Management change is the only way this dog track could ever change. For example, the driving range was closed. Reason unknown as the website had no info. If it was due to lack of personnel, then the head pro should man the ball picker himself. read more

Teenage staff that didn't know the difference from the red and black course. The tee boxes are complete chewed up, the greens are in rough shape and the fairway is about as long as the rough. Plenty of other courses in the area that are well kept. read more

Had a real rough experience here yesterday. 2 real young girls running the pro shop and admittedly had zero clue what they were doing. Wouldn't let me use a gift card I had because they had no idea how to apply it to the round and was given left handed rental clubs (after waiting for 10 mins because they didn't know where the rental clubs were) even after asking for right handed ones. Not the type to leave reviews for places at all but this was pretty shameful for such a good course read more

Fairchild Wheeler golf course pretty much spent my entire afternoon making their best effort to piss me off. They succeeded. I showed up to play on a weekday afternoon with my friend. He brought his girlfriend, who just wanted to watch, and was gladly willing to pay the cart fee. Here's the rundown of what ensued... Point of infuriation #1: The plainly ABSURD dress code. This is a public golf course, not Augusta National. The manager actually demanded my friend's girlfriend go home and change clothes because she didn't have a collared shirt. What else can you say when a public golf course lives by the social norms of the 1920s?! Point of infuriation #2: The starter was one of the most horrible human beings I have ever had the displeasure of doing business with. Nasty, impudent, holier-than-thou attitude... especially towards my friend, who is a new golfer, and needed some help with the cart. Instead of help, he received sneers and general douchery. At this point, my friend gave up and demanded his money back. When asked why, he replied to their faces, "everyone I've come in contact with has been an enormous asshole to me since I got here." He was right. Meanwhile, I made a very poor choice by actually playing the round without him. Which brings me to... Point of infuriation #3: The completely UNACCEPTABLE condition of the course. All the greens had been aerated, and had sand carelessly dumped all over them. In a word: un-puttable. I don't need my greens to be made out of Egyptian cotton, but good god, this was like putting on a cobblestone walkway. I was not warned, I was not charged a lower rate... I was just flat out cheated. You've been warned about this circus of a golf operation. I surely won't be back. read more

This is the absolute worst excuse for a golf course in the state of Connecticut and possibly the entire northeast. Where to even begin? Every tee box is full of crab grass, barely mown, and uneven. Every "fairway" has more bare spots than the desert. The staff are generally awful. The carts are old and falling apart. And yet it still costs $35-50 on average. Avoid at all costs. You've been warned. I wouldn't play it for free. read more

Played Black today. Course has gone severely down hill in one year. The tee boxes are dirt. Greens are shabby and picked with ball marks. Sand traps are never raked nor are divots filled. This has become a playground for seniors and uncaring players that ignore all the etiquette associated with golf. They think this is their personal sandbox. The grounds superintendent should be fired for the amount of bare dirt spots on the course- there are literally thousands- and tee boxes lacking grass. All in his job description. read more

I read some of the other reviews and felt I should set the record straight. I play about 65 rounds per year and I'm a 7 handicap and I play courses all over the world but I live in Westchester County NY and mainly play there, private and public. The Wheel, has two pretty decent courses, red and black. Red has a higher slope rating from the tips but the black supposedly plays harder but both are fair tests of golf. I just played red on Friday with a buddy, shot 83 and my friend, 82. Mid sept and the Greens were still running true. Some brown spots but it hasn't rained a lot this summer so that was normal. Tee boxes were fine and fairways and rough were in good shape. It's worth giving this track a shot. I too find the starters a little harsh but I'm afraid that's a bit of an epidemic among their ilk so don't let that stop you from having a great round! Enjoy! Also, I saw people reviewing the driving range and giving the course 1 star because they didn't like that! First, the driving range is just fine and second, it seems like the reviews are being written by non players or casual golfers with a beef which isn't very fair. read more

The Driving Range at this 36 hole course is awful. 1. There is no attendant, which would not be a problem if the machine toook anything other than 10 $1's or $5's- so you have to drive back to the clubhouse to get change. 2. The stalls are uncovered. So for the scorching months of July and August, you basically can't wait to get out of there as fast as possible. 3. Not all the stalls have tees, and if they do have tees, you better plan on practicing whatever club you normally hit from that tee height. 4. The balls are a collection of whatever they find on the course, plus old practice balls, plus OLDER practice balls....I felt like I was hitting rocks. 5. As previously, it is very hot out there, and yet there is no water of any kind.....not the free kind and not the kind you can pay for.No water, no vending, nada. For a course with 36 holes that takes things like it's dress code very seriously (which i respect), the range is shameful. read more

Today, on a whim I decided to see if I could play 9 holes on the Red Course. I was not hell bent on playing; but thought it might be fun to Red Course instead of the Black. I am old enough to well remember when the nines were reversed, and what is now 1 was 10 and 18 was 9 and so on. I wish they would realize switching was a mistake for many reasons - the biggest ones being the spectators were robbed of the enjoyment of having the 18th green and 1st tee being right next to the clubhouse. But I digress. The staff was more than accomodating. The cashier gave me a resident rate without a hassle. (I just took up residence here on 10/1) $20 later I'm on the tee - roughly 3:15 without a tee time, reservation, or hassle. "Have a nice round," the starter said. "Thanks," I said. (A little courtesy goes long way.) Anyway, I barely saw anyone on the course. I had a lost tee shot in the middle of the fairway on #3. Are my eyes going? But no biggie. You have to understand the Red Course knocks you off guard from the very first hole. The longer your drive on #1 (I was playing from the Blues) the more blind the second shot due to the steep hill. Name another course where the first hole is the #1 HANDICAP HOLE? Anyway I had a wonderful round and many golden moments. The silence, the simple, predictable, yet subtle upsetting challanges in wind, slope, terraine, perspective, are what make the game. Architect Robert White's work still holds up today. The Red and Black Courses have always been known for serious, competant, and pleasant competative golf. Their summer golf school is better than many others in the area. Easily tougher then Longshore, and a nicer parking lot than Smith. Cheers DFW! Keep it going! read more

If you're more than 20 minutes out, don't bother. Place is fine for a muni, but def not worth any drive over 20 minutes. Made the mistake (being from The Valley), thinking that it'd be nice cause it was Fairfield. Nope. Not a dump, but not worth the ride. All other reviews you've read are accurate description of this highly overpriced municipal golf course! Definitely would not come back unless it was free! read more

For the value I would play again but pace of play was slow almost 5 hours to complete the round. Tee boxes and fairways in okay shape. The greens played slow but in good shape. read more

I checked the website today and called....both stated they were open....left NYC to go play...when I get there the guy with a mustache tells me they are closed...i told him that the website said they were open and i called and the answering machine said they were open...the guys response..."Well, you did not call me"....no sorry or anything...very snooty read more

Decent practice facilities.....the staff is polite and helpful. The Black course is severely hilly and because of that it plays very long for the stated course yardage. Greens are ok but slow. Tee boxes are poorly maintained. Fairways and green surrounds are very 'spotty'....mostly good but frequent and large patches of bare spots. Cart paths, rough, and even fairways are bumpy and choppy. I have played most of the 'daily fee' courses in southern Connecticut and this was the least enjoyable of any that I have played.....I will not be back. read more

2:40 minutes to play through 9 holes. Marshall was nowhere to be seen, except in parking lot after "round" chatting with regulars. Even had a group of 5 players in front of us... Decent course, but impossible to get a rhythm going when you're waiting at least 5 mins before every tee shot. read more
