We went looking for Fangas Mercearia Bar, but it was closed. There was a sign leading us down to the bigger of the two restaurants, Fangas Maior, which was literally three or four stores down.
This is more of a 3.5 rating, but I'll give it four because I can't really say anything negative about the place.
We started with a super bock beer, which I'm obsessed with. For a light beer, it's pretty flavorful and enjoyable. I did eye the sangria for a bit, but decided to stick with something I knew would be good. I saw the table next to us with the pitcher, though, and it looked so refreshing.
For dishes, my travel partner and I ordered the mushrooms stuffed with sausage and almonds. The sausage was more of a shredded meat a la tuna salad. Overall, the dish was very earthy. It was unexpected, but in a nice way.
The second dish we had was the duck with fog and beets. The duck wasn't very tender, but it wasn't horribly dry either. The sauce helped a lot, and it especially helped because the sauce was pretty delicious. The fog and beer complemented the meat perfectly. It's not the medium-rare finish that you'd be used to with a nicely prepared duck, but honestly I found myself nearly licking the plate after, so I'd say I very much enjoyed our order.
The two dishes were plenty for the two of us. We weren't overly stuffed nor left hungry, which is the exact state you need to be in in order to walk the hills of Coimbra. I would recommend it to those passing through this quaint town. read more
