My wife had an appointment for her yearly exam. First they switched her doctor with out telling her, then they changed her $185 when her bill should have been $40. Two weeks later she got another bill for $ 165. When I tryed to contact them it took me two days to talk to someone in billing who said $40 was the correct charge and would get it corrected and someone would call me by the end of the day to refund the over payment. I never got a call back and I am still trying to get my refund. Terrible customer service No one ever calls back. I scheduled an appt. because after cataract surgery in Aug. in Va, I was experiencing floaters and cobwebs. I saw Dr. Epps and after my lengthy and extensive exam, I felt dismissed. He casually commented that, yes, I had floaters and cobwebs and told me to expect to live with it. He handed me a pamphlet, and I was on my way. Here is why I am writing this negative review. I went onto their website and discovered that Dr. Epps is NOT EVEN a Dr. of Optometry BUT a Dr. of OSTEOPATHY!!!!. I asked to see an Opthomologist and this is what I got! I have spent the last 4 mos. suffering and I feel scammed. I am so angry and they will be hearing from me on Mon. My mistake was not checking out my Dr. THAT will never happen again. read more

First, the assistants obviously don't know what they're doing. Their tests are administered dangerously and could hurt your eyes. Second, no matter what mistake the doctor made (no matter if what you said was misheard or forgotten or not) they act like it's your fault. You can't get anything corrected without another exam, no matter what. Profits over people. They only see you as dollar signs. Believe the bad reviews, they're correct. read more

Dr. Tammaro and all his staff from receptionists on up were kind, caring and professional. I have never received such wonderful treatment as I did at the Eye Center. The office is clean and ran efficiently. It is definitely a team effort that put this patient at ease and a wonderful experience. I went for my yearly visit, new place since I moved from South Florida. Dr. Epps was great as was his assistant. Asked Dr. Epps for my prescription, as I travel and past experience has taught me, this is good to have. Dr.Epps said no problem, ask out front Optical area. Well.....they would not give me my prescription. What!!! It's part of my medical records. I would think I have a right to know MY medical record results. The physician I use there is pretty terrific. Thorough and is very helpful. The office plays Christian music which is nice but the outreach regarding billing is anything but. I was in several times to correct an issue. I used them despite most of the coverage is out of pocket with minimal reimbursement because they are not in my plan however I would rather have someone I trust and pay for it than have full payments covered with someone that is just so so Every time I have visited this physician, I have paid my portion of the bill. Sometimes, the office staff tells me there is not balance due, as was the last time I was in the office. But I stand there with credit card in hand to pay at each and every visit. You see, I pay my bills alsways. Last week I received the EOB from my insurance company that said I had a balance due of 99.00. It is summer, I travel. Yesterday I received a message from this office saying that "this was the last time they were calling me to take care of my balance"? Either the office staff have no idea how to research payments due or there are other issues with this office because I am certainly not avoiding paying my balance that I just learned I had. To leave a sarcastic message like that when I have been seeing the physician consistently and PAYING MY BILL EVERY TIME I am there and had just received the EOB last week is completely unacceptable-suspect actually. I have one more visit with this MD in August and then I will find another MD that runs their business with appropriate customer service-which is definatley an issue there. read more

I'm a new patient here and today was my first visit. I didn't see the reviews until yesterday and almost cancelled my appointment because of them. I was referred here by my regular eye doctor. I have not waited long at all, everyone has been extremely sweet and courteous to me. Malynda in particular was so sweet, warm, and welcoming. She has excellent customer service skills and those I dealt with at the front desk were all wonderful too. years ago I was diagnosed by them with glaucoma. I now live in south Carolina and was told by the eye drs up here that I never had glaucoma! they kept me on drops and performed test on me every six months or so. I had to pay 90.00 deductible each time. I found out there was an eye Dr in a myrtle beach who lost his license who was doing the same thing. get a second opinion no matter what they tell you. read more

IF you like to wait, then you found a great place. My mother is a patient here and I drive her. I've been here several times with her. EVERYTIME, we are kept waiting. The waiting in the waiting room before usually isn't too bad. But once they get you into one of the exam rooms, the waiting becomes terrible. The last time, we had an 8:15 appointment. We waited about 10 minutes and then sent to the "Room of Waiting". We were in there for about 40 minutes. Finally a staff member comes into the room and asked us politely to move to another room. I complained about the waiting. She said that we were next. So off the next room of pain. We waited another 20 minutes. Still no doctor. Finally I went out to the hall and found another staff member. I voiced my complaint. I told her that I was giving the doctor 5 minutes or we were leaving. In just under 4 minutes the doctor showed up. He spent about 7 minutes with us and gave the cheery "See you next year!" speech before we left. read more

I visited the Eye Center in January and they charged me $80 even though my insurance covered everything. They did not check to see what my insurance covered. They just said most insurance does not cover refraction or office visits. After my insurance paid, I was told in February that they would refund my money as soon as they were paid by the insurance company. In April, I still had not been paid and could not contact the billing department. Each time I tried to call I received a message that they could not take my call at this time. The lady who performed the refraction only had me try two lenses and asked which was better. After I answered she stopped but I could not see very good through either one of them. The doctor had to do another refraction. I'm not complaining about the doctor but the rest of the office is terrible. read more

It has been 2 years that me and my husband use the Eye Center. Dr. Nelligan never told me that the refraction test would not be paid by medicare or Federal blue cross blue shield. I have 6th generation crystal lenses, and my visionis 2020, why in the world would I need a refraction test anyway? To me it appears the Eye Center is out to make money and does not care about the customer. The last time my husband went to see Dr. Nelligan on an annual evaluation being that he only has one eye to see with, Dr. Nelligan said to him upon entering the room "what seems to be the problem and what can I do for you". Apparently he doesn't even read the chart to see that it is an annual review. How ridiculous! "So now I have to pay $35 out of my pocket even though I am covered under Medicare and Federal Blue Cross. I have always had good experiences with Dr Thompson and his staff. This practice has really grown over the past few years. Especially with Covid I feel wait times have increased. Doctors may be booking too many people into their day because the wait for me has not been in the waiting room but once I am brought back to the exam room. All of the procedures have been excellent and I would not want to go anywhere else. But, I do understand the frustration with wait times. Dr Thompson is trying to open up some offices to help to spread out the patient load for this office. Just my two cents. read more

This was the worst eye dr experience in my 60 plus years. They did eye test with varoius results..they were far off the 1st test they did and could offer no explanation. I provided notes they failed to keep notes that 1st test was with contact lenses. 2nd 3rd no contacts in eyes for hours prior to test.the result were different. I went to other dr showed what third party results were. The Dr was rude and ego driven even saying it must be me. I asked why would i do such a thing. The only complaint I have with the Eye Center of St. Augustine is one of their front office staff members. Her name is Bonnie and she is ABSOLUTELYone of the worst beings I have ever had the displeasure of speaking with on two occasions! Firstly, I wish to say that Dr. Nelligan was excellent and his surgery team exemplary! On two occasions, I had call the eye center and Bonnie attended both my calls. She was rude, condescending, implied by her speech that I lacked cognitive skills and impatient. She hung up on me twice! Being the first "voice" of a business a potential patient speaks with, she has horrendous manners! They either need to take her to work where she doesn't interact with patients or fire her!! I had an annual exam 5/11/2023, the doctor (D'Augustino) was not happy with the girl who does basically all the exam, before he enters. He said he could not complete the exam and I would have to come back, now I had already been at the office 90 minutes after driving 2 hours, came back and still the exam couldn't be completed, as he wanted me to try new contacts and they didn't have the trials in stock. Came back several weeks later, kwith an appt. and was told the office still didn't have them. NO one called me to inform me not to come! Mind you this is 2 hours each way I am driving. Came again, and honestly, I just wanted my prescriptions to get my new glasses and contacts. The doctor still wasn't sure about my script. I took what they had the glass and maybe contact script? Well, the script evidently was NOT right still. HE gave me a script for the left eye which was the script from 4 years prior? I have both, and still do NOT see clearly. NEXT problem billing, I paid my copay at the first appt, OH, and by the way my doctor said I would not be billed for any more appts, pertaining to this annual check up. Well, MY insurance company has paid and I paid copay, and I keep getting calls, which I have responded to each and every time, that I owe money. They are getting nastier with each call. I finally went on their live chat to get an email address to respond to, and that took awhile. But, I have sent a copy of my EOB's to show them I owe 0.00. I would not refer ANYONE to this Eye Center. NO ONE knows what the other is doing, Evidently, notes in patients charts are not read, nor do they look back on previous years at your history and Scripts. They need to get an office manager to run things, because evidently, who ever is running it, has their mind on other things. And I honestly feel that 6 months out, knowing I need to get another appt to get glasses and contacts so I CAN see correctly after spending hundreds of Dollars needlessly, and the billing, which is a different entity, can't do their jobs correctly either. BEWARE, look to another Eye Center, not this one. read more

Front desk is horrible - they don't answer the phone during normal business hours (the 2 or 3 women behind the desk just let the phone ring and kept talking to each other and started visiting (very loudly) with people who accompanied patients). Then I waited in the waiting room for 45 minutes and then for another 45 minutes in a tiny exam room for Dr. Hund. When I nicely told them I needed to be somewhere, the back office staff simply told me that they didn't know when he would get to me (no one even tried to check). I left without seeing the doctor. I won't be back (and I had been going there for probably 20 years...). They really let you know that they don't give a damn. read more

I will start with Dr Hund was fantastic, very patient and helped us understand the procedure with cataract surgery. BUT that is where the fantastic stopped. We sat with the "finance person" so we would know what we had to pay out of pocket. All of which was due up front. After the procedure, we began to receive bills, one after another. I made numerous attempts to speak with someone, they finally called me back. They couldn't explain, they said we are not sure but someone will call you back. It has now been over a year and today we received yet another bill, which we are trying to get an answer for but a women we talked to today said "sometimes things take a long time". (plus looks like from the previous amount they added another 35 dollars). They couldn't explain that either. WARNING, FIND SOMEONE ELSE AND IF ITS TOO LATE, CHECK YOUR BILLS VERY WELL. read more

I called before going there and was told that the most I would be billed was $55 for a contact refraction/examination. I don't have vision insurance but I do have health insurance and I was told they bill the exam as medical and that is what I would pay out of pocket. I had the exam and got my trial contacts. My vision was not very good through them so I went back in for what they called an "rx check". At that time I was told I owe an additional $130 for the original appointment and that the doctor was going to bill an additional $100 for the "rx check" visit. I have called three times to ask the office manager to call me and it's been a week and he hasn't called. I thought the doctors I saw there seemed competent and one was even friendly, but WATCH OUT for their billing practices. Very shady and they flat out lied about the cost of services. read more

Long waits, inexperienced tech's, hard sell on expensive add-ons to cataract surgery, lack of pre-surgery info. I could go on. This place operates assembly-line surgery, with the day's cataract patients [about 10 when I was there] lined up on gurneys and a surgeon operating on them as they are wheeled in. In the surgery waiting area I heard one of the techs ask another, "Is he all right?". I'm mainly mad at myself for ignoring all the red flags-- my outcome was not good. It wasn't just one of the possible "things that can happen" they make you sign off on, but a result of the flaws in their assembly line system. read more

Be very careful when paying any amount due from you to these people. They will try to collect money you do not owe. Always go over you claims with you insurance company to make sure you are only paying the the amount you really owe. And make sure you are seeing an opthamologist and not an optomotrist.
