Back at fantasy Island with Ernest another great meal and the prices are right
Ernest S.

Once a week I have to go and get my fixed. Their food does not have sodium glutamate. As far as I know when I leave here I don't feel like I can drink a reservoir through a garden house so that's good for me cause I usually get a big thirst and I'll try almost everything on their menu. I'm a big fan of their egg foo young chicken egg foo young that is and I'm a big fan of their lo mein, chicken, lo mein and I also like boneless spareribs my wife likes their chicken finger my wife likes the chicken fingers and I like the crab Rangoon and the dumplings pork dumplings. That is I'm getting hungry I gotta.

Spareribs on the bone were elite
Gary G.

First visit after hearing about their excellence at old school Chinese. East parking. Oddly a little divey looking from the sign and the exterior, but a modern, respectable interior without any tiki decor. Went with apps, entrees, and a combination plate to get just the right amounts. Okay, more than the right amounts. Spareribs on the Bone: Elite. Among the top 5 I've had within the last five years, with all the bases covered. Red glazy finish, ample but not overdone to the point where you wonder if they're hiding anything. Nice char, and not overdone to the point where anyone could accuse them of being burnt. Very meaty. Very tender. Most importantly, great flavor, from outside and in. Cross-sections extremely juicy. Fresh tasting. Can't wait have them again. Egg Rolls: Excellent rendition, with no special features, but every aspect was well done: good size, very crisp exterior, very moist interior, with more cabbage than celery, and more pork than most other places. Teriyaki: Not elite but very, very good. Thin, but with thick teriyaki tenderness. Elite on tenderness, actually; just a little light (but not lacking) on flavor. I'd still get them again. Maybe the early visit (hit them on opening) meant less marinade time. Wings: Very crisp. Very juicy. Not much flavor. Pork Fried Rice: Tried on a combo, this was good, with some of that dark old school flavor but more of a sticky rice texture. Gigantic chunks of roast pork. Somewhat mushy. Potentially elite; gotta try one more time. A full order of the subgum pork fried rice had all the same qualities plus extra vegetables. Sweet and Sour Chicken: Very good. The chicken fingers were all crisp with good batter, but meat-to-batter ratio varied. Pineapples and cherries abundant. Unique clear sweet sauce. Deep flavor with both sweet and sour. "Fantasteak": Surprisingly good surprise item, ordered as one of the appetizers on the sweet-and-sour chicken combination plate to minimize the commitment. Basically steak tips done teriyaki style. Very, very, very good. Will be a full order next time. Good crust outside, tender and pink inside. Just like the sticks, they were just a little light on flavor but not lacking. Can't wait to have more. Pork Egg Foo Yong: Okay. Nothing special. Not as tender as most. Decent enough gravy. Very reasonable prices. Very friendly service. Felt like home.

Egg roll, Chicken Fingers, Boneless ribs and pork fried rice.

The service was great and our server was amazing. The ambiance was a little bar feeling with lots of wood tables which I liked. Now let's get to the food.. Pork buns: the pork was cooked perfectly and the bun was nice and soft. The sauce went well everything and it's a great starter dish. Spicy Kimchi Ramen- this consists of pork belly, pickled mushrooms, kimchi and fried garlic. The ramen was really good and had a lot of flavor with just the right amount of spice from the kimchi. Perfect for a cold day! Colonel Sanders Ramen- this had a pork broth with fried chicken and was delicious and moist. Also had corn with Vermont butter which you can taste through the bowl. This dish was the highlight for me and I'll definitely be back again. If you're in Salem, MA and are craving ramen then be sure to give this place a try.

However, the food itself wasn't spectacularly special for me to grant the fifth star. There was a good amount of fat on the pork belly, and I wasn't really a fan of the wavy noodles. It's like cheap noodles in what should be a premium dish. The flavored sodas (N/A alternatives) were a great find and a decent value on the menu. Service was friendly and quick, we stopped by with no reservations on a weekday and got seated. All in all, would be back for appetizers.

We ordered: chicken lo mein - not bad but a bit crunchy teriyaki burger - this came with chips. It wasn't bad but it wasn't something I'd order twice. teriyaki chicken dumplings - DELICIOUS! Spareribs - ohhh mmmm geeee so good! Bangkok beef - this was good but it was very heavily breaded with very little meat. Would not order again. I'll be back, I'll just stick to the foods I ordered the first time + the teriyaki chicken dumplings

We ordered 4 small plates and only enjoyed 2 of them. We got the cucumber salad, blue crab rangoon, sticky ribs, and pork/shrimp gyoza. The cucumber salad looked kind of old in my opinion, like it had been sitting in the sauce for a while, and was overly salty. The pork/shrimp gyoza were somehow flavorless, and the sauce was watery. The crab rangoon were delicious though and the ribs were as well. My espresso martini (their Cocolee drink) was also a little bland and I wouldn't order it again. Overall enjoyed less than half my meal. The workers were all very kind. And the vibes are really nice, we sat outdoors and I love the patio. If they can improve on some of the dishes, this could be a go-to spot!

Lots of nooks and crannies, including an L-shaped bar, before you get to the main dining room. VERY lengthy menu comprising at least four Asian cuisines. My wife and I tried 10 dishes over two visits. -- Scallion Pancake: My wife chose this. Not exactly blazing new ground, but light, crispy, more scallion flavor than most, and ginger dipping sauce darker, thicker, clingier, and tastier than most. Above average. -- Cold Noodles with Sesame Sauce: Gotta mix this all up to get all the flavors distributed. Thin noodles, softer than most, and mildly spicy sauce saucier than most-- meaning it somewhat overpowered the noodles textually. Taste wise, no problem. Average. -- Singapore Chow Mei Fun Noodles with Tofu: This is my wife's dish and her domain. She's pretty particular about how she wants her noodles, and she was pleased that this rendition was neither too wet nor too sweet. Thumbs up from her. I tried a small bite and agreed. Above average. -- Biang Biang Noodles with Spicy Cumin Lamb: My favorite dish of the day and a pleasure both taste wise and texture wise. Long, thick noodles that felt homemade, not too sticky, not impossible to break, and nice wiggle. Not particularly spicy in the hot pepper way, but very spicy in the flavor way, with the cumin, as well as complementary vegetables. I've had this dish in a bunch of places and I gotta say this was the freshest I've ever had the lamb. Just enough liquid to make it work while letting the noodles and lamb shine. Well above average. Some heat would bring it over the top. -- Fish Filets in Sichuan Hot Chili Broth: Standard dish, solid execution with no surprises. Very tender fish, perhaps a little fuller if cut than most and a bit less spicy than most. Average, but not a bad average-- this dish is usually good and so was this rendition. -- Honey Spareribs: The second visit started with a dud here, as the ribs looked and felt very old. Honey glaze with odd cinnamony notes couldn't hide the dryness. I sent them back and they took them off the bill. -- Cucumber and Fungus in Vinegar Sauce: A cool, refreshing dish with the cukes well marinated but still crisp to the bite. -- Mini Pork Buns: Small (grape-sized) balls of pork surrounded by bao dough, steamed and lightly fried, served with a sweetened soy sauce. Not bad, not remarkable. --Sautéed String Beans: Thin, moist, cooked through but still retaining snap, slightly blackened in a good way, and accented with salty fermented bits. Very nicely done, though not spicy as billed. -- Ma Po Tofu without Meat: Soft, silky tofu and a smooth, mildly spicy sauce without any bits and pieces to add interest. Good flavor but a little one-note. Good service. You don't often get full service, never mind good service, at a hand pulled noodle joint, so this was a pleasant surprise. The interpretations of classic dishes were different enough that I can see some naysayers, but I mostly liked mostly everything, with the first visit very strong and the second a bit of a drop off. Very good value, as the volume of servings was higher than most and the pricing was lower than most. HUGE menu. Some might say too huge, too ambitious, and I agree. But as long as the execution is there in a few key dishes-- like the biang biang noodles I'll mostly stick to--I'm happy. My wife likes it, so there'll be more visits.

When the food was delivered, there was little to no direction on operating the table burners. The buttons are hard to see as they're down low on front of table near the abdomen area. While assembling my soup, my broth boiled over and leaked through the burner onto the floor and my pant leg. Later I asked if I could switch my broth flavor because I didn't care for the mushroom broth and was told no by our server, but overheard another server tell her customer that they could switch broth. My second visit was my Daughter's choice for her 21st birthday dinner. I did not like my first experience with the soup and ordered a couple of small plates as my meal.
