to a car park and then walk through the walled gardens following the signs to the cafe, as you walk through the gardens you can see an abundance of wonderful plants and vegetables, its such fun trying to identify what is what, on this particular day we didn't linger too long cause it was raining. The ethos is that they make their food using ingredients that they grow themselves in the garden, for all other ingrediants, meat, dairy etc they use good local suppliers. We had booked a table which was a good job because it looked pretty full, I was pleased to see that they had the best highchairs you can get (the cheap ikea white ones), my little girl has one of these at home so I'm always pleased when a place has them (most paces do cause they are so brilliant). The menu was very interesting and had lots of very unusual things such as sweetbreads, lacto-fermented eggs and massicated strawberry salad, we of course went for the more unusual things and I must say we weren't disappointed, all of the food was amazing, I had massicated strawberry salad to start which was sharp and tangy and delicious, then I had confit duck leg as the main course which was also delicious but a little on the dry side and a sticy toffe apple pudding for desert which was moist and very tasty. Unusually we didnt go for wine but instead we went for cider, it was Crossmans cider which they sell at Crossmans farm in Hewish, we love this cider and pop into the farm to buy it whenever we are heading down south so we were really excited to see it for sale in a restaurant. Our designated driver had hop cordial which was actually really quite horrible tasting but is probably an acquired taste, I assume that they make it there. After the meal the rain had stopped and we really got to appreciate the beautiful gardens by having a lovely walk around. In a nutshell The Ethicurean is not the cheapest lunch you will get with starters at about £8 and main courses at between £17 and £22 but the quality, care, thought and effort that has obviously gone into every dish makes it worth it.

We visited the fish and chips takeaway on a mid-September Saturday night. The queue was quite long, probably a twenty-minute overall (however that is to be expected on a saturday supper time). The haddock fish supper was freshly-cooked to order - the batter was crisp and the chips were crunchy yet also fluffy inside. The oil was clearly very fresh as there was no unpleasant aftertaste whatsoever. For gourmet fish and chips the prices were as we expected. It's expensive, but not overpriced. You are clearly provided with a high-quality product and the price reflects this. Drinks are a little over-priced (£1.50 for a San Pellegrino). Service was quick and the staff were clearly focused on doing a good job of working the queue. The picnic area beside the take away was quite busy, so we enjoyed an unforgettable evening enjoying our meals in the car watching the sun go down over Chew Valley Lake. Looking forward to returning soon for a walk around the lake followed by another fish supper.

The other dish was a New York steak ciabatta (with amazing chips). We ordered wine and washed the tasty meal down before following it up with sticky toffee pudding and a decidedly evil peanut butter cheesecake (which comes in a glass). We like it here. It's grand and light, and the food is good and reasonably priced. What would we change? We would upgrade the condiments, so that the ketchup is better, and that authentic maple syrup is used on our pancakes rather than golden syrup, which is thick and doesn't taste of much. We would also have preferred our meals a bit hotter, as we felt like we had to wolf it down before it got cold. But these are small niggles that can be easily fixed, and probably will be at some point if the professionalism of the staff is anything to go by. They're friendly, not over-familiar, not too pushy, and they seem to want to go out of their way to make sure you enjoy Cosy Club. The wine list is short, but will hopefully improve in time. As of writing, it's only been open a couple of weeks. I look forward to being able to buy Champagne by the glass!
