When I was younger, this shopping strip at the corner of Dan Jones Road and U.S. 36 was one of the…read morevery few strips around this area. Yes, that means I'm old. However, I was feeling a bit nostalgic during this past weekend's trip to Putnam County and decided to stop and really check this retail strip out. I spied The Fudge kettle and knew I had to stop. The Fudge Kettle was started in 2020 - what a time to start a new business, eh? Despite the challenges, it thrived in a different location before locating to this spot in 2023. This is a former Jack's Donuts and it reportedly offered The Fudge Kettle about twice the size of its previous spot along with a variety of other perks. In case the name isn't obvious, The Fudge Kettle specializes in candy, fudge, local crafts, and a variety of other products. Despite being an older strip center, accessibility is pretty strong here with ample parking and curb cuts. The double-sided glass doors are pretty manageable. I found the interior to be nicely designed. I'm a fan of fudge and definitely had to try the fudge while here. Absolutely a delight. You can also get chocolates, freeze-dried candies, and some national brands like Pez, Necco Wafers, Buns, Boston Baked Beans, Rock Candy, Candy Cigarettes (Yes, I'm old enough to also remember when candy cigarettes were considered cool), and more. Local crafts include candles, keychains, t-shirts, wreaths and more. I'm a huge candle fan and I definitely prefer supporting local. So, this is a great find. I will note that new owners took over - I believe in 2023. It seems like there's some shifting going on and the website indicates that new products are coming soon. However, I liked what I saw here and the employee I dealt with was friendly and helpful. I found the prices to be fair, the quality to be amazing, and this just feels like a really welcoming spot. This shopping strip is a little more off the road than most. You really have to look to see The Fudge Kettle, however, it's definitely worth looking for and making a quick stop. Will I return? Absolutely.

I liked the front display that features Indiana based products, mostly chocolate. I saw DeBrands, Wolf's and a few others that were new to me. The shop also carries a wall of colorful jellied candies and beans that sell by the ounce. I saw a shelf of vintage candies including Neccos. People came in quickly and picked something up and checked out. Not me. I studied each candy carefully and looked at ingredients before finally selecting some Abbott's Dark Chocolate Abbott's is made in South Bend, Indiana. I like to support the home team. She went back to see if she could get change and her receipt, or pay with a card and get the cash back - because there is absolutely no way that a half pound of candy cost $20 - and she refused and said sorry we are closed. (the hours are until 8:00 and it was 7:30) I believe that the employee just pocketed the cash and did not enter the purchase into the register.

The Licorice Guy seems to be the local presence of a national company company. They specialize in handcrafted, premium licorice - these are not Twizzlers and you will taste the difference. More expensive? Definitely. However, for licorice connoisseurs I'd definitely consider them worth the splurge. The licorice is made in small batches with no wax, fillers, and less sugar. There's traditional red, traditional black, cinnamon, blue raspberry, green apple, watermelon, and root beer. They also have some other options. They are not gluten-free (they use wheat). They do ship. They have fundraising options. I tend to be a fan of the traditional black. They do have flavors that are seasonal (including chocolate). I definitely wouldn't call myself a connoisseur, however, after seeing them at Statehouse Market more than once I finally had to splurge. This was one of the more unique offerings at Statehouse Market this year and I sure hope they'll be back next season. I believe the Central Indiana rep may be based in Avon, however, I'm not certain. They were friendly, the licorice is great, the prices are fair, and this was one of the better discoveries during this year's market season. If you see them, I'd definitely check them out.

Six foot cables are available as well. Cable colors here are white, black, and blue. Depending on the location, some of their stores honor replacing non working cables free of charge. Regardless, their cables are good quality and last a long time with reasonable care. I buy all my cables here exclusively. There are both self check out stations and cashier stations at this location. A friendly employee was eager to check me out which is what I prefer over a self check kiosk that I'm not familiar with. These stores also have treasures as we call them. Unique stuff to buy you don't find everywhere and its of a better quality in my opinion, than the three different dollar store chains. I wish they would open one in Martinsville. Other areas they stock good inventory for are fashion accessories, pets, gifts, and toys. I bought a cat bed today that I have not been able to find in my usual pet shopping places. They also have a great candy section with items not commonly stocked elsewhere. I bought a box of Whoppers today. They have a lot of retro candy as well. Parking is more than plentiful in the giant lot for this sprawling shopping center.
