Byrd's is one of our favorite bookstores in the country. (Our absolute favorites are specialty bookstores in Manhattan. You do have visit those if you want art monographs, theory, specific history topics, or rare books.) But Byrd's is our favorite bookstore, so far, in Connecticut. Though small, and therefore somewhat limited, it has a particularly good youth fiction selection (fantasy, etc.,) a solid selection of other fiction, some nicely chosen poetry, and even academic writings. What makes the trip extra fun is that the shop employs people who love books and can talk about books knowledgeably. That brings service to the forefront: There's a difference in dealing with people who want to engage you about the content in books versus those who merely want to sell books (as if books were potatoes or tee-shirts.) So the trip to Byrd's is always illuminating and social. We value both the inventory and the people at Byrd's. Good book people are a valuable and endangered class. read more

It can be tough for smaller bookstore to find its niche and to find a book distribution that suits it. Byrd's seems to have done that nicely. A large part of their selection is a little bit of everything, but they balance that with a number of staff picked recommendations. The remainder is an interesting mix of craft-related items (they have a large inventory of coloring books and pencils), and a large selection of books for teens and pre-teens. It's very obvious from what they sell that they are very passionate about what they do as well. Stores like these are gems. read more

Have been trying to support local and small, independent stores. Unfortunately, the price they charged on my rather generic box of Christmas cards were just a little too steep for my taste. So I am afraid I will have to continue to patronize larger stores for now over Byrd's, which is just a little too expensive for my taste. read more

I had a very nice experience at this bookstore. I was in town on business and decided to stop in to check it out. It's avery nice store with a wonderful staff that is extremely knowledgeable and wonderful to talk to. The prices are very reasonable and I hope I have to go back to the area in the future so I can stop at Byrd's visit and grab another book. read more

Wonderful selection of local authors and some really interesting selections. Take time with the owners, almost like they are interviewing you to find out what you like to read, and they will suggest books just up your alley. I just wish they were open Mondays, but I understand the life of retail, and know they need a day off. read more

A wonderful independent book store right in downtown Bethel, Byrd's Books has moved across the street and a half mile up Greenwood Avenue. No more stairs and access through the front door and from the parking lot behind the building. There is a great selection to browse and knowledgable staff to assist you. Byrd's Books will order for you if your title is not in stock. They also offer a selection of cards and gifts. Wish I could give them more stars. read more

Byrds Books is my favorite local bookstore. The selection is great. Whether I am looking for a gift or for a book for myself, I never leave empty-handed. There is a good selection on the marked-down table as well as current titles and specialty reads. The store also offers an assortment of jewelry and other items made by local artisans.
