For Valentine's Day this year, because we're stuck at home with this Pandemic, we ordered a special…read moreTO GO meal through the Allegheny Wine Mixer that included food prepared by Kate Romane's BRK. The meal kit came with super fun and easy to follow instructions for reheating everything. For $75, we got an antipasto snack box with cured meats and olives/pepperoncini and a small focaccia loaf with gorgonzola spread that was out of this world. I could literally eat a tub of that spread. We opened the Chianti bottle that came with the meal too and it was great with the appetizers. The box also came with these incredible garlic sage smashed beans that ate more like a fabulous over the top bean soup. Wish we had some more of that focaccia loaf to sop that up. The mixed green salad came with a light flavorful lemon dressing and I have to say I was super impressed with how FRESH the lettuce and radicchio was - it was like a bite of summer in the middle of this harsh Pittsburgh Winter we find ourselves in. The main entrée was a tray of sublime ricotta ravioli in pecorino rosemary cream sauce that, after reheating, created some crispy top layer raviolis and simmered, tender, bottom layer raviolis. It was so unbelievably good and filling! But wait, there's more! We also got a huge tub of Italian Sunday Sauce and six large meatballs that we heated in a pan. The sauce came with pieces of pepperoni and huge chunks of whole garlic floating in it. The sauce is a little on the sweeter side but it really paired so well with this savory ravioli. Dessert was this perfectly sized piece of cheesecake with fresh raspberries and blackberries. Absolutely delicious! We just loved this whole meal. It was such a welcome treat and we appreciated the finer details of the preparation and the courses. We will definitely be keeping an eye out for future offerings from BRK.

It's a hip, post industrial large room that serves for elegant dining. She has a cadre of loyal employees that have worked with her for many years, some go back at least as far as her celebrated E2 restaurant in Highland Park. They are well trained and graciously welcoming. The food is wonderful, and the formula is always locally sourced fresh ingredients. Great salads, stunning entrees, and lots of great accompaniments, such as olives, fresh veggies, and breads. Italian/Mediterranean Cuisine is her go-to style of cooking, but I feel she does everything well. So don't forget about her event space, it's for groups of 25 or more. I forgot to mention her stunning desserts. Last night she served a delicious Pot de Creme that was both gourmet and very satisfying. It doesn't get any better than this.

The menu includes savory foods (e.g., quiches, sandwiches, and pizzas), sweet foods (e.g., cakes, pies, cookies, muffins, and strudels). I was a customer here one time. An employee promptly and kindly greeted me, took my order and payment, and handed over my foods. Some indoor and outdoor seating was available, but I took my foods home. Here are my ratings for them: Sour-cream apple pie - 3.5 stars - This pie was mini-sized. I liked the crust. Neither my husband nor I liked the sour cream. We prefer plain apple. Derby pie - 4.5 stars - This mini pie contained dark chocolate and walnut. I liked the crust and the filling. Pecan pie - 4.5 stars - I liked the crust and the pecan filling of this mini pie. Asparagus-Swiss quiche - 3.5 stars - I bought one slice of this quiche. It tasted alright. Snickerdoodle cookie - 4.5 stars - This snickerdoodle cookie tasted pretty good. Cinnamon roll - 4.5 stars - This cinnamon roll was a large size, and I liked the amount of cinnamon and frosting. The total price was $32.

I'm not sure if this is a corporate policy, but with this being flu season, I would think a they would take every and any step to keep not only their entire staff but their customers safe from being exposed. I have been a corporate manager in the same industry in the past and this type of management enrages me. I have also heard that are told if they are having mental or hormonal issues they should deal with them on their day off. Im not sure corporately who manages the managers but they really need to do a better job at appreciating their employees and customers and the city that has made them a possibility.

Robin at Big Catering helped me select menu items, understand quantities and prices, and confirm all details. I asked for the food to be delivered and set up (we did not need servers during the reception). The delivery arrived exactly on time, and setup was perfect. The guests enjoyed the sight and aroma of the beautiful buffet. The delicious selections encouraged people to sit and chat, and then wander back to the buffet for another helping. We received many compliments about the wonderful food. Everything was packaged sturdily. Our family was able to take very tasty leftovers home and enjoy them. I highly recommend Big Burrito for catering, and Alta Via for menu selections.

I have a very hard time liking food enough to eat at all, and I went back for different selections once I found I could actually enjoy everything! That's a really big deal to me. Open bar (although servers didn't know how to make mixed drinks and had to keep referring to the menu, then asked the guests if they were "right!") and lovely servers all around, even giving me special help for a few different reasons. EVERYONE commented on how good the food was. I'm telling everyone I know. Love you, Remo's!

That said, I already have a love-hate relationship with Soul Food. It tastes great, every bite is a a flavorful and savory journey for your tastebuds, but is it good for you? The answer is a resounding NO. This is my point, Soul Food is the worst meal for someone to eat on a regular basis. The reason? SALT, the number one cause of hypertension and the number one (or two depended on who you ask) killer of the Africanus-Americanis nationwide. Soul food should only be eaten in moderation, if ever. So if that's the case and I'm going to willingly take years off of my life then the food needs to be good. Damn good. Like sell my soul to the Devil good. Unfortunately, Roxanne's was anything but good. Thanks to my girlfriend and her relentless craving for fried chicken and macaroni and cheese, we wind up looking up this place on a Friday evening. I dial the place up and talk to a pleasant enough woman who said she was closing soon she but put my order in. I ask her the menu choices, because apparently the menu changes everyday. My sweetie ordered some baked chicken wings with a side of mac and some green beans and since pretty much everything else was cooked in pork fat or turkey, I opted for Tilapia and a double side of mac and cheese, really because that's all that's available...allegedly. We drive up to the restaurant, a small store front, tucked into a crevice on Main, next to a barbershop, we almost missed it. I applauded its quaint charm, until I stepped inside. The same woman who took my order was both the cook and taking phone and walk-in orders, meaning we had to wait a bit to ask any questions about the food. I'm not really into Tilapia, its a shitty farm raised fish of questionable quality, but according to the woman on the phone it was the only fish they had at the time...or so she said. When we got there we see a whole menu of items which she did not say were available, one being salmon which would of been my go to choice, but since I called in the Tilapia I was stuck with it. Fine, I was a little pissed but I went with it, supporting small business and all. Now I'm quite the stickler on how my food is prepared and what it contains and I get it, its not a fancy spot but I was turned off by how the food was cooked. No gloves being used or hairnets while the cook was handling the phone, then going to the cash register, handling money, the phone only to go back to cooking. We finally get our food, in styrofoam (another pet peeve) I pay and as I hand back the receipt, I get some request for us to "check in on Facebook." and a not really sincere but more of a "fuck you, go away, goodbye" attitude with corresponding laughter to a cohort (who should of been back there helping instead of cackling in the front) which immediately made me feel like I was being hoodwinked. "Don't worry I won't be back." I muttered to myself while leaving, I get home and open my container of food to validate my concerns and Viola! Much to my surprise (THIS IS SARCASM), the food sucked. Everything was too salty, everything, the fish, the macaroni, the green beans. How could someone eat this on the regular and not eventually die of a stroke. Like I said earlier, if your going to sell high blood pressure and diabetes to people in the form of food at least make it consistently good and don't have an attitude when people come to give yo money. I could of made everything at home and it would of tasted much better and would of been way healthier with the same 20 dollars I spent. Message: Just because you are Black and full of sass does not mean your candied yams are any damn good.
