Wow! This place was an absolute gem. We originally had a reservation elsewhere but decided to…read morecancel because we weren't very hungry and the reservation time was a little early. While we were out walking on King Street, a local recommended Stella's, and I'm so glad they did. We walked over from our Airbnb and immediately loved the space. The restaurant has two U-shaped bars in the center, which is my husband and my favorite place to sit when dining out. We went in with zero expectations and hadn't even looked at the menu beforehand, but everything ended up being incredible. The drinks were fantastic, and our bartender/server was so sweet. Even though we were one of the last couples seated that evening, we never felt rushed and were able to enjoy the meal at our own pace. We ordered the non-breaded calamari and a shrimp dish, and the calamari was honestly the best I've ever had. It was incredibly fresh, perfectly cooked, and the artichokes that came with it were so delicious. Every bite made me happy. We finished with the tiramisu, which our bartender recommended, and it was absolutely outstanding--easily the best tiramisu I've ever had. I'm still dreaming about this meal and would come back in a heartbeat the next time I'm in Charleston.

We had such a fun date night at Stella's downtown. I made us a reservation for a Saturday night at…read morethe bar, which we really enjoyed. We were surprised when we walked in and the bar was actually low, with low, spinny bar seats. But it actually was pretty unique and fun! Our server was excellent and gave us great recommendations. We started with the Stella's Kalamari that had sun-dried tomatoes, capers, and artichoke hearts. It was very flavorful and delicious. Something to keep in mind here is that the portions are pretty large. Perfect for splitting dishes and a lot of food for your buck. The stand out dish for me was the spanakopita. It's a flaky, crispy pastry with spinach and feta inside that you dip in tzatziki. What's not to love about all of that?? We splurged a bit on our entree and split the braised lamb shank. The lamb itself was pretty good, but what I enjoyed most was the pasta it comes with. I would maybe suggest trying a different entree. It wasn't my favorite, but it was good. For drinks I got the Cretan, which had cucumber infused gin, lime, rosemary and thyme. It was so refreshing and just what I wanted. I will definitely be coming back here and recommending it to others!

Now their prices have risen slightly but still that same great quality and good portion sizes. I'm glad I got to have them when I rode back through Charleston. Very friendly service, too.

However, all of the side streets have signs that say residential permit parking. We called the restaurant to ask for help with parking and the nice young lady told us where to park (which was on the side of the restaurant but where there were yellow lines). She insisted we'd be ok so we took a chance. It was a Saturday and she said they are lax with enforcement on the weekends. The service is a slow. We placed our drink order and waited for 15-20 minutes for our server to return to take our orders. We had to ask another server to take our order. Our initial server was apologetic however. It still took a very long time for our food to come out. We ordered the crab and shrimp rice, 5 honey bbq drummettes with sides of mac and cheese, cabbage and yams. Hubby ordered the fried fish fillet sandwich with fries. The food was amazing!! Seasoned well and hot. I will say that the crab rice was just ok. I don't agree with the hype. Between the parking challenges and the slow service, I'm not sure if the good food would cause me to return.

This was a whole experience. We were in Charleston Saturday night through Wednesday afternoon and…read moreBertha's is only open Wednesday through Saturday til 5pm. So we took an Uber there on our way to the airport, luggage and backpacks and all. The line was to the door. Most people get their food to go but there are a handful of tables in the dining room. We parked ourselves and our bags at one by the front wall and settled in for our fried porkchops and fried chicken, lima beans, cabbage, red rice, mac and cheese, and corn bread. And while we waited for our food, one of the kitchen staff walked around passing out free frozen punch. It was good! This was the perfect choice for our last meal in Charleston. We were in and out in 45 minutes, full and satisfied. The only thing is we are still confused about pricing. We think there was an error because somehow we paid $29 for one meal and $19 for the other. Can't be right...but we didn't have time to sort all that out. Pay it forward.

You order, they plate it, you pay and either take it to go or to sit in the small dining area. Service is very quick and efficient, and you can tell there are a lot of regulars who come here because the staff joked and laughed with them as they waited in line. Speaking of the line, it moved fast but while we were there a woman came around with a tray and offered little cups of brightly colored something. I chose red and was delighted to see it was a frozen punch, red is cherry. My friend got orange and he said it was like a mango or peach flavor. I ordered the fried chicken, with cabbage and red rice. The cabbage was absolute fire, it was so tender and delicious. The red rice was good, but a bit on the dry side. I feel like had I been there when a fresh pan was brought out it would have been a lot better. The fried chicken was perfectly cooked and had a flaky crust but it needed salt and the tables did not provide any. I would come back, there are so many other things I would love to try and this place is busy for a reason.
