I have gone to the FU bookstore several times, looking for specific books. Not obscure books, but popular literary works on "best seller" lists and/or highly reviewed. I have never found them there, nor has a clerk ever heard of them. I've tried to run in to grab something random to read while traveling or for a beach day, only to find them closed. 10:00 am to 6:00 pm?? I just don't bother anymore. This is not a bookstore interested in serving the community or serious readers. Save your energy and drive down to Westport for the closest real bookstore. read more

While my preference is to shop in used bookstores for my own collection, I decided to check out this place as I was looking for a gift. The store is spacious and well organized and I liked that there was a best seller list table right when you walk it. Decent selection of books prominently displayed; I enjoyed looking at all the different genres. They have greeting cards, gift items, Fairfield U clothing and paraphernalia. I was able to find a great book gift that happened to be 30 percent off. They also have a cafe/coffee shop and some indoor and outdoor seating. Upstairs for the textbooks. On street parking. I would recommend a visit. read more

There are so many reasons why I love this bookstore. It's located in the center of Fairfield, which is perfect for window watching while reading a book. The display is organized and labeled according to the genre. The store does a great job updating the bestsellers and noteworthy reads. I personally buy new books in hopes of sharing it with my friends and family. My fiancé and I try to go once a week to read or sit to drink coffee. Plus, there is a Starbucks inside! read more

Love coming to this bookstore with my grandson. We enjoy the children's section and as a new reader he loves to go through the aisles searching for new exciting books. We also discovered that they have a storytelling time with arts and crafts as well. My grandson had a great time, you need to sign up either online or at the store. We always go get a coffee/ refreshment at the Starbucks while there. My grandson looks forward to reading his book with a baked good. I also enjoy their history section as well! read more

After four years of getting my textbooks here I can honestly say shop on Amazon. The staff at the bookstore issuper nice, except for the manager. If you have any issues with an order he will undoubtedly blame you for the bookstore messing up and will personally make it difficult for you to be refunded. Though the rest of the staff was always pleasant it's not worth it when you could just as easily order your books from Amazon and probably get a better deal. read more

I have going to this bookstore for the last 20 years (Borders) and the energy has really gone downhill. Long gone are the days when you could buy a drink or a cookie and peacefully skim through pages before deciding what to buy. They have signs preventing you from bringing reading material into the seating area unless you have already purchased it. I used to walk away from this place feeling like I had almost always found something that would bring me joy; that's no longer possible when I have no idea what I'm buying. I am a student and have come in here on a few occasions to study. I stopped in this store once again during the power outage in early August. I had tried to come by early & realized they weren't open and had to buy my morning coffee at the starbucks down the street. I waited outside the bookstore until they unlocked their doors to get a good seat. I wasn't aware that the starbucks inside the bookstore and the starbucks down the road weren't affiliated with one another. So when the manager came to lecture me within the first few minutes of sitting down, about how rude I was for bringing in a different starbucks coffee... I was obviously confused. Once I learned this, I told him I was happy to make a purchase within the bookstore. But he didn't stop there! He made me feel like I was the most inconsiderate and ignorant person on the planet over a simple mistake that I was willing to correct. He then proceeded to drone on about how people have lost power... YES, I was well aware the whole state is without power as my apartment hadn't had any all week & all of the food in my fridge was about the spoil. I don't know what made him think he had the authority to lord over someone he barely knows when EVERYONE is struggling. It was embarrassing because it was done in front of other customers and then he badmouthed about me to the barista so she could also harass me about purchasing something two minutes later. I didn't last 15 minutes in that shop before I decided I felt too alienated to work there & left. I have had plenty of days where I needed to work & wish I could stop there again but just couldn't bring myself to go back to such an insufferable environment. Gonna give two stars because I used to love this place and made many great memories here as a kid... exploring the aisles while waiting to watch a $4 movie at the community theater down the road. I miss those days! Hate what a miserable hole this place has turned into. read more

Not a fan of the multiple signs in the Magazines section, about "No Reading a Magazine Until You Pay For It". What is that all about ? Even if I normally enjoy a certain magazine, it does not mean the current issue is good enough to drop $5-$6 on until perusing the articles prior to purchase. And yes, I`ll admit, sometimes I want to kill 5 minutes flipping through a random magazine that I likely will not buy. When this was Borders, either of those scenarios, the customers could do without any issues or off-putting signs. Its tactics like this from retailers that simply discourage buying and loyalty....not a smart business move. read more

This bookstore doesn't allow you to bring books into the cafe area. Their reasoning is that merchandise gets ruined by spilled drinks too often and customers leave the books sitting around so the staff has to put them back ... and so they have banned books (pun intended) from the cafe. I go to a bookstore for the experience-- I like to shop, collect a huge pile of books, get a coffee and a snack, and relax by reading the jackets and covers, the first few pages... I always leave making a big purchase. Book-addiction is definitely a problem of mine. Have I left a few books hanging around the cafe in a few bookstores? On occasion. But returning merchandise to its rightful home is a pretty basic function of a retail store-- having extensive background in retail, I can say this confidently. And if putting a few books back is part of the price to keep my business, I think that's a pretty good deal. Have I ever spilled my drink on any of the books? No, I haven't. But if I did, I would expect to have to pay for the merchandise I ruined. To conclude-- bookstores are a dying breed, and if you're going to have one, I think it's important to make it as pleasant a place as possible. To me, shopping here is no different from shopping on Amazon, where I can get everything for 20% cheaper. I'll save my money and get the books delivered directly to my door. And If I'm really in the mood to enjoy myself, I just go up the road to the Barnes and Nobles in Westport, where having a coffee while contemplating your book purchase isn't a crime. read more

So, as the story goes... Boy meets girl, girl goes to bookstore, girl meets boy reading Road and Track at the magazine rack, yadda X 3 and now shes in the contraception section....crying. Ive seen it all back in my day, oh yes, when Old Post Road was just known as, believe it or not, Post Road. Stacy used to scour these hallowed streets for a place to buy Coffee, read books and buy Brooks Brothers stuff (NICE STUFF!) adorned with the likeness of LUCAS! Bottom line, this place needs work. Coming from an Alum, FU has been half assing some of their recent renovations- mainly in the design category.... AKA- DONT REGRESS TO THE 90s!! CLEAN THIS PLACE------UP! Its not hard, just kick anyone off the board who is still watching VHS of Family Ties and Charles in Charge (keep the Mr. Belvedere fans- theres always room for some panache 'round here) and get some Mondrian lovin, crepe eatin, granola makin artsy folks from BARD or somethin and spice this place UP! read more

Fairfield university pretty much reopened the Borders which used to be there. The setup is layed the exact same. Some upgrades though... They put a Starbucks in place of the Seattle's Best. They expanded the electronics section. They now force students to go downtown to the bookstore to get their textbooks. The bookstore also does not buy enough textbooks for students. It's difficult to take classes without a store providing for students. read more

the Starbucks in the book store is obnoxious and you should not get anything from there the workers are rude and mean. take the extra 2 minutes and got to the larger "real" location down the road. on Starbucks policy its says that each drink is individual and can be modified to your liking. as it is winter and very cold I decide to ask for no ice. I figured since for most iced drinks they fill half the cup with ice I thought they might only leave a little of the cup empty but nope more than half of the cup. I have went to multiple locations and gotten the same drink and gotten a full cup of Uniced juice. I have continually gotten this drink half full from this location. I have had multiple issues with the book store as well. I don't recommend to come here at all. read more

I am a new student at Fairfield University. I called ahead to make sure that I was in the system so that I didn't drive all the way down to Fairfield and find out that I wasn't and I couldn't access my Financial Aid. I was able to speak to a woman by the name of Nicky and she was absolutely stupendous. Not only did go through all the extra hoops to make sure I was in the system, but she followed up with me the following day to make sure I didn't have any problems and that I made out ok. That is customer service at it's best! Thanks Nicky! You make a great first impression! read more

I worked at this bookstore for several months my freshman year of FU to make some spare money. This was just as it opened, and it was probably one of the most boring jobs I've ever had. My most pleasant memory was reading "Notes from the Underground" by Dostoevsky why standing idling at the cash register on a slow night. I didn't mind the decor of the store and the selection was as good as any. The people I worked with certainly nice and interesting, but a couple of the managers were simply self-important and enjoyed their petty power trips. Good riddance. read more

It's great that they have live music.....and free. I think that's the best. I think you should be able to sneak a book into the café as long as you take care of it and put it back. I agree that book stores are about looking through books and spending time in the store. read more

They generally stock the classics and popular new books. If I can't find something here, I usually can't find it at Barnes & Noble either. B&N may have a slightly bigger selection, but the Fairfield U bookstore is fine by me. They also have a Starbucks inside, and they've even had musicians play live in the seating area by the Starbucks. read more

compelled to review this one. this is a rant review, just so you know if you go on reading: in the service industry one of the typical interview questions people get asked is "recall a time when you received very good or very poor customer service." i cannot wait to launch my next job search so i can go in readily prepared with a response to this question. my dealings with the fairfield university bookstore are an example of poor customer service and there are numerous ways in which i would have handled customer relations differently and behaved in a more professional manner. this is a nice, typical bookstore with basic selection and some interesting features. i like the people who work at the starbucks cafe and find it clean etc. so on a visit there i received some help finding a book for my boyfriend (i had the name but the guy who had offered to help me asked if i had the author too. can't you just find it on the least amount of information i give you? this looks lazy to me). I purchased the book and the cashier was a sweetheart and i sat in the cafe. when i got home later that night i realized i couldn't find the book anywhere and i must have lost it at the cafe. i called the bookstore the next day and a girl picked up the phone and i explained what happened. she checked with the cafe but they said they hadn't found anything so oh well so sorry. ummmm.... i was not okay with this i had just purchased a book and it got blown into the wind. when i have customers who lose personal belongings in my establishment i respond with compassion. I never leave a conversation without taking a name and number in case the item turns up. this little child working for the bookstore didn't want to do anything else for me. i asked if there were any other recourse and she told me she could get her manager. this guy was pretty rude, he didn't want to talk to me either. he decided to check the bookstores lost and found, something that hadn't occurred to employee of the month. of course my book was there. they made it seem like they weren't going to keep it on hold for me until i could make it in. i had already paid for it!!!! there are people who are rude because they are snobby, there are people who are rude because they are miserable. i cannot place my finger on why the people who work at fairfield university bookstore are rude. if i had to guess i would say it is because they are stupid. perhaps they should read some books. read more

I was thrilled to see another bookstore take over the old Borders location. Although the fiction selection is smaller than before, the staff have always been friendly and helpful. I recently bought a book with a publishing error and called to speak with a manager about making an exchange without a receipt. When I arrived later that day, she had a new copy of the book waiting for me and I was in and out of the store in less than 5 minutes. I also love the rewards system - looking forward to making my 10th purchase and seeing the amount of credit available! read more

What a disappointment! I returned to Fairfield recently to find that Fairfield University had bought Borders. The store is such a disappointment. I feel sorry for the students who have to buy their books there. The bookstore on campus was great and they always had what you needed. This store clearly is not the typical university bookstore and it is definitely not as good as Borders. Rude manager dismissed my question about the changes. Customer service much? read more
