I'm sharing my experience as a long-term client. I brought my dog here for approximately three years, starting when he was about six months old. From early on, it was known that he had a congenital eye condition affecting both eyes. At his initial visit, when he was about six months old, I was told that he would develop glaucoma and that eye removal would eventually be necessary. I brought him in every three to four months for eye pressure checks and was prescribed multiple prescription eye drops, which were adjusted and increased over time. I was consistently told that his pressures were elevating. At later visits, glaucoma was discussed as an established diagnosis. Eventually, I was told that one eye's pressure was too high and that it would need to be removed. I was also advised to remove the other eye at the same time, even though that eye was still in a normal pressure range and both eyes were still functional. Cost efficiency related to anesthesia was mentioned, and I was told that dogs generally adapt well to blindness and that owners tend to be more upset than the animals themselves. As a pet owner, the thought of removing one eye was already extremely difficult. Being advised to remove both eyes and permanently blind my dog, despite the fact that he was not showing signs of pain, could see well, and his eyes appeared fine to me, did not feel right. I chose to seek a second opinion from another veterinary ophthalmologist, who told me clearly that my dog does not have glaucoma. He explained that my dog's elevated eye pressure is consistent with his congenital eye condition, that he was not even in pain, and that his eyes otherwise appeared stable. It has now been nearly a year since that consultation. Since that time, my dog has not been on glaucoma medication and has not needed eye removal. His eyes no longer appear irritated, he scratches them far less than he did when he was on the eye drops, and he seems noticeably more comfortable overall. His vision has remained intact, and he is able to catch balls in the air, which he was not able to do before. I'm grateful that I sought another opinion before making a permanent decision. Despite my dog's known medical history and the fact that he was not in pain and could still see perfectly fine, irreversible recommendations were still made. Based on my experience, I would advise pet owners to seek a second opinion or consider avoiding this practice altogether when facing serious or irreversible recommendations. read more

We had a great experience at Eye Care For Animals with Dr Gaerig! We were seeking a second opinion, after seeing another veterinary ophthalmologist, and feeling like the examination and explanation were too cursory. Dr. Gaerig came into the exam room, fully knowledgeable about our dog's past medical history, gave him such a warm greeting, and then explained the entire exam, her findings, and her recommendations in detail. She completely put us, and our dog at ease. Although the management is the same as the initial ophthalmologist, the care is much better at Eye Care. read more

Dr. Gaerig did such a great job with my kitty Mustang yesterday. Mustang developed a very serious corneal ulcer in his right eye. We left with a variety of medications, which didn't surprise me because I know how tricky cat eyes are, but I have faith that we are on the right track to healing. I am pretty sure Mustang already looks better this morning. Sheldon was great at the front desk doing intake and check out, which is particularly difficult during the the pandemic. This was the first time I was not in the facility, nor did I meet the doctor taking care of my cat, but I felt good and completely comfortable with everything yesterday with Dr. Gaerig and Eye Care for Animals. I haven't been to Eye Care For Animals since my last review in 2016, but it is still relevant to my previous review. I took my cat into another vet, a non-eye specific vet and they observed her eye condition as well. This vet asked if he could run a test to test for something he suspected it might be. He was right. My cat has herpes in her eyes. It's not curable, but can be treated with some medicines. It seemed like this was a pretty obvious test to run and he was right. He was wondering how that never got caught before. Seriously wondering how the eye-specific veterinarians didn't test for this, but had us spend thousands of dollars over multiple visits and different medications. Again, I can't speak to how good this vet is if they know your diagnosis, but I sure spent thousands of dollars I don't have for nothing. read more

Dr Lin and Dr Gaerig were empathetic and cared about my dog. They gave great advice and compassion, and were very thorough with my dog. We ultimately put him to sleep, but could not be more at peace with my decision thanks to the help of Dr Gaerig. It's been just over a year since my dog, Glenn, had his cataract surgery. They were quite mild when I adopted him at 13, but months later they rapidly matured, leaving him completely blind and terrified. Dr. Gearig performed a state of the art phaecoemulsification and was able to place a lens in one eye (the other eye was too unstable for that procedure). Five stars to Dr. Gaerig and staff for repairing my guy, and ten giant stars for dealing with my hysteria. So Glenn will never be able to drive a car or read a newspaper, but I'm totally fine with that. He was a terrible driver anyway. read more

I cannot say enough good things about this animal optical practice. We have an Italian Greyhound who had an emergency eye problem. Our primary vet referred us to Eye Care for Animals. They were able to work us in, and see her very quickly. The Veterinarians and support staff were all very caring, and professional. Eye Care for or Animals is not just any hospital but a team of "Diplomates" who studied 4-8 years beyond veterinary School and are skilled specialists in animal eye care, surgery and consulting. I know because I read about this in their office on the wall frame...I felt reassured even more my beloved dog Butter was in the hands of a guru. This is my second visit for my dog. The 1st time was when she scratched her eyeball on a shrub while racing through a yard. They saw her and worked on her without anesthetic to treat her eyeball wound and give her medicine. You have to book well in advance and call for emergencies. Visit #2 today because my shihtzu-maltese Butter has a growth on her eyelid. I love my dog and teared up as I had to leave her- gave her fair well smooches and told her I loved her. They removed it surgically and she came through beautifully. They called right away to let me know surgery was over and talk about aftercare. Very compassionate place. It is a peaceful atmosphere done in quiet colors, slate floors, a bathroom to use and on 2nd floor. There is an elevator. There is parking in the lot but only about 10 spaces and there is a lot guard who steps out to ensure you park correctly so that no space is wasted, see why you are there, and open doors for you. Street parking is tight...get there early. She even came out to the curb when she saw me awaiting a place to park from the street. She waived me in. Really nice! They have a pet clean up station in the lot. read more

I brought my dog in on an emergency...wait and they will fit you in... type appointment. I waited from 11:30 to almost 2:30 and was eventually seen. I knew that the doctor was in surgery and that those don't always go as expected, time-wise,; I was just grateful they were willing to work me into the doctors full schedule. I loved my waiting time because I spent it reading all the great books there (I particularly loved the cat behavior book). The staff and doctor were wonderful, kind and easy to talk to. The service they provided me came from their heart and I am now awaiting my dog's recovery. I am very hopeful. read more

I'm with fellow reviewer Barb S. on this one -- Dr. Nancy Park ruined any chance that Eye Care for Animals had of ever receiving my business. Ever. Again. We took our two y/o Bouvier to Eye Care for Animals against the advice of two friends who had brought their Boston Terrier to the office. Our primary care veterinarian recommended this place, & we love her (see: Dr. Manrique at South Loop Animal Hospital), so we decided to trust her. In retrospect, we should have listened to our friends, & we also should have done more extensive research before coming here. This is one of the only -- if not THE only -- animal eye specialty facilities in the city of Chicago. In other words, unless you want to drive to the burbs, you're stuck here. Anyway -- so, we decide to follow Dr. Manrique's orders & schedule our appointment with ECA. We show up 15 minutes before our scheduled appointment to fill out paperwork. There are two other dogs in the waiting room. We waited 30 minutes past our appointment time before going in to our room. Okay, fine -- but I'm still annoyed. Dr. Park comes in & starts to examine our dog. She pokes, she prods, she talks one million miles an hour & rambles off things like "definitely a cataract" ... "blind within a month" ... "your breeder will be so upset" & the icing on the cake: "you need to schedule surgery immediately." In between all of us this, my boyfriend & I are trying to ask Dr. Park questions, such as "Why would a young dog get a cataract?" & "Are there alternatives to surgery?" or "What about her other eye?" Dr. Park basically ignored all of those questions & just continued to insist that we schedule the lens replacement surgery immediately. At this point steam is coming out of my ears because as a mother to a fur baby AND a customer, I want the vet to answer my questions. But in an effort to escape this prison as quickly as possible, I ask: "When is your earliest availability for surgery?" Here's the best part of the story... Dr. Park responds with: "Well, I'm moving to LA tomorrow, so you'll be assigned to a different doctor." Our final bill was $350.00 for a cataract/sight assessment. We later took our dog to an OUT OF STATE facility that cost half the price & was recommended by our breeder, & where we were told to provide the phone number for ECA because the vet wants to call Dr. Park personally & find out exactly what was so severe in our dog's eye that required surgery immediately. Our second opinion has told us to wait on surgery because her eye has stabilized & she still has some sight in it. Don't go here unless you want to get ripped off, scolded, scared for your dog's health, or better yet -- seen by a doctor who won't even be available in the future. read more

We were referred here by our vet. Not knowing that an eye specialist for cats even exists, I was very wary of how much the visit would cost and how quickly we would be seen. But anything to get my Eloise feeling better. I called on a Friday morning and was able to get a same-day appointment thanks to a cancellation. I was very thankful that they were able to get me in. Although I did wait about a half hour past appointment time before we were actually seen, again, very thankful to be seen at all! While we waited for the doctor to come into the exam room, the tech/assistant was very caring and even gave my kitty a treat as she was very shaky and scared. It was her first time traveling in a car for more than 5 minutes, and her first time seeing anyone other than our regular vet so I think it was a scary experience for her, but I felt like the staff here took great care of her. Dr. Gaerig was thorough but gentle, and made sure I completely understood my cats illness and the course of treatment. She answered all of my questions thoroughly, and was genuinely helpful. I could tell she is passionate and very knowledgable in the field of small animal opthamology. Cost of the visit (just exam) was $113 although I'm sure it can get real pricy if you need tests done or to purchase medication. We needed to purchase medication from a compounding pharmacy, which the staff were also quick to call in. Overall very pleased with our experience! read more

This place is great! I have taken my senior dog here a few times and Dr. Debra Agapito is just the best. Staff is friendly overall. I love having this place in the city. It is a bit hectic first thin gin the morning as this is the same building as Emergency Care. You have the emergency pets from the night before being checked out as the Eye Care appointments begin. Overall not a big deal as long as you look at the desk staff's shirt (blue for er and tan for eye care) before you talk to them to make sure you are asking the right person the right question. read more

I have a 3 year old shih tzu who has been having eye irritation for over a year now. I cannot count how many times I took Gizmo to the vet for this issue. We finally got a referral from our vet at Jewell Animal Hospital for Gizmo to get checked out by Dr. Parks. I'm glad Dr. Parks was able to treat my little guy! Gizmo is like a new dog since he had his procedure. Giz had a lot of tiny hairs on his inner eyelid causing discomfort and an eye ulcer. He was miserable before having the surgery done. The cost was pretty high but it was a high tech procedure. The inner eyelash problem runs in shih tzus and bulldogs. Everyone at Eye Care for Animals is great and I highly recommend them. This practice thinks I'm just going to hand over my dog and the doctor will call. The doctor can put on her mask and stand 6 feet or even 12 feet away to talk after they want $250 for appointment. You can go into nursing homes and hospitals vaccinated wearing masks but can't talk to a vet at this location. I've found a place that understands importance of vets talking with owners and owners being with pets during stressful times. read more

Sadie our dog had a fungal infection in her lungs that eventually traveled into her eyes. VCA Animal Hospital referred us to here and I couldn't be more thankful. Dr. Nancy Park was great from the beginning! Her bedside manner is wonderful. She placed Sadie on a regime of meds and tried her hardest to save Sadie's eyesight. Unfortunately, we weren't able to. But Dr. Park was able to keep both of Sadie's eyes intact. I have no complaints about the front desk staff or techs either. They are the model of good customer service. read more

Dr. Park - and the entire tech & admin staff - are fantastic! My 12 and a half year old lab mix was referred here by our normal vet for a growth on her eyelid that had unfortunately started scratching her cornea. Dr. Park removed the eyelid growth in one visit, and then we went back so she could perform a procedure on my dog's eye to facilitate healing. The first eye surgery wasn't completely successful, so they had to do it a second time. During the initial visit, Dr. Park detailed all of the possible outcomes, including the potential need for the second eye surgery, Although it wasn't always good news, they kept me completely informed throughout the 2 months it took to get all of the issues resolved. They also seemed relatively reasonable on pricing given how many times we had to go back. All of the team members were extremely friendly and the office was flexible on scheduling appointments. In addition, they have valet service for when the parking gets crazy. I hope to never need another eye surgery for my dog, but if I do, I will certainly go back here. read more

When your senior pug with the most beautiful buggy eyes ends up needing to get one of those cute eyes removed, it is terrifying. Thank goodness for Dr. Park and the caring and skilled staff at Eye Care for Animals. Our dog recovered quickly and easily from her surgery and we were completely pleased with the level of service we received, and the amount of attention our dog received, throughout the process. When we recently adopted a blind senior pug, we scheduled a visit with Dr. Park to learn more about his eyes and she was, again, really fantastic and thorough with the exam. She actually picked up our dog and hugged him after the exam. This is one of our litmus tests for pet care providers. Anyone who can be in the same room with one of our pugs without being compelled to cuddle them does not pass the test. Eye Care for Animals, and especially Dr. Park, pass this test with flying colors. read more

I am giving this place 2-stars for a few reasons... otherwise would consider 1-star even. My main complain is not with the doctor, but the organization and business model as a whole. We saw Dr. Nancy Park against friends recommendations (we had heard that she was gung-ho for surgery from the start and that her bedside manner something to be desired) and went with an open mind. After a lightning fast exam of our dog, she concluded we would need some form of surgery and back in came the tech... normal, ok... whatever... what was NOT okay? She said, good luck, with your next doctor- I am moving to LA tomorrow. Okay Eye Care for Animals, are you freaking kidding me? You are booking first time patients with a doctors last checkup in the state. Bogus. Give me a doctor that will be around for the duration of care. Cost: First time checkup and exam was over twice the price as the same exam at the UW Vet Hospital. I will not be back, I will advise all my dog friends the same. I took my dog in for cataract surgery and now he is blind in one eye. The doctor lied to me about how bad a problem was and said a procedure could wait. I was never told about any complications that he could get they said minimal. Blindness is not minanal. I would never bring my pet there. A doctor who is not truthful is a bad doctor to say the least. read more

I was very impressed with Eye Care For Animals. The receptionist was warm as was the tech. Dr. Wasserman was very attentive and took time to make sure I understood what was going on with my cat and also made sure all of my questions were listened to and answered. Some reviews on this forum made me question coming here, though it is really the only option for pet optometry in Chicago. I can say from my experience with Doctor Wasserman that I felt assured and relieved when I walked out. They were able to diagnose and treat my cat's eyes where other vets who do not specialize in eyes were just sort of guessing. read more

Picture this: My crazy adopted Pekingese popped her eye out because she went after one of our bigger dogs. Enter: Mama Emily freaking out and sobbing not knowing what to do. We rushed her over to the ER who kept her overnight, assuring us that she would be seen in the morning. Morning comes, and I call over. They took her immediately from downstairs to check her out. I cannot thank them ENOUGH. The doctors sat and explained everything to me (I had been up all night, so not much was making sense) and took excellent care of my baby girl. They even gave her a pink ribbon for her E-Collar, which I thought was a hilariously cute touch. The techs were all fantastic and sweet, I even love the receptionist! Working with dogs, I have many clients that also use this office and every single one of us has been extremely impressed. read more

My dog has an eye infection, it's swollen and red and hurts. My vet referred me to this clinic and they said the soonest they could see me was in middle of January. They say to wait in there office until closing and then if they can squeeze me in they will. Otherwise if it is after 5 they will charge me extra fees because it is late. Earlier this year I found out my now 3 year old yorkie terrier mix, Roxy, was born with cataracts. My vet suggested Eye Care for Animals for a more thorough investigation and diagnosis. Always curious why she was anxious, nervous and had many quirky behaviors since the day we picked her up at 10 weeks old...our questions were now answered, she only had about 50% of her vision and could benefit from cataract surgery. Dr. Gaerig was Roxy's ophthalmologist and I could not be more thankful. She was compassionate, informative and eased our stresses regarding the surgery and post treatments. It took me 6 months myself to make the call to Eye Care for Animals to get the ball rolling. I had unfortunately researched online, the complications with this surgery and it scared me to put my young dog through this with the chance it would not go well. After 6 months of observing her behaviors I knew it was time to have the surgery done. Now, I will say Dr. Gaerig did tell us that the surgery was completely elective. Our dog would live a healthy life without the surgery she said but this surgery could enrich her vision, thus the quality of her life. We had it scheduled for this past August 2017. I want to mention the surgery was not 100% successful. There was a complication with one eye that required a second surgery a week later. Not ideal or planned, but Dr. Gaerig was sure to educate us on what went wrong and how she could fix what went wrong while still ensuring improved vision minus the cataracts. It was unfortunate and left me feeling somewhat discouraged but I had confidence that she would make everything alright. A week later Roxy went back in for surgery #two and it was a success. Now post the cataract surgery I want to mention the importance of managing the medications. Roxy had a total of 7 medications. Drops and pills. Drops need to be timed between other drops. Some three times a day. Pills sometimes need to be with food or without food. Cutting pills in half or quarters. My point being..it was a brain teaser that first week. I am fortunate that Roxy comes with me to my place of work, but for those of you that don't have that luxury (let's face it most do not) I can imagine it would be challenging unless taking time off from work to assure post surgery care happens a bit easier. All in all, I recommend Eye Care for Animals and Dr. Gaerig. She genuinely cared for Roxy and guided us step by step throughout the entire process which made me feel very good about her and her intentions for my dog's well-being. The surgery is expensive. For Roxy we have spent nearly $8000. She will need life long eye drops. She will require visits to Eye Care for Animals yearly. That will incur more money spent. At the end of the day it was worth it. Close to two months after surgery Roxy is thriving. She sees! Many of her nervous and quirky behaviors have disappeared or lessened incredibly. She has explored areas of our home and workplace she never did before. She likes to explore our yard like never before. It has been so exciting to see her with her new eyes. And on top of it, we can now see her beautiful brown eyes (she always had a cloudy haze over her eyes). Thank you Dr. Gaerig and team. Thank you to the following staff members as well for taking such care of our girl. Technicians Lauren and Stephanie showed incredible care and compassion for Roxy each visit. My dog is almost 19yr old and just had surgery to remove cancerous masses in her stomach and between the shoulders, I was 4 minutes late to the appointment because, she decided to pee last minute and it was very hard to get her in her carrier without hurting her and with the cone around her head. When I got to the counter to check her in, Melanie Fry, the manager, told me I was late. I explained to her why I was 4 minutes late. My poor dog was crying in pain but in spite of that she let 2 people ahead of me. When I told her how could she do that and asked to speak to her manager, she told me she was the manager! And when I asked her for her name, she did not want to give me her last name. How can I place that takes care of the well being of animals hire somebody like this? And not just that but also make her a manager? Somebody that seems to take pleasure in the pain of an old poor dog with cancer. It made my experience of this place just terrible, what a shame. Thanks goodness this place is not part of the MedVet hospital, even though is in the same building. I have been there plenty of times to see many doctors: Dr McKenzie (internal medicine) , Dr Luthy (cardiologist), Dr Jackson (surgery), Dr Chavalier and Dr Krug (dentists) and they are all top doctors with a very professional and caring staff! read more

Dr. Anna Sheehan Gaerig removed a cataract off of my dog's L eye. She gave me the option of an artificial eye for my dog's R eye,. She FUCKED up my dog's R eye by inserting an artificial eye that is HALF the size of her Left eye. I was billed an expensive fee for cosmetic surgery, an instead got MISMATCHED EYES that distorted my dog's face. NO apologies, NO remorse, from Dr Anna Sheehan Gaerig. read more

Over $200.00 to get in the door. Don't go Dr. Neal Wasserman. I spent a lot of money at the Eye Care Hospital to find out that no one takes responsibility for their actions. I just didn't trust Dr. Wasserman because of his unconcerned and quick diagnosis.... plus a lot of confusion before and after I left the office. I contacted the corporate office and they did nothing to help me after the two different diagnosis in the ONE office visit. He had my cat on med's for several months until I took her to another center. Go to Dr. Dr. Ralph Hamor @"ANIMAL EYE CONSULTANTS.com" Dr. Hamor did such a thorough consultation. I find out that she isn't going blind! No longer is she on eye drops. read more

My 8 year old dog has been mostly blind since birth due to progressive retinal atrophy. I have been taking him to Eye Care for Animals for several years now. For the most part, the techs have been very kind and good with my dog. Dr. Gerding is by far the best and most compassionate doctor there, but it is difficult to get an appointment with him. The other vets, however, have quite a God complex. Their bedside manner leaves a lot to be desired. They treat my dog like more of a chore or an experiment, showing little compassion. Nancy Park decided during one visit to perform an extremely painful procedure on my dog's eye that I am not convinced was necessary. She didn't ask if she could do it or talk to me about what she was about to do. The healing time was approximately 4 weeks during which time my dog require pain medication. It was heartbreaking to say the least. Dr. Park tried to tell me my dog needed a very painful and expensive surgery which I refused as two other doctors there have not recommended it. Even more heartbreaking was hearing her tell me that it would be cheaper to have my dogs eyes removed. I found her to be insensitive and condescending. Let's throw childish in there too. When she needed to know how much my dog weighed so that she could prescribe pain medication for the painful procedure she performed, I underestimated his weight by about 10 pounds. When my dog (who was clearly in pain while I was almost in tears) stepped on the scale, Nancy started laughing at his weight (he's only about 5 pounds overweight) like a mean girl on the playground. Childish and rude. When I confronted her about all of this on my next visit, she denied it all so she wouldn't even take responsibility for her actions. If anyone out there can recommend another eye care facility for animals, I would love to hear about it. My dog needs eye drops every day so I can't just stop taking him there but I am really done with them. read more

We received FANTASTIC SERVICE from Eye Care for Animals when our cat's eye was removed. Full story below: We took our 1-year old cat to Eye Care for Animals after spotting brown splotches in his eye. Our regular vet told us that it was probably just pigment, and that there was a very small chance that it was melanoma. Eye Care for Animals took pictures of the spots and told us to monitor them closely and come back in three months, or sooner if they looked like they were getting larger. We brought him back in about two and a half months later. The spots had definitely grown significantly in size. The doctor told us that they now definitely looked cancerous and the eye would have to be removed. We scheduled the appointment for that upcoming Friday. Eye Care for Animals was fantastic at a) providing us with a thorough and comprehensive estimate that included all follow-up appointments and medication, b) being available to talk to us about any uncertainties we had about the surgery, c) responding quickly to our inquiries. We took our cat in for the surgery and everything went as planned. They were very good about taking care of him during the day, and explained all of his necessary medications very clearly. When I brought our cat home, I had a lot of problems getting him accustomed to having a cone. The doctor talked me through all of this on the phone, and even called back the next morning to check in on how we were progressing. When an eye is removed, they send it to a lab to be analyzed. When we got the reports back, they confirmed that he had various malignant tumors in his eye, but thankfully, the cancer looked like it had not yet moved to the rest of his body. At all points in the process they explained what was going on clearly, were there to help when things were difficult, and were conscious and up front about costs. All these things contributed to us having a great experience with Eye Care for Animals. Thankfully, we don't have to ever go back, but we did have a great experience with Eye Care for Animals, and they definitely saved this kitten's life! Our vet agreed that this was the necessary next step, and the cancer would have spread to the rest of his body if we had not taken care of it when we did. read more

TERRIBLE!!! I went there about two years ago had a great experience with Dr. Park on my dogs eye surgery! This time was complete opposite! Dr. Neal Wasserman Perform the surgery however the E collar was too small and I live on the third floor so I literally would have to take it off many times a day cause it was on the last hole and could not be made any bigger, just barely fit around his neck. For all you who have experience with long term E collars you know what a hassle they are to take off, if it's not big enough to slide over the head. Especially the ones with the ackward slide through prongs that are so difficult to take off. Basically they dident want to replace it with a larger one and denied that the E collar was too small and gave me a hard time about it,instead of apologizing and being helpful and simply giving me one that fit proper they Acted as if it was a problem, and were unhelpful and in my opinion very rude. When I came to get fitted for a new one they had me waiting and waiting! Even though it was obvious that my dog was in a bad state from the surgery the day before they appeared very indifferent. I asked several times when I could get the new collar but they just kept stalling me. No rush to get him fitted for a new collar. mind you my dog just had a surgery the day before and felt awful and was whining and should have never had to of left the house that day anyway. The staff was indifferent and didn't seem to care in the least. I spent nearly $2400 there one day earlier and I wish I would've never gone there! It was an awful experience! And I was upset by the Doctor and staffs indifference to the problem of the collar, my time and mostly my dogs suffering! When the Doctor called he was arrogant and aggressive and very much interested on having me listen to his complaints rather than listening to my complaints.
