I thought Fan Tang was ok. It was decent but on a slightly more expensive side than I thought. The place was quiet when I stopped by, so it was nice to have some peace while dining there. I had coffee chicken, because it was the thing I kept hearing people talk about. To be honest, I probably wouldn't order t again. It was way too sweet for my taste. I remembered I couldn't really finish it...because the taste just wasnte for me. We love Fan Tang and love that they have a second location now! We have been in several times to the new location. Service has been great friendly and fast. Food is delicious and the Szechuan green beans is my favorite! This location does only have indoor seating and is a little smaller than their other location, so it does fill up fast! Have been wanting to this place for a while now. Started with the chicken lettuce wraps. Had the Firecracker dumplings that were very tasty but not very warm. The spring rolls were very good and the dipping sauce was awesome. We did a large wonton soup which was really good but was only lukewarm which is an issue for me. It's more like a 3.5. The food is alright, the service is fast, and the prices fair. Small private lot with some parking available. Everyone rants and raves about the coffee chicken. It's seasoned chicken. It doesn't actually have coffee flavor. It's good, but it's not "amazing". The dishes taste like they are missing something. Maybe some MSG? Idk. There's a flavor I'm used to with Asian cuisine and something always tastes like it's missing. I can't put my finger on it. I like that this place is an Asian fusion restaurant so they mix flavors and dishes from a variety of cuisines. So again, the food is good. I wouldn't say "great" or "amazing". If you're not used to Asian food, then I think this is a great place to try first. It's a starter pack as an introduction to a variety of Asian cuisine. I popped into Fan Tang with my family after our girl's day outing for a bite to eat. I hadn't had Asian food in a minute so I was happy to have the chance. My cousin had previously been to this restaurant a handful of times so she had some good recommendations. I ultimately ended up ordering the Sichuan Green Beans with fried rice. I wasn't crazy about the black beans on the dish but they happily subbed them out for mushrooms instead for me. I thought the dish was very tasty and had a mild amount of heat. The friend rice was so-so and an up-charge. Despite the larger size of the dish, I was able to take one for the team and finish it all! I was really pleased when Fan Tang opened in the Heights. It brought a very consistent performer closer to home. I admit, I don't think Fan Tang is for everyone. It's not fine dining, but it's not fast food, but you sort of get both experiences here. For example, you order your food at the counter. They bring it to you, but that's about it for service. But the restaurant is clean and nicely adorned. It's nice, and it sort of feels like you'd have a server. But you don't, so don't expect one. The food is good and consistently so. I haven't found anything that jumps out at me, but everything has been solid. Kung Pao Chicken? Good. Coffee Chicken? Solid. Szechwan Green Beans? Tasty. Like I said, it's all good with solid portions, but I can't say anything is simply amazing. They are remarkably consistent. I like going her for a good lunch or a filling dinner. I was driving down Montgomery when I discovered Fang Tang had a new location. Of course you know I had to check it out. I just love the nob hill one. Ironically I'm rarely in nob hill these days. The vibe is so chill. The staff is very friendly. I'm a creature of habit. Once I find something I like somewhere well it's usually what I stick to. My go to here is the delicious pot stickers accompanied by the delicious chicken fried rice. That rice is sooo goood! The chicken is perfectly juicy. I'm so glad to see this location kept the same delicious flavor. It goes without saying if you've never tried this place you gotta hit it up at least once. Everything is always fresh and super tasty. For a party of four we wanted to try a something different. So we stopped in at Fang Tang. We got our menus and seated quickly but had to order back at the register. We didn't have a waitress. So we ordered 5 dishes and a soup. I had a bowl of egg drop soup, coffee chicken, Pork lo mein, Chicken General tangs ,Beef sichuan green bean , and Jade shrimp . Overall we liked chicken general tang, coffee chicken, and pork lo mein. The beef Sichuan green bean was pretty salty. Now the jade shrimp we had a hard time with. The brown rice was not appetizing and of course we did not care for the mushrooms. The egg drop soup was great with tofu! I only took two pics at the beginning when we got the first two dishes so I don't have the remaining. I was out of water mid service and we never were checked on until at the end of service. That is probably why they only looked like servers and bussers. So next time we might just have to order out. Definitely a fried rice dish. We were seated in a corner table of what used to be an old Blake's lotaburger establishment and right away we noticed the table. Service took awhile but overall we would probably order take out next time. The restaurant was nice and service was fair. Alrighty, been in a few times now to sample everything. I'm a huge fan. From the appetizer menu, I highly recommend the firecracker dumplings (spicy awesomeness), and the lettuce wraps. As for main course dishes, I've tried the coconut curry, Mongolian beef, coffee chicken, thai basil, and general tangs. Not one disappointed meal. Service has some kinks but overall is good. Everyone's been friendly and quick with drink refills. Heads up, this place is almost always slammed with people everywhere. I am so excited to have a Fan Tang on my side of town. I've always loved the Nob Hill location and spent a lot of time there in college, but I will probably be spending more time at this new location because it's close to me now. This is definitely an interesting use for an old Blake's. From the outside, you can totally tell but once you go inside, there is nothing left that says this used to be a fast food burger place. I found the food to be in line with the original location. I've always been a huge fan of the cashew chicken and that's what I got. We went during a busy time and service was fast. So excited about the new location! We are regulars at the Nob Hill location and have been awaiting this opening. Same menu, today we witnessed the same great service from staff. I absolutely love the food at Fan Tang. I highly recommend the Coffee Chicken. It takes nothing like coffee, but somehow it turns this chicken into a sweet and spicy scrumptious deliciousness that everyone should try at least once. The atmosphere is a chill vibe. You pay up front when you order and then they bring out your food later. My son loves this place too. He is 11 and enjoyed the Low Mein with tofu. The owner was also there and he was super friendly. The restaurant is very strange. They give you a menu, tell you to go sit down and then one must go back to the register to order and pay and then go sit down again. The egg drop soup is more like a vegetable soup...all kinds of vegetables in it including tomatoes!! Salty and strange. They don't offer sweet and sour sauce. We asked for some and they brought a watery chili sauce. My friend ordered beef lo mein and the noodles were soaked in soy sauce, very salty. My shrimp dish was ok. FanTang used to be so good. My husband and I have so many great memories here, and were reminiscing as we waited for our food last night. Sadly, we've now had our last ever dinner here. My husband always lets the cashier know of his cashew allergy and it has never ever been an issue. This time he let her know and she said "well you're brave to eat here". It was concerning, but we experienced no issues with this. Our food came out and we were both pretty disappointed. The coffee chicken no longer comes with the little noodle salad and it's a smaller portion of chicken. FanTang also used to have the absolute best tofu dishes ever, and this time I was met with a smoky tasting super firm tofu straight from a package chopped up onto my plate. I hated it. I barely touched my food, and although no one came by to ask us about the food, I stopped the server and told him that I didn't like the tofu at all and expressed our overall disappointment. He offered no resolution or empathy for us, but simply said "yeah, the owner changes the recipes all the time". That was it. I took a handful of fortune cookies to eat in the car because I was still hungry. I truly miss when FanTang would make their spring rolls and not use premade frozen ones too. Those were awesome. So sad. There's nothing else like what FanTang used to be. I'm not sure why the owner decided to stop doing the things that made it great. Maybe it's a new owner, I have no idea but that's what it seems like. It's truly no better than any other 2-star Chinese restaurant in town anymore. read more

I had seen the rave reviews of this place and its location on Central which seemed to always be crowded, but somehow I had never made it. I was super excited when they opened a location in the heights and had to give it a try. I did carry out, so I can't fully review the entire experience. I ordered ahead and did pickup which was super easy and quick. It was interesting that they didn't seem to have menus at the counter in the restaurant, I guess you can order carryout from the kiosk? I'm not sure. So, I will have to give eating in a try and then can update my review! The place is a bit small so I could imagine it could get crowded. It wasn't when I was there. Tuesday evening 6:30. Cost for 2 meals, one drink and tip: $34.00 Here is the good, the bad and the ugly. The good: I had the sweet and sour chicken with white rice. The chicken was lightly breaded and tender. The vegetables were nice and crunchy except for the pea pods. But that's ok, it was expected. Portions were not enormous but plenty enough to have leftovers. The bad: the place is so loud I could barely hear my partner across the table. The cashier wasn't overly friendly and I would say he was rather brisk. Not a great start as he also "greets" customers. The ugly: my SO ordered the Mongolian chicken with noodles instead of rice. Had it been my dish I would not have eaten it. It was so salty I considered it inedible. My dear SO never sends food back. He will just eat it even though he doesn't like it. Ok. If I ordered something I just didn't like the flavor I would probably not send it back but when food is so salty it takes your breath away that is not my mistake of ordering an unfamiliar flavor that I just don't happen to like. If it is too salty then it is the cooking and not my picky taste buds. He left the noodles and he likes noodles. He ate the chicken but left the veggies. My SO never comments on the food unless he likes it but if I see a problem I will say something. I mentioned to the server how salty the plate was and he suggested we ask for low sodium soy sauce next time. So it's our fault for not knowing they oversalt their food, that the cook didn't cook the recipe properly or that the recipe is flawed to begin with?! A good recipe, even using regular soy salt, will not be that salty. I guess I'm a little salty after that interaction. Anyway, IF we go back we will not be ordering Mongolian again. This is not my favorite place, it just is near to us and quick food. I'll look for someplace else. The food is ok but considering the "bad" and the "ugly" I'm not sure we need to return. read more

When we saw a fan tang coming to our side of town we were SOOO stoked!!!! I've tried to give this place several fair chances because we always loved the central location. Unfortunately, this one just isn't the same. The foods not the same and service can be bad to depending who you get, but the first visit was some of the worst service I've ever had.....We love the Sesame chicken from central location....Something about it wasn't right on our 2nd visit here.... On our last visit, the fried rice was sooo bad! I was honestly shocked it came from that kitchen. It was a really off color, had no taste, and almost zero veggies in it either. Really really bad! We got the general tangs chicken. It was okay. But I wouldn't get it again. The beef rolls were great as they always are. The crab wontons were also very good! Our first try here they messed up and lost the order, and then were super rude when I asked about like I did something wrong....I got charged, so I know they got it..... They also didn't cancel that order or refund us like we were told..... I was told to talk to Jason but that never happened. He did call me back once but never a 2nd time after some phone tag. The service on my first visit was horrendous from the guy up front. Rude and acted like us coming in was a hassle for him.....quit your Job if doing it is an inconvenience to you.....the service in my last trip was good though. The person bringing food out and refilling drinks was busting their butt! It seems like they could use an extra employee here. I will not be back to the Montgomery location again. It's definitely seen the last of my money. Overall in 3 visits its been mediocre at very best. Central location we had been disappointed one time in probably 30+ visits over many years! Montgomery location has been a disappointment on some level every single time. I can't recommend the central location enough. But I would recommend not going to the Montgomery location and finding somewhere else nearby, or take the drive to central. read more

We decided to try Fan Tang for dinner one evening on our way home from the furniture store down the street. They were pretty busy, but had a table for two, so we were seated very quickly. The menu items cover a range of different dishes, but we were interested in checking out their meals. We each ordered tea (he ordered green tea and I ordered Jasmine). The teas arrived quickly, but we were not hurried, as they only take food orders at the concierge desk. My partner went up to order once I decided to get the Pad Thai, as I was in the mood for noodles. He ordered spicy shrimp with rice. The food arrived pretty quickly after we ordered, so I expect they were really good at keeping up with their orders to that when an order came into the kitchen, it could be prepared right away. My review of my dish (I ordered it with pork to be traditional): The noodles themselves were overcooked and very, very soft. I'm the kind of person who likes soft noodles (no al dente for me, thanks), but even so, they were almost too soft, if that's a thing... The sauce was very tasty, and the pork was sliced into small strips so they cooked quickly and evenly. The vegetables were good, too. I could tell from the color of his broccoli that the kitchen knew how to cook broccoli without turning it into grey mush. Overall, we were quite pleased with our meal. The only thing was that it wasn't long before the tea became bitter because it had oversteeped. I'm not sure how a restaurant can change that, so I didn't think it should impact their score. It was a tasty, filling meal at a reasonable price. Hard to beat that, really. read more

The easy part - appetizer Beef Rolls: filled with beef & served with a peanut wasabi sauce. The sauce was good, a little disappointed it didn't have more punch. Entrees were Mongolian Beef & Brown Rice for me and Chicken Coconut Curry for the wife. There was a decent size portion thick cut and tender beef, it wasn't overloaded with onions. Almost no heat, if you want hotter make it so. The Curry was different. Instead of a soupy concoction served in a bowl, this was more a thicker, pastier dish. Comes out plated next to the rice. Tasty and heat was the upper end of mild. Food was great, service was excellent. My drink was kept full. Another addition to the return list. read more

We 2 came here for lunch on a Friday around 2:00. The cashier welcomed us and suggested we pick our table, look over the menu and someone would take our drink order. I had a glass of wine ( reasonbly priced) and he had a soda($3.19 not reasonably priced). I went back to Shayla(the cashier) and ordered. We got spring rolls, hot and sour soup and the Mongolian entree with shrimp and white rice. The meal came on a timely basis by a server. He was very friendly. Shayla checked in on us to see how everything was. She was very friendly and professional. The soup was delicious. The spring rolls were nothing special. The entree was tasty but almost NO vegetables. She said we could have ordered extra vegetables! Shouldn't they come in the dish already? Overall, the decor is simple and pleasant. The dining room seemed to be quite clean. The total was about $37. With us sharing everything( no leftovers).
