I know quite a few people who take issue with Subway simply because of the ubiquitous nature of the business. They see them on every street corner and, reflected in the glass, they see the death of small, locally owned delis and cafes that can't compete with Subway's all conquering business model. It's the same reflex that causes people recoil at the mention of Starbucks, or to complain about the latest popular TV series they've never seen.
I, however, am a corporate hussy, and am perfectly willing to swim in the murky waters of capitalism if it gets me a great sandwich, so I love Subway.
This one in particular has been a godsend in the past. If you're around that area and needed a quick snack for lunch, you were largely out of luck; your only options were either a 5 minute trek up City Road to the chippy, or nipping into the local newsagents to grab an unsatisfying sandwich. Subway arrived and solved all those problems.
This is less the case now, due to the sandwich bar that's opened just across the street; now you have an element of choice. I still pick Subway every time though, because say what you like about their business model, they make a damn fine sandwich. read more
