Goat, red wine
Alexis N.

Wow, absolutely incredible meal here. My husband and I came for lunch today and ordered the goat, the rice + beans with pork, and red wine. We ate SO MUCH (because it was so delicious) that we had to take a nap after. It was £25 for all of that (including a bottle of water) and we ordered the small food dishes! I will see that goat forever in my dreams. I wish I could eat it everyday. Note: cash only!

Full plate of charcoal cooked fish and sides

An absolute MUST If you find yourself in the city Extremely small and intimate place, amazing vibe inside, and the portions were outstanding for the price. Traditional and authentic, such so they do not have an English menu. I say again: They do not have an English menu so travellers beware but do not worry! Google translate helped and Mario is a fantastic man that will answer your questions. You really can't go wrong with anything there, I highly HIGHLY recommend the full fish and the authentic Goat meal. We stumbled upon it randomly scrolling through Google, showed up 1hr before opening to "see where it was" and there was already a line up.

Very authentic place. It is a kitchen with 7 tiny tables. You feel the heat from the ovens. Their portions are generous, simple and affordable. We loved the place. If you want to get the table for dinner you have to show up 20-30 minutes ahead of opening hours.

Yes, that's the way to the restaurant. People are queuing outside because it's totally worth it.

Very small restaurant in a very small street. Very basic interior (wooden stools), but exceptionally friendly and helpful staff and very good traditional food from the charcoal grill. (Not the right place for vegetarians.) Yes, there's a menu, but you probably can't read this handwritten wonder. Just ask for a recommendation (The grilled octopus was very good, the pork also. Garlic, btw.) and get some of the house wine. A very, very good meal in very special restaurant. You too should go there, but probably not in larger groups. (4 or 6 people seemed to be the maximum at the tables.)

I had high hopes for this place based on all the reviews I had read. Sadly this place did not meet expectations. We got there about 20 minutes before opening and there were already 7 people ahead of us. The place is very small maybe 7 tables but we were able to get seated shortly after opening. Because the place is so small they have to orient the square tables like a diamond and the seats are small stools. My husband has a bad back so he has to have either have a chair with a back or at the very least be able to have his back lean up against the wall for some support. Anyway after we got seated at a corner table the owner left so I thought I would just move the table a little bit so he can have his back up to the wall. The table next to us was only 2 people so it really wouldn't have bothered them. So the owner starts yelling at me right away that I can't do that to which I calmly explained the situation. He really didn't even let me speak just kept saying I can't. When he finally realized why he did shift the table a bit. So on to the food. We ordered a half order of both the ossos (pork bones) and feijoada (pork and bean stew). The pork bones were pretty good. They reminded me of when my mom makes broth with large pork bones and the stew was just so-so. After we were done eating I asked the owner for the bill He said ok and promptly walked out of the restaurant for 15 minutes!! Another couple nearby also was done eating and just stood up and waited by the cash register for 10 minutes waiting for him to come back. It really boggles my mind at all the rave reviews for this place. There's no way I would wait over an hour (like some reviewers) to eat here. The food is nothing special and the service is abysmal. The worse meal I've had in Portugal so far this week.

The tables were fully set. Red and white wines were there. We had choices of lunch items. The pureed vegetable cream soup had a wonderful flavor. Before our entrees a classical guitarist, a lute guitarist and a vocalist performed, wearing the black student capes of the university. Such a treat!! My entree was shredded codfish with creamy potatoes and chopped salad. Delicious. Dessert was ice cream with fruit. Recommend for large groups. I have not had a regular dinner here.

We were then serenaded by coimbra fado musicians. It was a lovely lunch and although I had no choice in where to go, this restaurant really served great food and the service was excellent. There were a handful of people not associated with the tour also dining here for lunch. Dining with a whole lot of tourists does not seem ideal in my book, but the good news is that this restaurant has a few back rooms that offer a little separation from the main dining room. We started with a puréed vegetable soup. I couldn't tell you what was in it other than it was a bright yellow/orange color. It tasted delicious though. We also had some bread and garlic(?) butter. Also good. I chose the fish. It was like a tuna casserole but sooooo much better. It didn't taste too fishy. The sauce was like a light cream sauce and the top layer was nice and crisp. It came with a small side salad. As we were working on our entrees, the waitstaff came by to ask us if we wanted another helping. It was a lot of food already, but several people asked for seconds because it tasted so good!! For desert, we had fruit salad with a scoop of ice cream and coffee. Everything tasted great. The service was excellent. The waitstaff was quick and attentive. This multiple course lunch was served so efficiently. I was surprised that even though it seemed stressful, the waitstaff all served us with smiles on their faces. Finally, I liked the decor and use of natural light. I didn't really understand the library/book connection, only that it was a cool restraint atmosphere!

We have been coming to Batista for several years during our multiple trips to Portugal every year…read more We live in the United States. A reservation was made for 6 people, my cousin was visiting Portugal from Boston. I mentioned to the service manager our desire for my cousins to have a great experience at Batista, similar to what we've experienced over the years! The quality of the Cod is the best, grilled to perfection always!!! You will enjoy your Cod I guarantee you! However, the service was the worst we experienced and expected!!! Literally waited 10 minutes to get waiters attention and he kept ignoring us. We know this is August, service goes down just about everywhere in Portugal as August accounts for busiest month. Besides unexpectedly bad service, the portions were not equitable as what other tables were served! This was true of several tables we saw around us. The service manager brought us another portion of Cod which I refused several times. My comments were aimed at improving this great restaurant, unfortunately my experience was awful with service, rushed, brushed off -- this takes away the 5 stars I would give Batista. In closing, Batista in August may need to be avoided or reconsider a different place, I certainly will do that going forward!

This secret spot is definitely where the locals eat. Greeting us was a nice aroma of grill, wine, and garlic. The large dining room was packed with a boisterous lunch crowd who were really enjoying themselves. The ambiance was plain, and clean, the fare is authentic, and the staff fantastic and accommodating. We were a bit overwhelmed by the fullness and merriment of the dining room and being Covid adverse asked if we could have an outside table. They wouldn't have us sit outside on a cold windy day and led us to a sparsely populated back dining room, which felt more intimate and safe. The place is family run, sister, uncle, brother, grandparents; they work here. They love food. They love people. You can feel it in the air. You had the sense that even the crowd in the dining room were extended family. Traditional hospitality since 1972 we were told. The food is good basic Portuguese and lots of it. Wonderful fish grilled over an enormous BBQ was what we chose. They don't skimp on portions. Be very hungry if you visit. You'll need the room. Come as strangers, leave as family. Highly recommended.

So book yourself dinner in a fabulous place like O Convite with excellent service but a super noisy (full of kids) dining room. We started with the tuna and sardine pate and I recommend you do the same and if you are gluten free they will give you a GF baguette. I devoured that little dish and could have eaten just that all night. For my main, I had the octopus which was beautifully presented and melt in your mouth tender. The green beans on the side were bland. My mom had the seafood rice which was good. A fun surprise is the cheese pudding with olive oil ice cream. Gluten free but delicious. Try it! Especially the pate.
