Auto Stop installed a rebuilt engine in my VW Vanagon. Within three miles of leaving the shop, the low coolant warning alarm came on. I immediately returned, but after a brief inspection I was told there was nothing wrong. When I left the shop, the warning alarm came on again. I called Auto Stop, explained that the warning had returned, and was again assured there was nothing wrong. I was told to wait and see if the alarm came on again after driving. Unfortunately, the problem persisted, and I could smell coolant burning on the hot engine. I made it home just before coolant began dripping from the vehicle. At that point, I had the van towed to another repair shop. The second shop found that the primary coolant hose from the reservoir to the engine had been installed incorrectly and was approximately 3/4 inch too short. They also discovered a second hose with a large bulge that was on the verge of rupturing. Both issues required immediate repair. What disappointed me most was not simply that mistakes were made, but that my concerns were repeatedly dismissed. After the warning alarm came on twice within minutes of leaving the shop, I expected a thorough inspection of the cooling system rather than reassurance that nothing was wrong. Because of the improper installation, I incurred more than $500 in additional repair costs, plus the cost of towing the vehicle to another shop. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Auto Stop. The quality of the installation, the lack of careful follow-up, and the poor customer service left me with significant additional expense and inconvenience. read more

Had a these guys do an inspection on a vehicle before purchasing and within two months, at my first oil change the mechanic told me that the engine was full of rust and the parts will start to disintegrate due to age and mileage. I thought I was doing my due diligence to take a used car to a mechanic for an inspection (which cost me over $200), but lesson learned to not by from third hand car dealers and that inspections don't really mean you won't end up with a lemon. I drive 100 miles each way to take my car here. I'd drive twice that if I needed to. The place is clean, the people are happy and absolutely know what they are doing. The prices fair. But here's the thing: Its easy when everything goes the way it should. Out of several visits to Auto Stop over the years, I once had an issue with my car. No problem. No hesitation. oh my gosh, pay attention to the big sign that says you will be paying an inspection fee. But.. don't assume that it is minimal. In my case it was $290 for a dead battery. Pretty amazing right? Great customer service that is as far as it went. I got charged $189 to do an oil change. When they fixed my car they didn't even fix it all the way. They said a part that they didn't fix was normal wear and tear and I had to have it fixed somewhere else. I did not get my brakes done or my calipers. They wanted to charge me $950 to get that done. Lack of communication between techs and service advisor, overcharging, failed to notice/remove/notify me of an obvious mouse nest under my engine cover during a $160 inspection, makes me question if they even checked any of my spark plugs to begin with. My daughters Honda CRV transmission went out, and we had it towed to Auto Stop. The transmission was a "england build" and it was hard to find a junk yard one and it took some time. Tyson and Randy worked their butts off finding and installing the transmission after several issues found, not their fault.They got her running again under the initial estimate. To say that I am disappointed would be a dramatic understatement. I would be giving 0 stars if it was an option. Was told at the Audi dealer I needed an engine swap, due to a burning oil issue I was having. A co worker recommended I get a second opinion from Randy (The Owner) and his team. Spoke with Randy over the phone, he said bring it down and we will take a look. After they had the vehicle for about a week I received a quote for a little over $3300+ to get the car up and going. Shortly after the repairs were complete I started getting a low oil level alarm again. So again, I take it back in and get a quote for $1400+ to do the rest of the recommended work. Now I am being told by the "Technician" that I need to do an engine swap. When I originally brought my car in it was burning about a quart a month. Nothing terrible but certainly annoying. After all the work done at Auto Stop my car is now burning 6 qts of oil in 600 f***ing miles. Not only did I pay nearly $5000 but my car is now barely drivable thanks to this team. I think the owner has the worse possible attitude of any Auto Shop owner in the history of Auto Shops. He's very entitled and a extremely condescending person. He's definitely full of himself and thinks that he's God's gift to auto mechanics in Bozeman, MT. His originality is also lacking and acts like he is the victim because his customer service is the worse on the planet. It's all good because I won't ever be returning to his under performed auto shop. The guy is definitely had for auto service professionals in the Bozeman area. If you enjoy entitled owners that look down at the every day customer then this auto shop is the place for you. I would do more shopping around before taking it to that guy. Or at least take your vehicle when he's not around. Waiting area is garbage as well. Yet it's totally expected as I look back at that place. read more

I can't say enough about these guys. While driving across the country to get to Bozeman the oil plug on my suburban started leaking. Since I was staying in a campground and couldn't do my own repair, I bought an oversized plug and took it to another shop and asked them to do an oil change and replace the plug by cutting new threads with the oversized plug. The other shop put the new plug in and ruined the threads (they used an impact wrench to put it in) and presented me with an estimate of 12 hours of work and $1350 to replace the oil pan. A little research showed the alldata estimate for that job at 5 hours, so I took the truck to Auto Stop and asked them to look at it and do the work if they could replace the oil pan in less than 6 hours. A day later I got a call that the truck was ready. When I got there they explained that they were able to drill out the old plug and install a new oversized plug. The bill was only $131, and that included another six quarts of oil. Needless to say, these guys will be getting my business when I need repair work done. read more

Once my tires were ordered I realized that I was going to be passing through on a saturday. The bill for a simple oil change today was a whopping $133.76 including 2.50 for topping off my wiper fluid. I have never paid close to that anywhere, and I don't go to the cheap "jiffy lube" type places either. The cashier said it was because I needed premium oil, but I've had the car for 5 years and never paid more than $75(for the same oil). I feel ripped off, and will never go back. read more

While on vacation ,skiing at Bridger Bowl,I was driving into the Bozeman airport, to drop off my son,to catch a flight back to Minnesota.While driving back to Bridger Bowl,my Chevy Suburban's alternator gave out.It was already 5:10 p.m. when I pulled into their shop,to see if they could test the alternator. Tyson said no problem,I'll be right out. After diagnosing a bad alternator, he had a new one there in fifteen minutes. Long story short, Mechanic Chris volunteered to stay well past closing hours to replace bad alternator with new one.I can't tell you how much that meant to me.We were leaving at 6 a.m.,the following morning on a 15 hour drive back to Minneapolis.These guys,along with the owner Randy went out of their way to really help an anxious traveler out.All six passengers made it back to work on time Thursday morning.These guys proved,that there's still a lot of great people out there! I Highly recommend Auto Stop! I was visiting Bozeman and my Subaru Outback overheated. I took it to the Subaru dealership and they quoted me $2700 and 2-3 weeks to fix it. I took it to AutoStop for a 2nd opinion. They fixed it for $200 in one day. I cannot say enough about their customer service. They explained the problem to me and went out of their way to make sure I understood what needed to be fixed. Auto stop is awesome! We have an old (30+ years) van and they have always done a great job repairing the van and giving us good advice about prioritizing repairs. We gave them a budget for our most recent repairs and they stuck to it. I had some issues with the van while out of town and they helped me figure out what was going on over the phone. Just like the other reviewer, I had a radiator issue. My fan exploded and punctured the radiator. I dealt with Dan and he was just great. Honest, trustworthy and set expectations correctly in terms of time line and what I could expect for cost. I am in the middle of restoring said Rover and will continue to bring it to them, time and time again. They've proven to me the problems they've found and done excellent work when fixing it. I was travelling through the area with my dog and I. My fuel pump went out and this is the closest place I could get to. By the time I went inside (knowing I was stranded in a town I didn't know anything about), I was crying. The men reassured me they would get it fixed first thing Monday morning and I would be back on the road. I called my mechanic to see what price I should be expecting to be charged for this service and he said no more than $300 for my type of fuel pump and labor. He said that would be a bit high though. Monday morning I went in to pay for my vehicle and my bill was $570. My fiancé called them up to complain that they overcharged me knowing my situation and that I was a female. We told them we would be giving poor reviews for this horrible service and they called us back to yell at us for saying so. They even tried to get us to come back to their shop to "discuss" this in person. This business is why I never trust mechanics. (I know there are good ones out there). I came to Auto Stop to get my AC recharged in August 2015. Seeing me as an easy target, they took advantage of the fact that I am definitely not an expert on cars beyond basic maintenance. Not only was I overcharged for this service, but the technician told me that my car was leaking oil and that they had already put 3 extra quarts in. I told them this was ridiculous, because I had changed my own oil a little over two weeks ago and checked for leaks less than a week ago. They then proceeded to give me some BS story about my oil filter not being on tight enough which was causing a slow leak that was being burned off before you could see it. So, the technician said he would tighten it on for me... which he REALLY tightened on for me. I've never had a problem with putting my filter on hand tight and I couldn't even remove my oil filter with a filter wrench. Mid oil change, I had to take my car in to another shop and have them remove it for me. The service was DEFINITELY not worth the money or the hassle it cost me, considering I only asked them to charge my AC. I would suggest taking your business elsewhere, especially if they think they can take advantage of you... because they will! read more
