Although I wanted to review as soon as I left, I had to let Donna have the first review for finding…read morethis gem and adding it to Yelp. I was absolutely blown away. It is a divey little place that is far from divey when it comes to the food. Mexican seafood has been on my must try list and I may never need to go anywhere else. The fish is cooked perfectly. Flaky yet moist and the two options I tried were full of flavor. A plate of fish would satisfy me. The meals come with a nice creamy, minimal potato salad that I thought was perfect. Well cooked potatoes with just a touch of bite. The rice is a good Mexican rice. Nice flavor, I would bet cooked in broth. The salad is simple. The simpleness of the sides really highlight the fish and make them the perfect companions. A basket of crackers and hard tortillas are served as you sit down. I pretty much ignore them, but decided to try a tortilla before and my meal. Alone, a nice crunch shell, with a little fish on it, both are elevated to an incredible level. This is a must try. The restaurant is small. The booths are a little padding deficient. Service is great and the food is some of the best in the city!

Everything. Most authentic you'll find pretty much anywhere close unless you're in California. And…read moreeven then this place rivals some of the best places I've tried back home in California. No exaggeration. It's the best.

The table started with Ceviche Mixto and Empanadas de Camaron. This was a perfect place for our family, as we like to share so everyone gets to enjoy different items. Main courses: Ostiones Aguachiles Rojos, Ostiones Zarandeados, Molcajete Frio, Apetcucaracha and Fajitas de Res. Both were delicious, however, I preferred the Ostiones Zarandeados over the Aguachiles Rojos, and glad we got the Molcajete Frio, because as a cold dish, was the one item we couldn't finish and took to go. I had the Mezcalita, and it was good, but a bit sweeter than I expected. The Paloma was spot-on. Definitely going to return.

This restaurant on Shawnee Drive near the Argentine area has excellent Mexican seafood. The menu…read moreis similar to the one at Marisco KC on Newman Rd in Shawnee, KS, but the menu at Playa & Mezcal is larger and somewhat more innovative. We were very impressed by the food and service at Playa & Mezcal, but the dining room at Marisco is more comfortable with padded seats. All of the seats at Playa & Mezcal are wooden without padding. At Playa & Mezcal, we got Ceviche De Camaron as appetizer. As entrees we got Filete A La Planca and Filete Empanizado. As a sauce, we got Topochico. Everything was excellent. We've never had better Mexican seafood anywhere, including in Mexico. The prices are higher than at the typical Tex-Mex restaurant but the food is far better. Padding on the seats would help. For that reason alone, we will probably prefer Marisco KC at the present time for a comfortable dinner. For a fast lunch, the seating at Playa & Mezcal would be fine. They have a full bar, but no iced tea or non-alcoholic beer.
