a pink fire truck on display
Ralphie S.

Woo-Hoo the new Red X is open and way better than the old one. I just hated going to the old Red X; with it's dingy old building and weird floor layout. The new building is situated just east of the old space and on slightly higher ground, just in case the levee doesn't hold next time. A strikingly handsome building with just enough of the kitsch and artifacts that gives Red X it's 'touristy" charm. With the growth of the toney Briarcliff area and the urbanization of NKC, the new spot should be a draw for the more sophisticated shopper and still be able to retain the cheap smokes, cheap liquor and lotto players that have kept the doors open. A large granite boulder, a bronze "Remington" style sculpture and a refurbished 1950's era fire truck all await you before even getting your shopping cart. Collections are hung from the ceilings, display cases and strategically placed artifacts around the store provide eye candy. The aisles are named for local streets and the humongous liquor area has a bar, a high end room and a walk-in humidor. A hot food counter, and separate lotto and tobacco purchasing aisles remain. A huge improvement; not only keeping their uniqueness - but stepping up their game to be an area destination grocery option.

Cigar humidor

I've never been any place like it! I mean you can get beer/liquor/wine/cigars/firewood/99cent items/nails/cash your check/lottery/fried chicken/produce... and you can ring one of the bells outside. The staff are super friendly and helpful and also is really fun to people watch. However, I think they are upgrading and moving just down the road... I hope not because the character of this place lives with this building with the super low ceiling! Lol

Product selection vastly improved from old store and very good. However, not enough checkout stations. Lines way to long.

His response, "if they distribute it anywhere in KC, we carry it." While I get this is not an obscure brand, that kind of sums up Red-X.

It is in a small corner of North Kansas City and looks like a simple little supermarket with an Italian deli inside but the food here is really outstanding!!! They sell authentic Italian food like Italian sandwiches, pizzas, strombolis and moreeee. It was 100% worth the drive from South Overland Park and I am already thinking when I can go again. We went for lunch and ordered the Italian beef sandwich and the Angry Capone pizza. Both were really good and we did not expect it to be this tasty. The Italian beef was cooked perfectly and was tender at every bite with the right amount of cheese and spicy peppers. The pizza was even better!! It had a nice crispy base and was full of good toppings like Italian beef, smashed meatballs, pepperoni, lots of cheese and spicy peppers. I love spicy food so I really enjoyed it. Everything was hot, cheesy, a little spicy and very flavorful. If I have to choose between the two , I would pick the pizza over the sandwich. The supermarket part is also very well kept and offers wide variety of options to buy ranging from groceries to fresh flowers/herbs . Along with the Deli, they also sell homemade barbecue slabs, burnt ends, local Amish food, frozen pizzas, desserts like chocolate cake and vanilla cake, and also dishes like meatballs spaghetti, pasta and many many more fresh frozen grab and go dishes. There are only two tables outside so it is a small and simple set up. I enjoyed my time here and I think you will too 5/5!

The staff are always super friendly. They have a deli, a little hot bar area, sushi, bakery, floral, meat counter, and even an urgent care. The prices are in line or lower than other stores (At least in 2024 terms). I realize it's a grocery store and there's only so much you can review but I have a couple of good examples that show the excellence of the employees. 1. I was in the produce section and had some lettuce in my cart. One of the produce associates saw it and asked if I wanted that particular type of lettuce. He explained that it was starting to rust and that he could grab me some fresher heads. He went to the back, found me in the store, and swapped out my lettuce. Super above and beyond. 2. I was walking out of the store with my purchase and a bottle of wine I bought fell out of the bag and fell onto the ground outside. It was totally my fault. I put it in there and didn't do a great job-clearly. An associate was outside and went to grab some stuff to clean up the glass. When she came back outside, she instructed me to go to customer service so that they could get me another bottle. They didn't charge me for the replacement. Again, it was my mistake and they didn't have to do that at all. If you live in the area, definitely check them out.

After living in Lawrence for almost 10 years, I wasn't aware The Merc expanded and added a location…read morein Kansas City, Kansas. Opening in August of 2020, during the thick of a global pandemic must have been difficult. Nonetheless this community made it happen! Unfortunately this location will be closing permanently in 7 days so this review feels differently to write, but I wanted to make sure I took time out before the end of the year to recognize an amazing business concept. The Merc Co+Op is more than your average grocery store, unlike corporate chains they are completely independent owned by the community that shops there (and by you, if you choose). The first storefront opened in 1975 in downtown Lawrence with just one employee and a committed group of volunteer member owners. Over the last 50 years, The Merc Co+Op has grown from a single employee to a staff of nearly 100. The Merc Co+Op provides our community a place to shop, gather, eat, and learn by offering real food and sustainable products at reasonable prices through cooperative ownership and responsible commerce. From the kitchen use to the classroom events this space was needed and I'm glad the Merc saw this vision through. Unfortunately, I believe that with the pandemic and the economy right now it's hard for families to afford making an entire meal with the prices local farmers charge. Maybe this concept would've been better in a different location? Although, I live in the KC metro area July was my first and last visit because it seems out of the way compared to other stores I have to grocery shop as well. It could be a number of things, but it doesn't make it any less painful to let go of a great place! I really hope this isn't the end of the The Merc Co+Op franchise, but a pause before something new and just as meaningful blossoms. I hope this review is a moment to recognize everything this business means to many of us. The impact, memories and community won't disappear with the doors of this location closing. Thank you trying your best and creating opportunities for us to have food that is nourishing to our bodies. Forever grateful!!!

It wouldn't have been a big deal if the manager had helped check people out after most of them had been waiting for over 30 minutes in line. Two people were in front of me and wanted to buy alcohol and a bag of dog food I think? They wound up leaving because the manager told them "we can't check you out here." I would like to say, that is entirely false because I have been checked out at that counter a couple of times. They just didn't want to. And the people in front of me were understandably upset and left without their cart of items. It was after the upset customer left that this manager finally came to help. She walked off several times. She kept yelling at people to back up because the line started at the corner. This whole situation could have been avoided if they had two people at this counter from the start. There were 4 other people taking care of online orders back there. In response to Tara J.: As someone that used to work at walmart, I can tell you they do drug test BUT ONLY in the hiring process. I'd never gone to this particular location before, though, because the address made me nervous. But this weekend I was out of a few things and in a hurry, so decided to brave it. It turns out I had nothing at all to worry about. This was just as good as any other Aldi, and it was a perfectly safe place to shop. I've shopped at several different Aldi locations, so if I think of the best Aldi I've ever been to as getting 5 stars, then this would be a 4-star. The only reason it gets a ding is that it was missing some of the baking essentials that I've been able to find at other Aldi stores. However it does have one nice service that I haven't seen at other locations. Normally if you forget to bring your own bags you have to hunt through the store to find empty boxes to put your groceries in. This location, however, collects the empty boxes and brings them to a bin in the front of the store for you. That's a nice touch. This is one of the most ethnically diverse stores I have shopped in. It was particularly cool watching a woman walking home with groceries in both arms and a 24-pack of bottled water perfectly balanced on her head.
