This is a very popular pub with an enviable location on the coast, opposite Sully Island (which is…read moremore of an islet but still scenic). There's an extensive garden with sea views, though (sadly) the access road and car parking sit between the pub and the sea front itself. The pub was originally a row of fishermen's cottages, and converted into the pub in 1977. The interior therefore has an appropriately rustic feel, although extensions and recent renovations have taken away from of its original atmosphere. It is named after the story of nearby Sully House, where its sea captain owner reputedly buried his wife in a nearby wood rather than declare her death at sea. They have a menu of standard pub grub with a couple of veggie options - starters range from £4.95 (garlic bread) to a whole baked Camembert (£13.25); mains are around £12 - £20 and include lasagne, beef casserole, fish & chips, gammon & chips, roast sea-bass, salmon with pesto, and roast lamb. There are also pizzas, burgers, salads and steaks. Puddings are around £6-£7. There's also a lunch menu with lighter options. There's a full bar available, but a couple of real ales on tap. The quality is okay but it's slightly formulaic - you can tell it's owned by a pub chain. (Vintage Inns.) Service on my recent visit was very good, but things can slow up in the summer when it gets very busy. A word of warning: if you decide to visit Sully Island, abide by the tide warnings. The causeway gets rapidly cut off by the rising tide and the currents make it too dangerous to wade or swim back.

This gorgeous restaurant-pub used to make the kinda homemade food you'd expect of a seaside tavern steeped in history. But then along came a culture of suing and with that businesses became paranoid and food started to be brought in precooked, frozen and you can taste it. I mean it's ok, but far from special. All that aside it is a lovely spot, at low tide you can walk over to Sully Island, but be warned the tide will turn and you could well end up marooned! The interior of the Captains Wife was renovated a few years ago, well, but personally I think it lost a little of its rough around the edges charm, which I'm a sucker for. The place still has loads of character, an open fire, little cubby holes and exposed beams. The Captain's Wife's website has some interesting information about the pub's history which was apparently popular with pirates and smugglers: "The Captain's Wife was originally Sully House, a house originally owned by a captain. Legend has it that when his wife died, her body was kept in a box that was mistaken for treasure and stolen." Perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon's beer supping and newspaper reading and perhaps a little walk on the beach to make you feel like you earned it.

So this morning, bleary eyed and not exactly bushy tailed my good friend and I hauled ourselves into my car in search of the holy grail of toast and tea. Both of us, being dirty stinking vegetarians, are difficult to please so not just any old greasy spoon would have been sufficient. Hidden down a little back street near the train station is this absolute gem of a place called 'The Trade Street Cafe'. I'd been there before about a month or so previously so that a man I was seeing could break up with me in a public place (presumably to guarantee his safety), so have since thought of it fondly. They have all of the usual breakfast/lunch type items. Delicious chunky baguettes and bagels, full English breakfasts and coffee in abundance. The place is clean, well decorated and inviting with good friendly service, fair trade and organic food and lots of ethical goodies like recycled napkins. We both opted for the 'Vegetarian Breakfast', which is usually a lacklustre affair but in this case consisted of a gorgeous vegetarian sausage, two fried eggs, a large grilled mushroom, an espresso cup filled with beans (a nice touch presentation wise, it looked super cute), two grilled tomatoes and two pieces of toast. Included was a cup of tea or coffee and all for the bargain price of £4.75. We left quite full and set up for the day with smiley faces, despite the fact I got a bit of egg in my hair and my companion dropped baked beans down the front of her coat. I can't recommend this place enough Not just for a break up venue but also as a jolly good place to have a decent bit of grub.

The North Star is a vast pub cum restaurant and music venue occupying a prominent position on North…read moreRoad in the Maindy / Gabalfa area of Cardiff. It is an incredibly inspiring and important addition to the cultural wealth of the city. Opened in October last year, it is already the home to a cosmopolitan mix of locals, business people and students, as well as regular visitors from all over the city and beyond. When you walk into The North Star you can appreciate why it has such a draw. The old Victorian mansion-sized building has been lovingly refurbished with impressive style. The modern look, embellished with antique flourishes and an eclectic use of period furniture, has been created by Tim Rice, one of Cardiff's most successful designers, leading The North Star to be shortlisted for 'The Best Bar and Restaurant Design Awards' within months of its unveiling. It also scooped up another accolade when it was voted the fifth best 'cheap eat' in the UK by The Guardian. There's more to say about The North Star than I've got space here on Yelp. It's a multi-faceted business that offers a lot, to many. Managed by a brother and sister team, with Alex taking care of front of house, and her brother conjuring up epicurean delights in the kitchen. The food, organic and locally sourced wherever possible, is extensive in range and all homemade from scratch, including the relishes, dough's and even the Yorkshire puds! Dishes are predominantly Italian, but the menu frequently includes Welsh favourites like cockles and lava bread, Monmouthshire lamb and potted pig. With deals like '2 for 1' operating from Monday to Friday, customers are visibly increasing on a weekly basis. Specialty dishes are changed regularly, usually prompted by the advice of their local butcher, J T Morgan, who tips them the wink about all the best seasonal cuts on offer. Established in 1861, J T Morgan Butchers have occupied a position of importance at the indoor market, in central Cardiff, for more years than anyone can remember. A family butchers that have moved with the times, they are presently one of the most recognized purveyors of free range and organic meat and poultry in South Wales. Not surprisingly, The North Star makes the most of a good thing. As well as fantastic Sunday lunches, boasting the most succulent roasts in town, they're also hosting BBQ's on Friday and Sundays over the warmer months. Live music is on offer most days of the week, kicking off on Wednesdays with the Open Mic Night hosted by Rowan Liggett, who is also Co-Director of The Miniature Music Press, a really well produced A5 music magazine and 'What's On', that you can pick up for free at a whole host of places around the city. The North Star also has a sister pub worth mentioning; The Vulcan in Cathays on Wyvern Road, another haunt of the ubiquitous Rowan Liggett, who runs the Open Mic nights here as well. Frequented mainly by students, this is a cool live music pub, also designed by Tim Rice, that is equally well worth checking out. www.theminiaturemusicpress.com/

It would be a lovely Sunday place hangout I think. Prices are probably aimed at the students so its fairly cheap and there seems to be lots of events going on. Just wish parking was easier round there.

The bar area boasts plenty of seating with stools and couches as well to cater to groups of various sizes. Despite being a bar, it's quite upscale and kept very clean. The décor is very interesting as well with a very interesting mural on the wall reminiscent of 1950s Soviet propaganda which definitely amused us! CUSTOMER SERVICE: Long queues at the bar, but the staff did their best to keep up with demand. After ordering food, everything took a reasonable time to arrive and our waitress took great care of us. No problems at all with the service. FOOD & DRINKS: Their pina colada was excellent. For food, I had the Roasted Pork Belly. Cooked very well, the only fault is that the gravy was a bit bland and required quite a bit of extra seasoning from myself to give it a bit more life. Also tried the Whole Baked Camembert which came with some chutney and bread. Can't go wrong with excellent camembert! --- Overall, the food was great and well cooked. Our large group was well looked after and everything came at the same time which a lot of places don't pull off well at all. No faults that I can find! I would definitely come back again.
