I would definitely watch out for the queue at lunchtime during the week, the BBC is just down the road, and many of its staff choose to grab their lunch from here. If you have more time to spare, eating in is certainly an option. I've always been quite a fan of their jacket potatoes, but again be prepared on weekday lunchtimes for a bit of a wait, as they generally focus on customers having food to go.

I came here mid-afternoon and it was already packed with only one table available. One thing I have to applaud this place for are the AMAZING restrooms. I'm pretty sure they invest all of their money in just upgrading the toilets. Full-length mirrors, cushy couches, ultra-clean - I was not expecting all of that to come from just a normal pub. Customer Service: Really good. There is a bit of a wait for the food but that's understandable given how busy the establishment gets, but just don't expect a quick meal. The servers were polite, courteous, and friendly. Food: They have special days where certain things on the menu are cheaper. For instance, on Thursdays it's Curry Club with cheap and delicious curries. They also have Steak Club and other specials as well - all affordable! I ordered the Welsh Steak & Brains Ale Meat Pie, which came with vegetables (option for mushy peas) and mashed potatoes with gravy. It was a bit disappointing because the portions were a bit smaller than I expected, but the meal was still delicious. The pastry on the pie was flaky and incredible, meat soft and tender. Unfortunately, I was still extremely hungry even after finishing that main and could have probably finished another set. They do have a small yet delicious selection of desserts as well. I had the Stick Toffee Pudding with Ice Cream (hot custard is an option). I personally recommend choosing it with Ice Cream because the warmth of the Toffee Pudding brilliantly contrasts with the cold Ice Cream. Fantastic dessert! --- I would definitely make another return trip to The John Capel Hanbury. Just keep in mind that if you go in starving, you might want to order a bit more to make up for the tiny portions.

There are tables outside both doors, so you can sit outside in the summer (or in the winter if you need to smoke!) The service is friendly and pretty quick. Prices are reasonable, and the menu is standard coffee shop fare - sandwhiches, panninnis etc. There are some lovely homemade soups on at the moment, which make a nice change for a winter lunchtime. They also have pies and other specials on at the mo. After trying most of the bridgend coffee shops during a lunchbreak Bauhaus ranks as one of the best in Bridgend. It's nice that independent coffee shops are still going strong in Bridgend - you definately get more friendly service here than in a typical chain coffee place.

Hayes Island Snack Bar kind of does what it says on the tin…read more This pedestrianised 'square' has long been a popular central spot for meeting up, and the snack bar at its heart seems to do very well out of this. It has a great location, but it's not the classiest of joints - and certainly isn't a place to go for a healthy bite to eat (think breakfast baguettes and carvery sandwiches rather than light salads). The smell of cooking meat never fails to attract passers-by, though - and before you know it on a fine day the seating under the trees is packed out with people tucking into overloaded bacon sandwiches and cheap cups of tea. Its popularity endures despite its proximity to the old Victorian underground toilets, which waft up a vague scent of cleaning products, and the resident pigeons, notorious for their accurate aim, perched in the trees above - you have been warned!

With the bustling shops all around, and the new St David's hopping Centre breathing new life into this end of town, this really is a pleasant little square in the centre of it all. Why, oh why, then, do we have such a dingy little snack bar situated right slap bang in the middle of it? Serving hot drinks and burgers and such, this is less a snack bar than a roadside burger van. I always wander past wishing that there was some other food on offer there. Because the seats in The Hayes all belong to them, so going to get sushi and bringing it to enjoy out in the sun is a bit of a no-no. They also don't tend to keep their area all that clean and tidy, perhaps relying on the council to do their cleaning services for them. This means that quite often there can be a build up of rubbish and chips, attracting seagulls and pigeons galore. I just get the overriding impression that this corner of Cardiff has seen better days.

This is one of the nicer branches! Yay!…read more I remember well the days when Subway was new and exciting and we all flocked through it's doors because we'd never really seen the like of it before. Little did ywe know that it was soon to take over the world!!! I've even seen a Subway in northern Iceland. It's scary. And at the same time, I'm not quite sure how I feel about them. Subway masquerades as something which is good for us, it's even mentioned in diet plans and on the Atkins, but I'm personally not convinced. Yes, the food is fresh (and pretty tastey, darn it) but I'm not too sure about the calories content. What they always get you on are all those cheese, sauces, cookies and fizzy drinks... after that lot who cares if there was a little bit of salad in the roll or not. Oh well, stick to the 6 inch sub of the day, and you'll not go too far wrong.
