    Delicious octopus and fruit jam
    Nathan G.

Just amazing... A really cool small plates type place, very stylish and sharp design surrounding you as you feast on: Mushrooms and beans - the best dish we had, so simple but amazing flavor. Not to be missed. Very homey. Cod and chickpeas - evidently, they won some kind of award for this. Subtle, tightly presented. Delicious. Octopus and fruit jam: sounds like a strange combo but it works well. Octopus was subtly flavored, toothsome but not chewy like it's supposed to be. A must if you like octopus. Cheese tart with mint: small but intense flavor. Great way to start a meal. Roasted apples in moscael: a nice desert, not too sweet. The server was great, he suggested a delicious Portuguese white wine and the cod dish. English spoken by the staff fluently and with pleasure. Coffee was good, too (as with everywhere in Portugal). And... 59 Euros out the door for all of the above. What a deal! Not to be missed if visiting Coimbra.

I believe the chef is sending us a signal that he is ready for us to leave.

Me and two others stopped in here on a rainy afternoon. The hours on the door said that they were closing at 1530 but the hostess told us it was 1500 and despite is being 1415 they would still seat us. We told her that we would just find another place since we didn't want to run up against their closing time (as we were the only ones there) but she insisted that it wouldn't be a problem. As many others have posted, the food was excellent, the wine the hostess selected for us was perfect, and her service was fine. Absolutely no problems with any of those things. So why the 2-stars? Well, for one, when we told the woman of our friend's severe shellfish allergy, while she thanked us I saw the chef roll his eyes. Perhaps anaphylactic shock isn't a big deal to him, but I assure you it is to his customers. Then later while we were enjoying our various plates the chef took the opportunity to lay his head down in the food service window in clear view of our table to make sure we got the message that we were making him stay later than he wanted to. We took the hint and it was as we went to pay that we learned of the "cash only" policy. As another reviewer wrote, at the price of a dinner for two or more they should really consider taking cards. Some may think that I am rating them too harshly, but when you are paying this much for a meal you shouldn't be made to feel like you are putting them out to actually sit and enjoy the food they made. It wasn't like we were just hanging out, we were still eating the food that was served. And the chef's eye roll at the mention of a patron's severe allergy concern is unprofessional at best. Good food only goes so far. The attitude of the chef was absolutely off-putting and I would hesitate to recommend Fangas because of that. There are just too many other places to eat in that area.

Nicely perched enclave on a small, lightly trafficked alleyway. We took an aggressive approach to the menu, over ordering, so we could explore the menu a bit more. We were started with a small plate of house made tuna salad and toast points. A fine start. When asking the server for wine, she has strong opinions and I feel I may have insulted her when I was not overwhelmed. It was fine, but a jubilant attitude previously expressed went somewhat dry.... The sausage and cheese starter.... this is a meal in and of itself! The blood sausage has a nice cumin note and none of the mineral tang of lesser links. The chorizo with wine has nice depth and smoke. The bread and chicken was by far the least of them. Surely by design the texture was wet stuffing with a very mild flavor. The cheeses were a delicious exploration of soft mild through to a sharper goat. From here to a duck breast with beets and fig. They say it only has these, port, salt and pepper. I feel the depth of flavor must have more something more, but excellent either way. Let them keep their secret ingredient. Mackerel puff pastry... was as expected. Warmed through with a tinned mackerel in the center along with cabbage and ham. We ordered poorly for the last dish. A specialty here, fresh cod filet, is standard fare for back home. Over a somewhat plain and dry bed of bean purée, it was nothing spectacular, but simply as expected. Recommendation, nice environment with what started out friendly staff. The food was very good, excellent technique, but not mind blowing. Take it for what it is. A nice restaurant perched on a quaint alley with good fare.
