a hand holding a bottle of olive vinegar

Heaven! We always keep fig balsamic and blood orange olive oil on hand. You could literally use any of their balsamic vinegars as salad dressing as-is.

I'm torn and confused. I want to give The Tasteful Olive 5 stars but figure I better settle with 3 for the time being. I love what the store has to offer....olive oil and balsamic vinegars. I love that you get to taste them before buying. I love the blackberry balsamic that I bought poured over vanilla bean ice cream with fresh blackberries! I love that KC has a store that specializes in these products. I'm not a fan of "country decor" but I can overlook that if the product and service rise far above a decor choice that I'm not a fan of. The product definitely does. The service.....well! It did take awhile for anyone to greet us, which when you walk into the only store in town that specializes in oil and vinegar, you kinda want someone to say "hi" and tell you how it all works. I was pushed aside from an oil I was sampling by who turned out to be an owner, all so he could show another customer his favorites. He never said "excuse me" or asked if I needed any help! Frustrating!!! When I was finally greeted by a younger employee, she was helpful and nice. All the way from entering to checking out, it seems that the Tasteful Olive is happier to have what appears, middle-aged, suburban couples supporting them rather than anyone that doesn't fit that description. I plan on going back because the product is so good. I will update if I find the service any better or worse on the next visit.

I love that there is a place like this in KC. I discovered them at the Pitch food event earlier this year. I think it great that you can sample the olive oils, however I would much rather sample the oil on bread. That is probably not realistic for the budget, but I would definitely try more oil. It's just after the third cup of olive oil, I feel like my palette is too coated. I'm more likely to just buy a bottle based on flavors I know I love and try it at home.

Myriads of oils and vinegars with cups to taste
Julia F.

Beware that by visiting this store you might leave yourself open to a new addiction: these are not the balsamic vinegars and olive oils that your mother purchases in bulk at Costco. There are myriads of balsamic vinegars and extra-virgin olive oils here, all with little paper cups for customers to taste before purchase. For those who want a little help, the store provides "recipes" for combinations. They also sell pasta and various preserves. My only complaint (a small one) is that the store does not have the capabilities to recycle the the glass bottles at this time.

The pizza guy gave us some good intel on what to get and not get, and our pies were made perfectly and brought out hot to us. The bakery has a great selection of freshly made cookies, cakes and other fun items and they were all reasonably priced. I had a peanut butter explosion and the other ladies had some fun frosted sugar cookies. For me the cookies were too crumbly but they loved them. The reason for 3 stars was lack of customer service. I had to go to the front to get cups for soft drinks. The woman I approached didn't say 1 word to me when I told her what I needed. She just walked away to a register where she rang in my purchase. It would have been nice had she said, "follow me," or "I can help you with that." But i figured out what she was doing and paid at the register and then told her I had a problem. She said, "what?" with an irritated tone. I told her I needed the cups I had just paid for. Again, she walked away from me, apparently expecting me to follow her, and I did. Then she asked another employee to hand me the cups. The other woman did that and I thanked her. The cashier who rang up our few groceries was pleasant and the bagger actually joked with me, so at least I had that as I was leaving.

But this review is more a story about how this place operates. Every Veteran's Day area HyVee's have a breakfast for Vets. My little brother (Army Vet) and I (Navy Vet) go each year. Mostly so we can let the people at HyVee know that we appreciate not only the breakfast but that they as a company and as individuals that VOLUNTEER to work the event, are deeply appreciated. So special shout-out to them for their time and consideration! As for the grocery store itself. It is exactly what you want out of a grocery store. Some of the things I really love: Bright and Clean Huge Selection Meat counter people are really helpful Food counters are usually well stocked and organized. Some things that need improvement: Produce selection. Good Basics but there seems to be no expanded offerings. Also while on produce... they at one time had a lot of the precut onion and veg and did a good job maintaining that. But, that has slipped. Bakery. So many wonderful options. But, there is no one willing to talk with anybody at that counter ever. And the one thing that bugs me about every grocery store... impolite shoppers! Hey, we all want to get in and get out with what we hafta get... we can do so politely and courteously. Look up. Pay attention to what is going on around you. Ask yourself if you are going to be specifically getting in someones way/personal space? Ask yourself if you are about to run into someone with your cart? -Sigh- this does NOT influence the stars for this HyVee.

Normally I wouldn't say anything about such ignorance, but when I got home and saw that half of my groceries (that I paid over $200 for were damaged..I knew that I had to call a manager. I spoke with a very nice manager named Dave who was so kind to speak with and handled the situation like a Boss should. He reminded me of why I choose this location for my shopping. I love this store because it's the nearest store to go to return Amazon products. It also has a wide variety of meat, selections, cheese selections, and an amazing hot bar. You can get food items ranging from pizza to fried chicken to Indian curry plus incredible soups like minestrone and clam chowder. They have a wide variety of salads and cold food items like Sushi and sandwiches as well to offer. I recently checked out their cake selection and was blown away by the variety of decorative cupcakes they have started to carry. There is a cute little space near the entrance where you can enjoy the hot/cold bar food items. Apart from the above selections, they also have tons of frozen products, dairy items, vegetables, holistic medicines like supplements, clean skincare and makeup, and so on available for purchase. However, if I compare it with other stores, the pricing does tend to be on the higher side. That's why I do not do all my grocery shopping here. it's always clean. The staff is friendly approachable, and very helpful. If not for groceries, I would definitely recommend you to going in and trying their hot bar because you wouldn't regret it!! It's literally a one stop shop with everything you could want.

I also had a decaf iced latte, which was tasty. Both my mom and I agreed that the food was good and richly flavored. The employee who served us was both nice and knowledgeable, answering any questions we had about food options we weren't familiar with in easy to understand, succinct terms. When I went (mid afternoon on a Tuesday) it was pretty quiet, with one employee in the front and a couple of other patrons seated. There was some pop music in the background on low volume, which I appreciated. Overall the vibe at that time of day on a weekday was very calm. I'm interested in checking out their karaoke, live music, and tea time nights/events in the future. They definitely look like fun ways to spend some time! Ultimately, if you're looking for good, casual European fare, including Eastern European, or even if you're just curious, I absolutely recommend European Market and Cafe.

The vibes in here need some work- it's cold (I was gonna dine in and then changed my order to take out and eat in my sun warmed car). The music is bad American alternative (wrong vibes for the European Café and Market). The lights are fluorescent (ouchie on the eyes). Could use a cozier vibe. But a perfect stop to grab picnic items before heading out!
