After completing the repair they test drove my truck. Later that month I looked at my dash camera. They have deleted the video of test drive. I have a video of him twisting the camera around and deleting video. I have his face on it. Lol, I guess he didn't delete all. They got pissed cause I asked about it. He ask me if I didn't trust him. They have helped me maintain older high mileage vehicles in a professional manner, always taking time to explain what is going on with my vehicle and my options for repair. Farr Automotive is the only place in Bozeman I would take my Subaru. I brought it in in March after being told by me dealer that the CV boots needed to be replaced. Farr quoted me a cheaper price for the work than the dealer so I brought the car to them. After about an hour I got a call from the shop telling me that the CV boots were fine and no work actually needed to be done on the car. Their mechanic got under the hood with me and showed me the boots personally and I wasn't charged a dime for whatever diagnostic work they did. I've had the car back in their shop since then and I've received only professional, friendly, prompt service. Also, contrary to their Google Places entry, they do offer rides back to your house after dropping off your vehicle. read more

Wow. Maybe deep down these people are technically competent mechanics, but I'll never know. Never dealt with ruder people in my life- and I've had a dozen cars and plenty of experience with mechanics. Took a car in to get looked at and they told me "this car is a disaster, everything is falling apart, you're looking at thousands". I brought up that this contradicted a vehicle inspection report I'd recently gotten at another auto shop (different city) saying that the vehicle was in fine shape and got the response "cool". They actually just said "cool". Figured I'd try to dig deeper. "Can I talk to Nick, who looked at the car?" "There's no Nick here." "...OK can I talk to whoever it was that worked on it?" "No, but here's Francis (owner)" "Hey. I thought Nick was working on the car but I guess there's no Nick, I just have a few quick questio-" "There is a Nick. That's my son" "Oh. OK. Well should I talk with him?" "Why? He didn't work on your car." "OK...who should I be talking to?" "What do you want?" This went on and on. No, I never talked to Nick OR got answers to basic questions such as "what's wrong with the vehicle?" When my sister went to pick it up they'd charged her $230 for repairs they'd started doing that she did NOT sign off on. Don't even get me started on the process of trying to send them simple proof of purchase for a warrantied part. It got to the point where an auto parts store in Idaho had to call them. Can't make this stuff up. I hate to speculate, but they were communicating with myself and my sister and I can't help but wonder how their town would have changed if they'd been talking to a rough n' tough man instead of two women. **UPDATE Nick has marked this review as 'funny' so you can see how seriously they take their service.** read more

Great shop, great service, and honest as they come. I have a couple of older Suburbans each approaching 200k miles. Nick and the guys at Farr have performed multiple repairs and kept them running great and on the road. They're busy, but everyone else in Bozeman is too and it is also because they're good, trustworthy mechanics. With my most recent experience they went above and beyond. I was scheduled to leave town for a wedding when I broke down on I-90 between here and Livingston. Though it was late in the day and they were booked out nearly 3 weeks, Nick offered to check it out the next morning and let me know what was going on. He managed to squeeze me in, diagnose the problem, and complete the repair in time for me to attend the wedding. On top of that, they helped smooth things over with a cranky tow truck driver and also helped out with my dealings with AAA. This is a great shop and I'll never go to another! read more

My truck broke down Tuesday night before Thanksgiving (of course I was planning to travel on Thanksgiving). So Wednesday I was unable to find a mechanic that could work on my truck within a week. I called a few places, and Farr was the only place that would even look at my truck the same day to let me know how serious the problem was. So I took the trunk in at about 10 am, they promised to take a look when they could. They called back within an hour and let me know they knew what the problem was, had ordered the part from Billings, the part would arrive by 2pm, and the truck could be fixed by 5. So, the day before Thanksgiving they were able to squeeze me in and get me back on the road in the same day They literally saved Thanksgiving for me. I first went to Farr for a used car evaluation. They did an incredibly thorough evaluation and explained to me every potential issue in detail which led to me choosing a different car. Later they did a free AAA checkup for me on the car I ended up buying and they were very helpful even though they were doing the work for free. The worst costumer service that we have ever experienced. Took two weeks for a 10 minute fix. The mechanic that we worked with was nice, but very unprofessional and we would never use this business again. If I could give 0 stars I would. The lady at the front desk was one of the rudest people that I have ever met, and treated us as though we were not paying customers. They are either thieves or grossly incompetent. My daughter car overheated and she and her grandmother brought it in for repairs. They were told it would be 2300 dollars to fix as it needed a new water pump and it had a blwn head gasket. As it was a 2000 dodge it was time to scrap it. i picked up and the mechanic offered 300 for it, because he likes to tinker. Fixed it myself, new radiator cap and new thermostat, 11 dollars. read more

On two separate occasions, 6/25/2013 and 6/18/2014, after traveling from Fort Collins, CO to Bozeman to visit my son at MSU, Farr Automotive went above and beyond diagnosing and repairing my 2004 Denail when it had mechanical issues after arriving in town, even transporting me to and from the college so that I would not miss meetings... They treated me like I was a long lost friend, charged fairly for the repair of my vehicle, and never made me feel like I was being held hostage b/c I was stranded and under extreme stress. As a small business owner myself, I appreciate the integrity of quality work at a fair charge for services rendered, and that is why I can highly recommend them! read more

Update: At first, I was exceptionally disappointed with the lack of communication and frustrating customer service. The lights on my dash no longer work and the volume controls on the steering wheel are faulty as well. Francis was beyond rude over the phone and takes no responsibility for the fact that the features no longer work. I'm pretty tough on auto repair places since I've done quite a lot of my own work over the years..even built a 350 vega from parts when I was finishing college. I've used and communicated with several other shops in town and of the non-dealership ones this is highly recommended. I had an intermittent ignition module issue and both Kaiser and the main and church street shop proved that they simply don't know how to perform good diagnostics. The owner of Farr immediately told me what I already knew was the problem and agreed to fix just that instead of wasting a bunch of time trying unnecessary things. That's what I'm looking for in general. Don't charge me 150.00 to change my plug wires when I dont' request that and so on. Just do the work that needs to be done (as in the work that will cause me to break down if it doesn't get done) THEN make recommendations for things that might improve mileage etc. That's the kind of protocol all shops should follow. read more

I am not impressed. My brother bought a battery from them, and when he put it in and it didn't work, he called and was told someone would come look at it in the morning. The next afternoon, when no one had called or shown up, he called and was told that they "didn't do that" and that basically it was his problem. After moving to Bozeman from Helena, I was in the market for a new car mechanic. I FOUND MY PLACE. From start to finish, the staff were friendly and treated me with respect. While inspecting the car, they found a part that needed to be replaced. They called to let me know they found it and could install SAME DAY. When I showed up to pick up the car, they told me they couldn't get the part for what they quoted me but they honored the price they gave me anyway. Worst service ever! Front desk lady is extremely rude over the phone (incompetent at that) and in person! Called and told them exactly what was wrong with my truck, as it had been seen somewhere else but said shop couldn't repair it, and the lady tried to tell me I had all these other problems with my truck that were irrelevant to the symptoms, but I booked an appointment anyway. Had to book 4 weeks out just for them to diagnose my truck (even though I had a diagnostic from another shop). So today I take it in on my one and only weekday off a month, and they kept it for 9 HOURS without touching it. So much for an appointment right?? Completely unprofessional and I will be sure to tell everyone to steer clear from here. Drove down to keysers and they looked at my truck on the spot and scheduled a repair. Called to see if they had an appt to look at and possibly repair my car because ac/heater blower stopped working on my road trip. I was going to be in Bozeman for a week. They had no openings and the tech was not willing to take anything else on for over a week. I asked her what people do when they're traveling and need auto help (I was being serious because I have never had car issues when I'm road tripping and this was the 3rd place I called. No one could get me in for at least 2 weeks, I was 1000 miles from home, and on the verge of crying).The girl actually giggled on the phone and stated that I should be happy nothing more serious is wrong and it's just the ac. I told her I was driving for 4 hours in 102° weather w/o ac and asked her if she would like that. She told me that doesn't bother her because she's "old school and grew up w/o ac". So I asked her if she turns off the ac in her car when it's that hot and she's driving. She said yeah sometimes. I just hung up at that point. Give me a break and what a joke of customer service/professionalism. If their work reflects how they handle customers I think I dodged a huge bullet. I'd rather go to the dealership and pay out the nose than give this place a dime of my money. Take your car FARR away from this place. read more

This place has been a life-saver. When having car issues I used to go to the dealer or chain shops like Firestone, these places would usually charge crazy amounts and were usually not honest. Then I was referred to Farr years ago and have never gone back to the others. They are completely honest with the problems and will always work with you to find the best deal on repairs and tell you what you actually need to do. I came in with a list of things the dealer said I needed to do after an oil change and Farr eliminate all but one saying they were not necessary, saving me hundreds. My cars have always driven like new after being in the shop. Nick is the best there as he always treats me like family and you can tell he is not ripping you off. He calls you himself to tell you what the issue is and then walks you through what the costs are and if you cant hold off for awhile or not. Denise in the front is always great, she greats me by name when I walk in and is very helpful. She knows when an issue is important and will work to get you in right away. If its not something requiring immediate help she'll get you in as soon as possible but there are sometimes a week wait like there are at any car repair shop. Overall, a great car repair shop that doesn't make you feel bad and keeps your repairs within a budget. Have and will continue using them for every car problem. read more
