The ambience of the restaurant is quite happening and the decor is fun. The food, despite generous portions and fresh ingredients, was just average, and lacked flavor. I'd say, the place is good for large corporate events, but is dissapointing to a foodie. The service was nice, location is easy to get to, and abundant parking around.

An excellent choice for a birthday dinner! There is a mix of modern and industrial decor which creates a lux dinning feel. There are plenty of options for meat eater and vegans alike! The seasonal pumpkin cheesecake was the perfect birthday dinner top off. If you're a fish fan try the scallops and calamari. Ample parking available.

It was a beautiful day outside, so of course I spent most of the time enjoying the food and drinks on the patio with friends. We shared everything. Dry Aged Pork Chop: Cooked perfectly and had a such a nice dish overall. This may have been my fav item. Lobster Roll: this looked good and was solid. It isn't the best lobster roll. I ordered a side of Brussel sprouts. I would say many more things on the menu that are better. Crab Cakes: fried crab cakes w/ remoulade. These were solid. I liked the addition of the remoulade. Grilled Salmon - This salmon was cooked really nicely and I love asparagus. I would get this again for sure! Arancini: This dish changes seasonally - they are Italian rice balls generally made with wine risotto & fried. This time they had a seafood mix which had a slight kick as well. They were really delicious. Love!! Oyster Platter: This was a shared plate with the table. It was super fun trying different oysters. The below were the ones on our platter. It changes up * Red: Madeline Point - Salty * Black- Jack Point - Mild * Green: Royal - Salty * Silver: Moshier - Briny * Blue: Norumbega - Mild * Yellow: Fin de Le Bac - Salty Desserts: Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Sandwich - cookie was a bit hard. Brownie A La Mode - this was it! Yum! Drinks: Pisco sour: Cape gooseberry, lemon balm syrup, raspberry infused St. Germain, Pisco Brandy, Bison Grass Vodka, & lemon. Shrub Gin & Tonic : Mirco borage blossoms, citrus microgreens, lavender, sipsmith lemon drizzle gin, & fevertree tonic. Absolutely loved the cocktails.

I believe the suburbs have great places to eat - I really do. I think we can get away from the drudgery of chain restaurants without having to drive 30 minutes away. But Farmer And The Fishmonger have a long way to go before meeting that caliber of dining experience. Let me start with the good. The interior was very cool - industrial, large, open, and lively. It looked beautiful and just a really nice space to be in. And the happy hour specials? Fantastic. 241 pours on wine and beer from 4-5p, half price oysters? I won't lie, that was what incentivized me to come, and I might just come back for that. But that's about all the good that Farmer and The Fishmonger has to offer. While the oyster selection was fairly good and it's rotating so there's plenty of variety, the actual dishes had a lot to be desired. My friend ordered the lobster roll, and I ordered the shrimp roll, both with jojos (a potato wedge, essentially) for our sides. The potatoes were actually well seasoned and pretty damn tasty, but the actual rolls...had a lot to be desired. The lobster was not properly deshelled for my friend, and she found multiple pieces of shell still stuck on her lobster. The shrimp roll was okay, but the shrimp itself were fairly tiny and flavor-wise, it tasted like it was just smothered with bland mayonnaise. And portion wise, for $22-$28, the roll itself was tiny. Farmer and The Fishmonger has the potential to be a real gem in the south metro, with an innovative cocktail menu and the promise of fresh seafood. However, this experience didn't showcase any of that potential, and left me with a disappointing dining experience.

We had a wonderful time at Farmer and the Fishmonger. We love the ambiance with the leather seats and large bar and bar area seating. We had the pleasure of meeting Justin who was our bartender for the evening and what a treat that was! Justin was well versed in the menu and in spirits and cocktails as a whole. He made us two cocktails from the menu and we challenged him to make us something weird and delicious that wasn't on the menu and he absolutely delivered. The calamari was delicious and it wasn't too rubbery or sandy - the sauces it came with were sublime. We loved the mussels - they were very plump and not gritty as some mussels can be. The porchetta sandwich was different but flavorful and I was a big fan of the house made chips for the side. A huge thank you to Justin for delicious drinks and great company. I can't wait to go back!

Seafood Boil - pretty spicy

I meant to write this review a while ago but a big thanks to Yelp for reminding me about this dining experience. First of all, I was a little worried about dining in Apple Valley after seeing some of the reviews, granted Farmer and the Fishmonger had only been open about a month after my siblings and I decided to visit. Pictures of the food on Yelp looked OK to good but some of the reviews had me worried about service, especially with the labor issues others in the industry have been facing and 2021 was the year of the "great resignation". Suffice to say, one of the things that impressed me the most about FATF was our server - she was great - friendly and very attentive (gold star!). Now on to the other parts of the experience ... again, let's be clear, this is Apple Valley versus North Loop or Uptown but the prices don't reflect the location. I'm not saying the south metro can't have a nice, cool, hip place to eat but it's a MUCH different place to go and the prices are almost a premium to comparable Minneapolis or St. Paul restaurants ($38 for a lobster roll?!!) When I first arrived, parking wasn't a problem because there's a big surface lot that's shared with another restaurant. The bar was packed because it was the tail end of happy hour and from what I've seen, the happy hour prices are actually pretty reasonable, plus the drinks are good! That's another interesting part of the FATF experience - the drink menu is very good with unique, craft cocktails and the G&T was served in a gauntlet. Again, the prices match the quality of the drinks and it reminded me of prices at Parlour or the Hewing versus having to cross the river heading south on Hwy. 77. As for the food, it was good, well most of it. I recommend the crab cakes as a starter - two large patties with a lot of lump crab meat. They aren't very dense like Oceanaire's crab cakes but it's still a good portion. We also ordered the shrimp toast and while there were a lot of shrimp that were seasoned nicely, it was a pretty boring dish - literally, toasted grilled bread (think baguette's) with shrimp on top. My sister ordered the Cioppino, which was perfectly fine, but my brother and I both noticed the broth looked pretty basic and you couldn't really tell there was much tomato in the broth. My younger brother ordered the lobster roll, which looked good but again for $38, that's a steep premium to Smack Shack's lobster roll for $28. I will say FATF's lobster roll is a larger portion but still hard to justify the price, IMHO. My other brother has always been a standard type of person and I knew he would order the bacon wrapped meatloaf which comes with mashed potatoes. Suffice to say, I wouldn't have ordered it and I think he was regretting it when we left because it was dry and not very good. I was torn between the fried seafood platter and the seafood boil. Ultimately my better senses kicked in and I decided not to overload on grease and oil so I got the seafood boil which was very good and a large portion. I think this was the clear winner of the night and I see value for $34 since you get crab legs (very hard to crack since it's smothered in creole butter and other spicy seasonings), shrimp, mussels, corn on the cob, andouille sausage and potatoes. I was only able to eat about half of my meal so I had leftovers the next day (or two). I will say the seafood boil's seasoning is spicy and I think most Minnesota palate's would find it over seasoned and too hot. We also ordered some accoutrements - popovers and cheddar biscuits. The popovers were a little overcooked but the biscuits were very good and the cry baby honey that came with them were money! Overall, it was nice to dine with my siblings again and I especially liked trying a new restaurant outside of the city. The drinks were a highlight and some of the seafood dishes were good but be prepared to pay for it! That said, I'd be willing to go back especially for happy hour!

Daisy - kind of like a hybrid margarita

I was invited last Friday night (uh get that song out of my head now) to the Farmer and the Fishmonger to participate in their soft launch. This new place is owned by the same people who own the restaurant across the parking lot (Mezcalito Butcher) and other concepts (Bourbon Butcher, Italian Butcher, etc.) located across the south metro. Now living in the Midwest I will never pass by an opportunity to get a chance to enjoy fresh seafood, especially from the coasts. So I was excited to try a new concept, especially since this one promised to focus on great seafood and great cocktails. Fishmonger's menu offers two different paths to take - the farmer will be more Midwest fare focusing on classic steakhouse offerings while the fishmonger is your seafood side with a little bit of southern hospitality mixed in. First impressions walking in - this place raises farmhouse chic to an 11 (any Spinal Tap people out there?). Reclaimed wood, black piping, old fashioned light bulbs that glow a warm gold - this place really takes this newfound love of refurbishment and makes it lux and welcoming. It was pretty cool that our chairs were old artist/work chairs, something like you would find in a factory or something. The other thing that catches the eye right away as you walk in is their spectacular two level bar. Yes, the barkeeps actually have to use a ladder to access some of the bottles at the top, it is that big! It reminded me of a rich person's old-timey library but instead of books it was filled with bottles of booze. As a proud home bar owner, I was blown away - this is the bar I wished I had at home! Speaking of the bar, lets go right into the drinks. The menu has lots of the common staples of a trendy bar (think Manhattan, Old Fashioned, Mojito, Daiquiri, Paloma, etc.) but done with the commitment of this place - farm to table. That means fresh juice, no mixes, and a keen attention to detail. The salts are smoked, the fruit garnish is marinated, the juices have been infused. It is a really neat place to try a classic and see how they put a spin on it. We tried a drink that was reminiscent of a margarita (but made with mezcal, rosemary, and black pepper) and it was very good. Now on to the food. My wife and I are seafood lovers so of course we went the fishmonger route. I picked the Fried Fish Platter (a mix of fish, shrimp, and oysters) while my wife chose the Bacon Wrapped Scallops. My dish was great. I always order fried fish if I am feeling it when I dine out because it is such a pain to make correctly at home. The batter was a classic beer batter that complimented the fish and shrimp. The shrimp (or should I say prawns, seriously I could have just eaten a platter of those) were huge and the piece of fish was a nice, meaty portion of whitefish. Both were so good dipped in that rich beer batter. Finally, the oysters were covered in a cornmeal batter that worked because it prevented the oyster from getting slimy when cooked. The dish came with a side of homemade jojos (thick cut french fries) and homemade remoulade sauce and cocktail sauce (some of the best cocktail sauce I have had in my life, fresh and fiery, so good). Compared to something that you can maybe get at Red Lobster for maybe only $6-7 cheaper, there is no argument. It would be like choosing to eat at McDonalds instead of Manny's. Yes, this place is a little more expensive than other restaurants in the area, but the quality of the food is exceptionally better. The portions are also very filling which makes the price point well received by me. And hey, fresh, high-quality seafood isn't cheap to begin with anyways. My wife's scallops were done well and came with a side of corn succotash. It was a very healthy and light dish that paired well with my heavier choice so we shared bites from each to balance. We also tried a side of their crunchy brussel sprouts. They were so good, they made brussel sprouts appealing (of course they were loaded with bacon and an awesome honey Dijon mustard sauce to help but who are we to judge?). So final remarks. The level of quality and attention to detail the food and drink exhibited really lives up to the standards of a great farm to table restaurant concept. I am always wary when visiting these places because "farm to table" can be a really gray area. You might find one item on your plate that qualifies but it still qualifies as such. At the Farmer and the Fishmonger, that is not the case. You will be hard-pressed to find items that have been processed or that are not made in-house. There is a lot of care and creativity that goes into each dish and drink and you can tell. The people who work here are proud of their food, passionate about what they do, and it makes every bite and sip that much better.

Teriyaki Salmon

I feel we ordered the wrong thing. I thought we were being bold by ordering the Teriyaki Salmon with snap peas on a sweet potato mash. It sounded great, but did not taste as great together. I felt the flavors were battling and I enjoyed them better separately than together. I would try something else next time. The service was good.

This was seafood chowder to go, yes those are potato chips, and was a little blah.

So, I was so excited to try this place, it's new and fresh and they serve oysters!!! We had party of 12, so I think they were overwhelmed. Service was lacking and we had to remind waitress a few times about things she had forgotten about. The food was good, but it's on the spendy side. Atmosphere was on point!! When all said n done, we will be back.

Tuna noodle hot dish, creole scallops, and Brussels sprouts
Ali D.

My husband and I dined here for the first time, and we had an overall great experience. The cocktails tasted great, the only issue I had with my gin and tonic was the garnish. There were little pieces of something that kept getting stuck in my teeth. We got oysters and the crab cake for apps, both were really good. He got the scallops and I got the tuna noodle hot dish. The tuna was incredible, a big seared rare tuna steak on top a veg of well seasoned noodles, pea purée, and topped with salt and vinegar chips - highly recommend! The scallops were delicious, but the garnish was just ok, a little bland. The service was amazing, I wish I could remember her name. The biggest issue we had was with our table. We were sat at a small two top that was so close to other tables on either side that we all kept bumping into each other. I'm 6 feet tall and my husband is 6'6, so we were very cramped. It looks like they have some good looking specials for happy hour that we can't wait to come back for. They have really good value for what you get. I was happily surprised to see good portion sizes, great tasting food, and decent prices here. We will definitely be back!

Steak Frites

Great service, good ambiance and great seafood near us! The new menu doesn't list as many seafood offerings as before (only fish offered was salmon) but crab boil was good and spicy!

After 10 minutes no one had come to the table... 15 minutes... still no one. No water, drinks or their complimentary chips. They weren't overly busy, so this didn't make sense to us. At minute 20 I got up to talk to a manger. The waitress saw me go up to the front and tried to wave me down to say "I got you." I'm sorry but 20 minutes in a restaurant that isn't packed is ridiculous. At the very least she could have brought water and said she would be with us soon, but she never acknowledged we were there. I spoke with the manager and noted that it had been 20 minutes with no one coming to our table. I told him i understood she had other tables but that we just hadn't even been acknowledged. He said "she doesn't have that many tables! Let's go!" He took our order on the spot! He brought us complimentary guacamole and horchata with our chips! That was a very nice gesture! I assured him we weren't out for freebies, we just wanted to order our food. He was very friendly and definitely took care of us! Our food came out very quickly and we were checked on multiple times. He definitely turned what was a very negative experience around! The vibes here are really great! The patio was so nice! It was well maintained and clean! The food: I got the pulpo (octopus) tacos! They had a tropical and buttery flavor to them! I opted to take the picked onion off mine but I'm sure that's tasty as well! The chips had a nice crisp and saltiness to them and the salad was one of the best complimentary ones we have tried! My boyfriend had the chicken fajitas and noted they were tasty with a solid portion. The horchata here is also pretty solid! Overall, this place is worth the try! Tip: don't get the dessert at the restaurant, grab it to go from the bodega! It's about $4-$5 cheaper!

The whole ambience and vibe of the restaurant is really nice. Granted, we were the only people there at the time, but it's still a really cozy and relaxing atmosphere in my opinion. The waitress that helped us was more than kind as well. Very nice, great service. The only thing I wish they would've asked is if we wanted the bill split, they just brought it to both of us. I was with my sister so we had to split it later. We didn't want to inconvenience them so we just paid the full bill. The BBQ pork bun was absolutely amazing. For only $5.50, I would recommend getting it as an appetizer. It's a fairly decent size too so you could split it with at least one other person. Or, you could have the whole thing to yourself!!! I'll probably get one just for me next time. I liked the chicken satay skewers. Those are really good. But, I was expecting more than just two small chicken skewers for the cost. Really good flavor though. Then we got sushi rolls. They were all fantastic. I remember I got the Ooka Roll. It's the most expensive role on the menu, but it's fantastic. I think we also got the 150th roll. Also fantastic. Overall, I really recommend this place if you want some sushi. Just be prepared to pay a lot of money. If you need a cheaper option, there are other sushi places that are a bit cheaper close by. But these guys are very good and I will be back. I would rate 4.5 out of 5 stars, but Yelp only lets me do full stars - so I'm bumping it up to a 5. I'm excited to try their hibachi when we go back, and more sushi.

Good thing I like straight whiskey I guess. The Cajun Bourbon pasta was good, but I wouldn't venture to say great. It was overly creamy and just didn't pack any spice that you'd expect to be associated with Cajun. Overall it just lacked a richness in flavor.
