I reallyyyy wanted to like this place more than I did. The positives- the space itself was beautiful. It's a great place for a date or dinner with a group of friends. The negatives- we went in around 5pm on a Sunday. They were not full by any means but said we needed to switch tables and go to a different area if we wanted to order any of the happy hour specials which was just weird. Cool ambiance, friendly and attentive service. Space is large and dimly lit, separate bar area on the mezzanine. There is also a large bar downstairs, large cocktails menu. Drinks were tasty but very light on alcohol. I had the espresso martini and the spicy Paloma. My friend had the passion fruit cocktail which was tasty if you prefer something tart. For dinner we shared the ceviche which was our favorite thing, very fresh and tasty, the roasted lamb flatbread which was just ok, very dry, and the Halloumi Fries which are pretty much just fried cheese sticks which came with a yummy curry ketchup. We started with croquetas which were so good we didn't get a pic. Our waiter also brought us tartare to try. I'm not typically a fan, but it was pretty tasty. I ordered the short rib pasta -- MAN! It was a huge helping which I was not expecting, hello leftovers. It was pretty good, obviously the short rib is the star of this dish. Many people have complaints about this place. I don't disagree with some of those complaints. It's busy, crowded. My service was a little abrupt and aloof, but I wasn't neglected. Yes, a lot of people come here for the instagrammable aspect (it's hard to get a good photo to be honest). It was loud. This is not the spot you wanna go to have intimate conversation. But I loved the food and drinks. I had the delectable croquetas, made from bacon, dates, manchego, with tartar aioli. Light, a gentle crunch on the outside, soft and gooey, hot inside. Fantastic savory flavor. I then had the rib eye at the recommendation of the server. I have had a lot of steak, of all cuts and styles. I hate getting a fatty steak. This steak wasn't fatty exactly, but had more than I am used to tolerating. But somehow, this steak was so sumptuous. A perfect medium rare, great flavor, and that fat just added to the taste and texture. added to the roasted potatoes, grilled broccolini, black garlic, and mustard jus, this dish was worth every penny of 65 dollars. The drinks were refreshing and tasty. I had: Sabrosa: pierde almas mezcal, pineapple cinnamon syrup, ancho reyes verde, lime, sal de gusano rim. It was savory and spicy, smoky and peppery. Vaoyageur Passionne: haku vodka, boiron passion fruit puree, St. Germain liqueur, lemon, apérol. Fruity and floral, but not too sweet. Si mamacita: El tesoro blanco, select aperitivo, chamomile cordial, grapefruit, fresh citrus, agave, aquafaba, rosemary. The aquafaba wasn't overpowering (I hate it when drinks are too foamy). It was clean, tart. They have several small plates: burrata (when will this trend pass?), foie gras (when will THIS trend pass?!), meatballs, prawns, and more. They have a mezze platter, with fandi bread, hummus, baba ghanoush, muhammara, and pickled veggies. Mains include: cauliflower steak, gnocchi and lamb bolognese, salmon, branzino for two, short rib pappardelle, and as I said, that sexy, voluptuous rib eye. They also have a selection of pizza. I didn't even get to look at desert because my server brought me the check without asking if I wanted anything else. It wasn't close to closing, at least what was posted online. It was a Friday, my reservation was at 9 PM. Closing was 1 AM, unless online was incorrect. I had even asked my server if I was keeping him from getting cut, and he said no, to enjoy my food. Despite that abruptness, the manager stopped by to check on me and told me a story about how she enjoyed that rib eye late one night after a long day of work. She was very personable and I'm glad she was the last person there that I spoke with, wrapping things up pleasantly. I don't know that I would take the trek back to Brooklyn for this spot again. There are places with more personality, food that's just as good or better, with people who really want you there. But definitely worth trying at least once. read more

We decided to celebrate our friend's birthday here on a Friday evening. We made a reservation for 6pm and there were not much people, but after 7pm it started getting busy. People were waiting when we were about to leave. It's a very beautiful place filled with greenery. I loved how they tranformed this place. Very colorful and lot's of plants. Our server was very attentive, always checking on us. We were celebrating our friend birthday,so literally every worker there wished her a happy birthday which was very nice of them. For food we ordered a margarita pizza, croquetas, mezze patter and rib eye. Mezze patter for us 3 was a lot. They provide you with some protion or pita bread and lot's of humus and babagoush and i forgot the name of the red one. I am usually not a fan of humus because it is very dry, but this place it was really good. If you are a small party then just order like one dipping. Steak was great and the fries too. I'd like to start by saying the Croquetas were truly excellent. However, the overall experience left much to be desired. The music was extremely loud, making it difficult to hold a conversation at our table. Service was mediocre at best--our waiter only approached us to deliver water (once), take our order, and drop off the food. We ordered drinks that never arrived, and had to reorder them. When they did arrive, the espresso martini was one of the worst I've had. The food overall was disappointing: the fries were severely overcooked and lacked seasoning, and the rest of the dishes were largely unremarkable. Given the quality, the cost felt completely unjustified. To make matters worse, an automatic gratuity was added to our bill even though our group was smaller than six people. I don't typically write reviews, but I feel it's important to share my experience. I'm giving this place two stars primarily because our server, Emily, was exceptionally kind and attentive. Also, the ambiance of the restaurant was beautiful and aesthetically pleasing. However, I did have some concerns during our visit. Because a wedding would be taking place shortly after we arrived (which we were not informed of when we reserved), the staff and atmosphere made us feel a bit rushed, and some of the other staff members were not welcoming. For instance, one employee bumped into my partner without offering an apology, which felt a bit discourteous. As for the food, we ordered deviled eggs, which were decent but nothing special. My partner chose the Rosti, which turned out to be just potatoes with sour cream. I ordered the chicken skewer, but unfortunately, it arrived undercooked, leading me to send it back. I wasn't even offered an apology or a comp on the bill. On a brighter note, we truly enjoyed the drinks, which were a highlight of our meal. I stopped by here for an afternoon snack with a few friends on a Sunday. It was relatively slow so we were seated immediately. The service was friendly and the wait staff were very attentive. As far as food goes, we weren't too hungry so we settled on an order of the burrata, the handcut fries, and a charcuterie plate. We also tried a few of their drinks, including their white wine, beer, and sabrosa. I was a fan of the sabrosa as I felt like I could taste the quality of the ingredients used. The food came out quickly, and while delicious, there was nothing too memorable about the charcuterie plate nor the burrata. Both were good but nothing too special. The fries were actually very tasty, however I wish they used longer pieces since most of them were less than 3" in length. I recall being here on a Friday or Saturday night and they had a DJ playing house music on the upper level which was pretty cool. As far as atmosphere goes, I think this place is very unique and well worth showing off to your friends. 5/5 ambiance. For the food, I would give it a 4/5. The best part about this place was the vibe and how fast the food came out. The low light was awesome and overall just nicely decorated. However, as fast as the food came out, our server was honestly pretty rude. He never even introduced himself just walked up to us and said "drinks?" Then, never asked us if we wanted another round, and I don't think he ever asked us if we were happy with our meal either. The worst part is that they were 1000% trying to push us out. The table bussers were obsessive with trying to take our plates from us asking us over and over again if we were done while we were clearly still eating. I get that it's a busy restaurant but we hadn't been there longer than an hour. I got the lamb chops and asked how they normally come, the waiter said medium to medium well. I honestly don't know a single Mediterranean place that would recommend that, the same way a steakhouse wouldn't recommend your filet well done. However, I decided to trust him and said medium was fine. I regretted it, it was definitely overcooked for my liking. I will say my friend got the half-chicken and it was unbelievably good. I celebrated my 27th birthday here on a Saturday night and it was sooo much fun! I highly recommend coming here with a group for any occasion. First off, the cocktails are delicious! The croquetas and the pizzas are a must. You can actually see them making the pizzas in an area which is pretty neat. I feel like you can do without the mezze platter as they don't really give you enough pita (probably my only critique). One thing to keep in mind if you're going with a group that everything is easily shareable and tapas style buttt you can also still remain hungry so I would recommend ordering a few tapas and maybe still having a burger as your main. Friday 7:30pm The place is as beautiful and full of energy as the last time I came here with a smaller group. This time , there were 7 of us and it was the perfect place and atmosphere for a large group. The space is large and open ( it has two floors, I've only sat down on the first close to the stage where the band plays) , nicely decorated with beautiful colors and textures ( furnitures , arts on the wall) . Unfortunately by the time we left at 10, there's no live music ( not sure if there is one and if so , what time ). Regardless we had a nice, enjoyed the delicious drinks and the very shareable dishes . The staff were all very nice, however, some minor setbacks were the 3rd set of drinks were a bit delayed and they forgot our fries and was charged for two items that they never came. Our server took care of it and was apologetic ( love the way she handled the situation and her positive aura ). A place that I would definitely come back to work a group for fun friends . Was so excited to visit this picturesque restaurant after reading so many positive reviews. Our experience here, however, was underwhelming The ambiance was nice, but nowhere near as nice as the reviews made me imagine. Super casual space, despite all the greenery. People were dressed in flip flops and tank tops. Customers come here for Instagram, but besides that elusive mirage of a chic oasis, there's not much to this restaurant. The noise level gets super loud, once the place packs. Tables are situated close to each other, to squeeze in as many customers as possible. Prepare to participate in your neighbors' conversations. The AC wasn't working, so only the fans on the ceilings circulated stifling CO2. Our waitress was wonderfully accommodating and courteous. The hostess, was very exhausted and looked like she needed a long vacation from nonstop customer interaction fatigue. Get here early--at 5:30pm on a Saturday, you can still have your pick of a table where to dine. At 7pm, everything becomes packed to capacity. Definitely need reservations for busy peak times like weekends. Food was brought out quickly. The food menu is small--this is mostly a place to enjoy drinks and appetizers. Only four entres offered--and one of them was unavailable when we were dining. The not cheap $18 Paloma drink was good--no complaints there. The highlight was the $13 croquettas--definitely get this appetizer! Three tiny balls were bursting with flavor at every bite. I could eat these nonstop all day long. $24 steak tartare was underwhelming, at best. The mayo tasted old, giving the meat a funky flavor and after taste. Skip. $24 burger was of Macdonald's quality. We were speechless. Two super thin, pre-frozen, fast food Patties were slapped on a bun with zero sauce and that was our $24 restaurant burger. Needless to say, such burger was devoid of any taste of texture. Fries came out cooked unevenly--some were burnt, some were undercooked. Overall, for the prices and food quality, this is a one visit is enough kind of establishment. You can definitely find better all over Brooklyn and Manhattan. read more

I've been hitting up a lot of "must go" and trendy spots this summer and unfortunately, I've been repeatedly underwhelmed and disappointed. We can add Fandi Mata to the list of "bleh" spots. By no means am I a super hard to please, extraordinarily picky diner, or food snob, though it seems NYC is being flooded with new spots that prioritize the vibe over the culinary experience. Call me crazy, but I'm actually interested in well prepared and tasty food. Picturesque? Yes. Influencer worthy, of course. But I shouldn't want or need to dine elsewhere after the meal. For what's it worth, our server, Dajana, and the hostesses were absolutely lovely and super accommodating. They were the bright point of a mediocre experience. Besides that, the food was bland, uninspired and portions were abysmal. I wasn't even inspired to snap any photos of the food. Wasn't worth the space on my already full iPhone. Visit to say you went, to take photos (it's a stunning space) and perhaps to enjoy a cocktail. Hopefully the experience of others are better than mine. read more

Went for restaurant week. We were seated at high top tables (no reservation but no wait) upstairs, which was a nice view. Came with two friends, who each got pizza for the main course and I got the pasta. They got the salad and burrata appetizers and I got the meatballs. Their appetizers came out first, which was fine because they were cold appetizers. However, we were waiting for at least ten minutes and flagged down a waiter to ask about the meatball appetizer. He said that the meatball was in a different kitchen, which is why they didn't come out at the same time (?). A little odd, but sure, we were fine with that. Eventually the meatballs came and they were quite yummy honestly. Then the same thing happened with the main course where my friends got their pizzas again at least ten minutes before the pasta came out (we again asked a different waiter, who also explained that the pizza vs the pasta were coming from two different kitchens). A bit strange, and at this point I was slightly disgruntled but thought it was just unfortunate timing (maybe it was just my unlucky day). Third time must be the charm, because our desserts all came out at the same time. However, we paid a price (and maybe they did it to spite us) because the gelato was a puddle (see picture--which I took right after it was served) and the chocolate cake was only the slightest bit warm at the center (wouldn't have even realized it was supposed to be hot). The icing on the cake was my friend finding a piece of plastic in the panna cotta. It was only at that point that we considered it time to tell the waiter. I have never complained about service before and try to be patient and understanding. When we told the waiter everything that had happened, he just said, "okay, I'll see what I can do." We see him go downstairs and start gesturing with the manager, who eventually comes up and has a very bizarre (could be interpreted as rude) interaction. He starts off with, "So I hear you've been arguing with the wait staff." Which we were surprised by, because there hadn't been any confrontation at all--we only asked about each course after waiting an appropriate amount of time, we did so politely, and when we asked, there was no confrontation/angry words on either end. Even when pointing out the plastic, we explained the situation, not even yelling, just stating what had gone on throughout the meal. The manager "joked" that we waited too long to eat the gelato, which hit a nerve given that I had literal photo evidence of the state it arrived in. He then said that his job as manager was to cause tension (?), then offered to comp our desserts, apologized for the plastic and said that was not acceptable, and offered us a round of shots (but again, with sassy undertones). He also explained that they had 150 guests to manage, although admitting that wasn't an excuse. The only time he sounded sincerely apologetic (and he never explicitly apologized) was when addressing the plastic situation, and the rest felt like he was just trying to smooth it over because "the customer is always right" and thought that we just wanted free stuff. They made us wait again (at this point the main floor was quite empty, so perhaps they were really just trying to continue with their momentum of the night--or lack thereof) to bring the check. Instead of comping the desserts (which I would assume would've been $15 each based off the $45 pre fixe price for three courses) they said they couldn't do it for some reason and covered the bottle of wine that was $30 as an add-on on the pre fixe menu. We did not stick around for the shots, nor did we want them in the first place, nor did they offer to get them (and if they had, I'm sure they would've spit in it). Ultimately disappointing experience because the first time my friend went, she didn't have these problems. Perhaps tonight was truly just a bad, crazy night, but either way, this treatment was honestly quite rude and unwarranted given the way we presented our complaints (and the reasonable nature of them). In terms of food quality, I quite enjoyed the meatballs and pasta (very fresh), but the pizza was not worth it (soggy because it was such a thin crust), and neither were the desserts. read more

Brunching in this Hidden Oasis!! This is one spot that I HAVE to revisit at night. It's a beautiful Mediterranean inspired restaurant with tons of natural lighting, and surrounded by greenery and mood lighting. It literally feels like you're sitting on a patio in another country and not in the middle of Brooklyn on this cold, wintry day and it's amazing how they can transport you as soon as you walk through the door. Staying on theme, their hand crafted drinks were gorgeous and well balanced and every one of us loved our brunch entrees which were tasty but not too heavy. I loved how you can tell that everything was made with fresh ingredients, especially my Arugula pizza. We did stay for a while so it was nice to see how the space transformed as the sun started to set and like I said previously... I definitely want to come back at night. Love the vibe of the restaurant with the music playing, dim lights, and tall plants everywhere. Beautiful decor. For drinks, i got a glass of rose. My friend ordered a mock tail and was charged the full price of an alcoholic drink! Now onto the food... The food wasn't bad, but nothing stood out to me. We tried several dishes including the dip appetizer (we asked for more bread and ended up paying $9 for more bread!!), broccolini, shrimps, and a pizza to share. Overall, i really enjoyed the shrimps given they had a kick to it but everything else was a bit plain. Nothing too memorable. I came here on a Saturday night with a group of girlfriends. I had this restaurant flagged for a long time and was very excited to come. Unfortunately, the experience was mixed. Positives: - Beautiful venue/decor - The food was good - Great wine and drink selection Negatives: - The food was INCREDIBLY expensive: $15 for half an heirloom tomato, $69 for branzino - The service was RUSHED. There seemed to be no shortage of servers and they were constantly, aggressively clearing our plates. They told us we had to be out within two hours and you could tell the waitstaff was trained to turn and burn. - The communication: the servers didn't bring an appetizer we ordered, I ordered my heirloom tomato salad without pita due to being gluten-free and it came out with pita, then they took it back and brought it back out with crackers. When I asked if the crackers were gluten-free, they said they didn't know. They also took a very long time to send out an order of chicken skewers. - The timing: the food was not coursed and some entrees came out first, appetizers came out last, or never arrived. I'm adding a 3rd star because the Manager must have sensed that there were a few hiccups at our table (we didn't complain proactively) and offered us a round of drinks to make up for it. He explained that he was new and asked for feedback, which we provided in a constructive manner. I really wanted to like this place, but I feel they have too many kinks to work out and there are too many other places flagged on my map to justify my return. 99% of the people who come here, come for the decor. Don't pretend you're different. Even the Amish would download Instagram on their parchment paper just to 'gram this place. The gorgeous plant bonanza interior is by far the best thing about Fandi Mata, but the food isn't too shabby. Try the Haloumi Fries for upscale mozzarella sticks, the Shakshuka for poached egg and tomato glory that actually has a spice kick, and the Roasted Lamb Flatbread for a taste of Turkey. For drinks, the Grass is Greener is surprisingly strong enough to knock you into a palm tree if you have one too many. Honestly, the worst thing about this place is that Sunday brunch is so insanely busy. We waited about 20 min for our server to even stop by. He was wonderful, so I'm not saying this to get him in trouble--just to show how stretched he probably was. As far as natural aesthetic and vibes go, this place is one of the best. The inside of Fandi Mata is beautiful filled with tons of plants and exquisite architecture. It really feels like a tropical oasis in the city. The food quality is just as good as the vibes. We ordered the brunch pizza, French toast and shakshuka- all of which were incredible. The sauce in the shakshuka was particularly tasty and full of flavor. I also had the best espresso martini of my life here. Unfortunately I did have to remove a star because we were told we would have 90 minutes at our table but the host kicked us out after 60 minutes which was unacceptable. They should have communicated that before seating us at the very least. read more

I give Fandi Mata 3 stars for the ambiance, drinks, and service but the food was not great to say the least. This place has been on my bucket list for a while and I was so excited when my sister suggested this place. Sadly that excitement didn't last past the drinks. I say if you go sit by the bar and enjoy yourself there. read more

It was very bold of the team behind Fandi Mata to open a restaurant during the winter of January 2021, before vaccines were widely available and when many folks-- myself included-- were avoiding dining indoors. Despite many factors working against them, they thrived. One thing that propelled Fandi Mata to some social media fame and buzz worthiness is their large and beautifully decorated outdoor pergola. It was covered, heated, and made cozy with throw pillows and brightly tiled table tops. A perfect setting to escape the chill during our [first] pandemic winter and has carried them through today. For a while it was difficult to get a reservation, indoors or outdoors as they were packed every night, so I was stoked when my friend told me she snagged a reservation for dinner. It's now a cliche in Brooklyn to turn a former warehouse into a restaurant, but the interior decorator for Fandi Mata deserves extra praise for turning the space into the most gorgeous jungle I've ever been with. There's greenery everywhere and the huge light fixtures and tall trees bring your gaze up to the skylights on the roof. When you enter the restaurant you're immediately greeted by cozy and brightly colored furniture, rattan everything, and a bright blue tiled staircase leading to the second floor. Did I mention this place is enormous? You can't help but look around in awe. Because it had a slightly clubby feel, I was skeptical of the food. The menu is largely Mediterranean, with mezzes, skewers, and salads dominating the menu. But sections dedicated to pizza, burgers, and more modern American fare made it feel less focused and added to my skepticism. I was mostly pleasantly surprised by everything we had. I enjoyed the tuna tartare, which came with crispy pieces of pita bread, a burrata pizza, the pappardelle, and roasted fingerling potatoes. The cocktails were also nicely made, though I would really hope so at this price point. I don't think any of the dishes were particularly remarkable or would imprint in my memory but nothing was a flop. I'd bring a group for a special occasion when you want to take lots of photos. For that, Fandi Mata is perfect. read more
