From having been to one eyelash extension expert to another in such a short period of time, I've seen and have been somewhat educated and familiarized with a few techniques and tools now used by specialists. When I found out that Emiko did bottom lash extensions, I was overjoyed and was even more pleased because she was in my area. During my consultation, I mentioned that I just previously had top eyelash extensions put on so she went ahead and took a look at the job. Shocked at knowing that a few of my lashes were glued to one extension, I knew that there was some damage made. I allowed her to remove some of them (an extra 20 bucks-such a waste of money and I hate that), so she could apply one extension to one eyelash. Everyone there was very kind and welcoming making my visit an amazing one. Be careful - she might try to overcharge you! She overcharged me twice (without asking my permission). The 2nd time I protested, she challenged me, but I was insistent that she was wrong not to ask my permission (she wanted $60 more for extra lashes that I never asked for!). It was difficult for me to decipher if our miscommunication was because of the language barrier, but since I'm a language teacher and she's a businesswoman, I think not. Ladies beware, I rate Eyelash by Emiko zero out of five stars. Based on good yelp reviews, I made an appointment to see Emiko for a refill at 3:30 on a Friday afternoon, during our initial phone conversation, she sounded all professional. At 3:00pm on the appointment date, while I was driving to her place, she left a disoriented message on my voice mail saying she was not sure what time our appointment was, wow, I called her a minute later, no one picked up the phone, I left two messages asking her to call me back to confirm the 3:30, she never did, I was appalled at her unprofessionalism. At past 3:30, she finally called, all she has to say was just "she is very sorry", yes I agree and she should be; the point is, if she was not sure what time the appointment was, call to verify the first thing in the morning or the day before, not 30 minutes prior, and pick up the phone when the client calls right back. This is a mom and pop shop and Emiko is a very caring expert. She took her time and explained everything to me. It was my first time getting eyelash extensions so I don't really have the ability to compare her to anyone else. Overall I thought they looked cute but I wasn't blown away. I have very unruly curly/not curly eyelashes so after a few days the extensions were all caught up in my natural lashes and looked messy. I would need to put mascara on every day in order for them to look good. Kind of defeats the purpose of having the extensions I think. Anyway, it's two weeks later and they have already fallen off. I searched Yelp and bookmarked three places who I would like to talk to about eyelash extensions. I liked Emiko's location and the reviews she received on Yelp. When I called, I liked that she wanted to do a free consultation so we could discuss the options available, especially since I am new to this service. She provided a questionnaire for me to complete about my eyes and make up habits. She took time to understand that I wanted a natural look, I wanted to simplify my make up routine and be free from mascara. I am 58 yrs old and am moving toward less is more. She prepared me well for what to expect for results and what other people would or would not notice. I met with her the same day at lunch for the consult and I decided I wanted to do a trial of a natural look (about 20 lashes each eye). Because I mentioned I saw her good reviews on Yelp, she gave me extra lashes for free as a new customer. It all took about 60 min. All of this for $65 + tip. I expect to return for touch up in 3 weeks, if I follow the care instructions! She has a nice care instruction sheet and provided her cell # in case I had any problems or questions. **UPDATED REVIEW 09.13.2012** I still love Emiko! And the 4 stars are for her technique & warm personality. This is an updated review after 2 months from the first time I had my lash extension and have done a 35 lashes (each eye) & full lash (about 60 on each eye). My long lashes have all fallen out! And why wouldn't they? I had total of about 95 lashes done on each eye. The false eyelashes are all out and of course each time they fall off they take a natural lash with it. So you can imagine...... Just like to put out this warning to all fellow yelpers that this will happen. My lashes look sparse now. Beautiful eyes no more :-( ***PREVIOUS REVIEW*** I love Emiko! She is great! I went about 1.5 weeks ago for Emiko's 1st time customer welcome package. But I had to go back for refill today. I believe it is mostly my own fault because I am still not used to having extended eyelashes. I would unconsciously rub me eyes when they are itchy. But now, I have a full awareness. I had my 1st eye lash extension since last year, and I had tried 4 different salons. Emiko is one of the best. She is very patient and careful about every step. Like: I had my first extension with Emiko 6 weeks ago, and some of her lashes last till now. The texture of eyelashes were soft and natural. She was not only gentle but also fast. It only took her roughly 75 mins to finish 80 eyelashes. My eyes are sensitive type and would get red after extension. All of the salons I been cause me same problem. I'm less allergic and sensitive to Emiko's glue. (usuallly, extension would make my eyes red for 1 week, but Emiko's extension only last red eyes for 3 days. Emiko is wonderful! Honestly, I've done eyelash extensions several times before and I've always had some type of horrible issue with it. I just keep doing it because I really need it!! One of the issues I've had were my eyes would always get really teary during the application because I thought I had sensitive eyes. I'm not starting to think I've just had really terrible technicians because when I got them done by Emiko, no tears AT ALL!! She is so careful and makes great measures to assure your eyes are taken care of. Another issue I've had before was the incessant poking in the eye I would get from eyelash extensions. This is because the technician is not careful and applies the lash to several lashes and as they grow out, it causes the extension to poke your eye. Either that or the extension is placed too close to your eyelid. Emiko makes sure to apply the extension to only one lash. This is the way its supposed to be done! I've had absolutely no irritation at all!! Its so lightweight! Another gripe I've had about lash extensions was that you can always see the root where most of the glue leaves a big glob at the base of your lid. I honestly have no idea how Emiko did this but there is no glob at all!! It looks so real and natural. The best part about going to Emiko is that she actually sits down and asks you what you want exactly and tells you if its possible. She really took time for a consultation and explained everything for me. when we talked what I want my lash to look like, I was very difficult and told her "I want lots of volume and length to stand out for my upcoming trip, but my work environment is very conservative, so it can't stand out too much either" Even I was confused: Am I asking for big full lash or natural look lash? But every step of the process, she made sure to talk to me and guide me finding what I want! And she somehow pulled off an amazing wow lash but yet still natural looking. Exactly what I wanted! I followed her instruction for how to keep lashes for longer, and mine stayed on for a long time! (At 3 weeks, it started to fall off, completely gone by end of week 4) She also told me I'm not using lash curler right after looked at my lash and it is causing a damage to my lashes so that they are shorter, thinner than what they should be. She suggested I should just ditch a curler saying my lash natural have a nice curl and all I need is a right mascara applying technique which she explained to me very well! Now I'm a lash curler free for 3 months and I can tell it is fuller, thicker and longer! Emiko is so knowledgeable and helpful I can tell she truly care for her customer. When you go on vacation and you find a place that has a great deal (read: cheap) on eyelash extensions and you think to yourself, "why not?" you'll probably end up with an annoying set of lashes that look fake, poke your eyes and obscure your vision. That was me. AND of course you can't remove them yourself because that would mean pulling out most of your real eyelashes. I COULD NOT WAIT to get them off. So I was lucky to find Emiko on yelp. She was really careful and thorough in removing each eyelash and all the gunky adhesive this other place used without pulling out my real lashes. It took about an hour and afterward she showed me the difference between the type of lash (thickness and length) that they used versus what she would use on me if I were to get them done with her. I've been going to Emiko for quite some time now (almost a year) and I cannot live without my extensions! She's quick (most people take like three hours, I can get my retouches from Emiko in like half an hour-45 min), flexible, nice, and really takes care of her loyal customers. I have had eyelash extensions once before i found Emiko and all her positive reviews. I had gone to a nail shop that did eyelash extensions. I could not choose the length and the lashes they used was the 3 synthetic lashes in a set box of like 30 of them, which you can buy at Rite Aid or CVS. Long story short, this place glued them to my skin it was scratchy and unconfortable and heavy. Hella fake looking. i had to remove them the same day.. Now: I decided to try this out one more time. When i saw Emiko, she was very professional, friendly and gentle. She went through explaining how these extensions work and what types there are and also how to care for them. She understood that my last eyelash extension was horrible. She was really careful with me. I did not even feel anything at all. Almost fell asleep. less than an hr and half later. My first visit to Emiko was fantastic! She is very worm person and you feel right at home right away. The energy of her place is very soothing and calm. She is very attentive and very thorough with her examination of your lashes. She gives you a lot of options to choose from. Emiko is amazing! Our makeup artist brought her on to do eyelashes for all my bandmates for a magazine cover shoot. Since I am an esthetic RN, I attended a beauty show in Vegas. At the show I was invited to be a demo for a Japanese-owned beauty school located in Costa Mesa. I got my first set of lash extension for free, but it was horribly done! I know in the next couple days I would probably pluck my lashes out with my bare hands. They look real funky, kinky and most certainly irritating. I decided to write Emiko an email at night and ask for her professional advises after reading other yelp reviews. Emiko called me right back next morning sounded very concern. She fitted me into her very tight schedule that very same day because of the BAD BAD job needs to be removed in order to preserve my real lash. OMG I DONT WANT TO LOSE MY LASHES!!!!!!!!!! For your information, it takes 3 months for lashes to grow from zero. FIRST ENCOUNTER: I arrived at Emiko's cozy office in no time. This sweet Japanese lady came out to greet me and making sure I find a street parking. Emiko has some Japanese accent and she worries that we wouldn't understand each other fully, therefore, she asked her Japanese customer to kindly interpret for us. During consultation, I told her my story and my feeling toward Japanese extension and Emiko totally understand my fears. She encourages me to speak up for my experience by calling Altas Studio for me. Although it was a free service, it should at least not being discomfort, right? Surprisingly, Emiko knows the owner of Altas Studio and expressed my disappointment through the phone for me. I am rephrasing Emiko "You guys did a real bad job, but I will fix it for you guys this time, please brush up your skills, you are putting this Japanese-well-known service down." Enough of that crap, on to the actual removal of my lash. Emiko asked me if she could take pictures of my lashes and I agreed. She adjusts the bed carefully to make sure I am resting comfortably, put on some eye masks and start to work her magic. Emiko found that my left eye has less lashes in the middle because of rubbing and too much glue. She explains each step from time to time by taking photos so that I understand each and every part of her action (the non-acetone glue-remover that smells like rose really impressed me). After about 20 mins, the evil looking fake lashes are gone and I now see my original lash!! Emiko shows me that only one real lash came off and the rest are nicely attached, "You see, NO DAMAGE!" said Emiko. Compare to other places, it might be slightly more expensive for the removal at Emiko's, but trust me on this one, ITS WORTH THE PRICE! SECOND ENCOUNTER: Emiko scheduled me later that week for a welcoming full set. Not only she wants my lashes to look naturally gorgeous and also wants to win back the trust that I have loss from Altas Studio for Japanese lash extension. This time, I feel Emiko's delicate hands moving over my head without putting any weight on me. And then...... I fell asleep. YEAH it was that relaxing girls! I wake up with OH MY freak'n GOD; lashes like it grow from my own lash line but two times longer in length. I couldn't stop looking into the mirror~ Have you used Lastisse before? My lashes now look like I've been using Lastisse forever, but in 30 mins. Word of advice, Emiko is not someone that you walk-in on a bored day to get lashes done, give her at least 2 weeks in advance. I decided that my very first Yelp review would be for Emiko, the sweetest lady ever! I've never gotten eyelash extensions before, and decided to book an appointment with Emiko after the great reviews I read about her on Yelp. Street parking was easy and readily available. I walked into Emiko's office (she has a room rented out in this office building) and was greeted by a cute and smiling Emiko. I told her that it was my very first time getting extensions and she was very understanding and thorough at explaining the whole process to me. She listens carefully to what kind of look you are going for and also works with your budget. I also expressed my concern that I wouldn't be able to get extensions because of my "fatty eyelids". LOL...I call them "fatty eyelids" because I'm Korean with single eyelids that push my eyelashes downwards. Emiko wasn't sure if I could rock the extensions either because of this, but she was very positive and said to just give it a try. I'm sooo glad I did because they turned out GREAT. Emiko was explaining how she glued on the individual eyelashes underneath my own eyelashes to give them a lift. The whole process took about an hour. She turns on soft, soothing music and also wraps you up in a blankie to make sure you're as comfortable as possible. The extensions actually gave me a slight double eyelid as well :) The next day I got sooo many compliments from everyone at school and work. They actually make a BIG difference! I think my first eyelash fell off in about 3 weeks and all of them completely fell out in 5-6 weeks, but honestly, I could have taken better care of them. However, I think those fears were totally unfounded and I was incredibly pleased with the job Emiko did. Scheduling was super easy and she took me on very short notice. Re: the lashes. I explained to Emiko that I had previously had a full-set done elsewhere and loved the look, but absolutely hated the way they felt (very, very heavy on my eyelids). I explained I wanted a very natural and full look. I essentially took a short nap while she did the application and was so impressed with the outcome. My lashes looked amazing, but still very natural. I followed her upkeep/maintenance instructions and was able to hang on to the lashes for five weeks. I've always wanted to try eyelash extension, but was always skeptical about who to go to. I was searching on google for eyelash extension and Eyelash by Emiko came up. I read some of the reviews and for some reason I felt confident that this is the lady I am going to have my first eyelash extension with..... I love it! Definitely going back for more! Emiko is wonderful like all the other reviewers said. Gentle and attentive, very careful. I love the private setting of her studio, not all the noise from a salon or spa. I also prefer the same technician than many different ones in other places. Great prices! I highly reccommend to at least give her a try if you are looking for eyelash extension! I don't wear mascara any more, which save so much time for me getting ready to go out.
