I see that this Exxon does not have the rating I think it should on Yelp. I would like to counter the overall rating with my personal experience as a patron for about a 1 1/2 years. As a broke young professional, I came to this Exxon 3 years ago after I had neglected my car's check engine light for over 8 months. Yes I know, it was stupid but with finances low I chose to put it off instead of dealing with it head first. I brought my car here solely because it was the closest service station to my apartment where I felt my car could MAYBE make it before breaking down (for the love of god my worst nightmare would be broken down in the middle of S. Washington during rush hour. What I didn't expect was the care and respect that the owner gave me. I've been shamed by mechanics before or looked down on as a naive young person. This owner was empathetic and took the time to be completely transparent. When I went home I researched the costs of labor and parts for the services he was going to provide to get my vehicle up and running again and I was honestly getting a very good deal. When I picked my car up the next day the owner then came out to give me the keys and told me that he had a daughter my age with the same car and he was going to make sure it would go for another 100k miles. I cannot tell you how much that made me feel better. Since then I have moved out of state. Since that visit I have only had to have my battery and tires replaced which for my vehicle is pretty average maintenance wise. What I can tell you is that I have made 25 500mi+ road trips this past year in the very same car that I took into this shop thinking I would be told it was a junk car. All I have to say is not only do I trust this establishment but I can easily recommend them to others due to their fair practices and general kindness to their customers. read more

The two times I've been here, the service has been absolutely top-notch. The first time, I had a screw in my tire. They got me in immediately, and were able to patch it within minutes. Last week, I went in to get a headlight replaced (no appointment) and again, service was quick. During that visit, they noticed that a different tire had low pressure, and were fast to fill it back up and to check for leaks on all four tires. I asked if I could pay for the additional care, and Christ declined, saying that he prides himself on running his business with integrity, and he felt as though it was his obligation to help me. You can tell that he genuinely cares about his work, and, furthermore, I feel as though I'm treated with dignity and respect whenever I visit. A shop could easily take advantage of me, seeing my lack of knowledge about cars, but the care given at this location will have me coming back for all of my car care needs. read more

Bottom Line: Excellent service and wonderful customer service. So, took my car there for an state inspection. Said there were five ahead of me, but that they could get it done in about fifty minutes. Service manager was extremely polite. They called me about 45 minutes later, let me know my brakes would pass, but they should be replaced soon. No high pressure sales pitch, but offered to do it on the spot. Said we had other things to do today, but would bring the car back later. They said to give them a few minutes to button it up and that I could be on my way and they would be happy to see me back when I did come back. Today, it's hard to make a living - and I don't mind if someone wants to try and sell me stuff - but they were at least professional, courteous and certainly not rude. These folks are wonderful. They're professional, helpful, patient, and kind. I always use them for my state inspection - foolishly thinking I'll be able to go across the street and have a coffee - but they're so quick I never get my coffee (this is NOT a real complaint but a compliment to how quick they are). I've used this station for years. They are also very honest about everything. If your car doesn't really need something, they'll tell you (even if your car dealer says it's a 'must have'). I think they stay in business because they are fair and honest and do exactly what they say they'll do and do it well. read more

A couple of weeks ago, I took my car to a local repair shop that estimated it would cost $180-$200 to unclog drains causing my sunroof to leak rainwater inside. After leaving the car for nearly a day, I was told the actual bill would be $650. That sounded like a scam, so I picked up the car & just happened to drive past Exxon North on my way home. Stopped by & talked to Crist, who said he could do the job for $161. He came through exactly as promised &, so far, the problem hasn't come back. It would be very easy for this to be a 5-star awesome station, but as it is, it is not very good. The good: they have a garage, it's conveniently located on the GW parkways. They have air. Crist quoted me for over $1500 worth of repairs that needed to be done in order to pass inspection and then gave me "discounts" to bring the price down to $1000. He continued on about how I wouldn't be able to find a better price, etc. I called my trusted mechanic that I have been using for years and they quoted me at $550 for ALL the repairs including tax. I have been bringing my cars here for service since we moved to Alexandria 15 years ago. Nagesh and his crew have always been great. They always explain what needs to be done and the prices are great too. I highly recommend this service station. Gas prices also generally among the best in the neighborhood. I think many of the poor reviews are confusing this station with the Exxon on the other, North, end of town - which doesn't have its own page. If I could give this station less than one star to prove a point, I would. I took my mini cooper in because the engine light was on. I was told by Nagesh that they would do the diagnostic testing on it and would let me know what the problem was. I did not know the testing would cost $135.00 going in until they had already done it. Nagesh called me back a couple of hours later and told me the camshaft sensors (2) were bad and needed to be changed. There was a temperature sensor that may be causing a problem but it could wait. I asked him what the cost would be for all of this repair. He quoted me around $850.00 without the temp sensor. I was stunned at the cost. I asked him to break the quote down and send it to me via text because the cost seemed so high. 2 Camshaft sensors = $417 Labor with a test drive, turn engine light off = $296 - really?? Diagnostic test = $135 - I had to pay this no matter what. Taxes =? Total before tax = $848 I started researching camshaft sensors for 2010 mini coopers (s) and how hard it was to replace this part. After watching youtube videos and reviewing many articles and costs online, I discovered that I could quite probably do this repair myself and save several hundred dollars. I purchased the repair manual for the car as well as 2 camshaft sensors (only because Nagesh said it needed 2). I had read that some mini coopers only have 1 camshaft sensor so I called the parts dept at a local mini dealership to find out how many sensors were in my particular car (gave the guy my Vin #) and discovered there was only 1 sensor(even though Nagesh quoted 2). I had already purchased 2 Bosch sensors and had them shipped overnight. The sensors were $23 each. I purchased the repair manual for $25. I put the part in easily in approximately 25 minutes!! If I had not pushed back on the quoted price and had not researched this myself, I would have paid approximately $700 more than what I ended up paying. I will send the 2nd sensor back. DO NOT GO TO THIS EXXON FOR CAR REPAIR unless you have money to burn. I have also purchased a diagnostic tool so I can run the diagnostic myself if I have any issues in the future. It gives diagnostic codes that are very simple to look up so I will know exactly what is going on with my car at all times. This tool was $60...well worth peace of mind and wallet! I called Nagesh to share this info with him and he said "Of course it is going to be cheaper if you do it yourself!". Really??? He clearly thought I was just another clueless woman! NOT! read more

4.5 stars. I don't normally review gas stations, in fact this is my first. But I got to thinking today, when my tire pressure light came on, about how often the head mechanic at this place, Simpy, has made my life easier. Less expensive, no. I pay $30+ for an oil change here. But that's because Simpy and her crew have cared for all of my cars over the past five years, from my SUV to my 1981 Ford pickup, Bluebell, to my new, cute Nissan Versa. They've always kicked it to me straight, never tried to sucker me in to services I didn't need. If she doesn't have a part to do the service I request, she tells me so and recommends somewhere else for me to take it, which I am always loathe to do, instead of bullshitting me and keeping my car and I apart for longer than necessary. It's hard to find a good, honest mechanic. Especially if you're a girl. I'm not a feminist or anything, but I've seen my mom get screwed over for things at shops before and my dad had to go in there and lay the smackdown. I think it's worth it to pay a little more for reliable, quick and honest service. Not five stars worth it, though. read more

Originally, I planned to write a review that at least attempted to come off more objective but after reading all the reviews confirming my terrible experience, I would just implore you never to go here. The short: They do the typical auto shop scamming. Triple the price of the part but say they aren't charging you for labor. Diagnosis one thing and then somehow realize down the road another absolutely essential part also needs to be fixed. Went here mainly because of convenient location as I work on Washington st. Needed an oil change and tire rotation. Agreed to a $59.99 special. Received a call telling me I needed fuel cleaner and rear brakes and rotors. I said no to both. When I picked up my car they handed me a bill for $74. When I disputed it, they said the extra $15 was for 2 extra quarts of oil. I refused to pay any more than the agreed upon $59. After arguing with Said and the service person (on the phone), they agreed to take the agreed upon price. Decent pump pricing, avoid any auto service. I went for a routine safety inspection. Personally, I feel having the inspection conducted by the potential service provider is a conflict of interest at best. Basically, if you look hard enough you'll find something but in my case it was legit-ish. I argue the perceivable difference between 1/8" and 1/2" based on a wiggle test. The mechanic told me my car was failing because it was out of tolerance. The repair would cost $600 plus tax plus 'shop supplies.' I took my car to my normal garage, they completed the work required, I paid for a new inspection and an oil change. The total was under $250. read more

I own a Smart car. Not everyone will even work on it. I discovered I was smelling gas. The Exxon station was very convenient for me, just a block from my office. I stoped in and ask if they could chekc it out. They told me they would. They were extremely polite, courteous and professional. They offered me a ride back to work (it was extremely cold out that day. I accepted. They contacted me to let me know what the problem was and what the cost would be. They needed to get the part and when to expect it. Long story short. They got the part when expected completed the work and called me to let me know it was ready. I recently had a stellar experience here. I went in for my annual safety inspection and the mechanic found that my two front tires were on the cusp of being faulty enough to fail. They technically weren't so my inspection passed but they were considered bad enough that they were a safety hazard. The mechanic took the time to pull the tire off, bring it where I could clearly see it in detail and show me exactly what was going on and why it is a safety hazard. I got a quote from them on replacing the two front tires. They said that replacing all 4 wasn't needed due to the good condition the rear tires were in. I called around to other local shops and the price was comparable. I ordered my tires online instead of going through them and they were totally okay with it. Doing the tire install and the alignment went smoothly too. Great service all around! read more

My 1992 Jeep had the fairly common "old age" rattle and shakes when hitting even minor potholes. That is referred to, unfortunately, as the Wrangler Death Rattle. Disconcerting, and, no doubt, dangerous. Nagash and his techs worked on the underpinnings for a few days and went far further than other garages I had approached before, to locate the joints, bearings, tie rods, and seals that had begun to give up from the test of tine, and 122,000+ miles. The truck has a new solid stance, and handles as I remember it did when I purchased it. The cost was as moderate as could be expected, but certainly worth keeping it on the road. Went there to get gas, a guy came out saying your safety inspection is up on car and it can be done straight away. So I agreed then he asked me to pop the hood and immediately started with trying to get me to do an oil change which I had just done a month ago. Started trying to sell me all sorts of things wrong with my vehicle that had nothing to do with a safety inspection Then he had the nerve to fail me on a hose on my power steering that he said was leaking and the reservoir above the hose was full of liquid and could not be leaking.How could that be? This service station is, by far, the worst I have ever been to. They are thieves! The location was very close to my office which made it convenient but believe me, I will go out of my way to avoid them in the future. First of all, they are located on Washington Street in Alexandria amongst 3 or 4 other gas/service stations. They have the most expensive gas on the street - how can they get away with it? Secondly, there is this sleezy guy that walks around trying to get money from everyone that walks in the door or anyone that even pumps gas outside. He tries to give you BOGUS coupons for service. These "coupons" are a ripoff. Do not fall in to that trap. Simpy is very nice but she is no better when it comes to taking your money. This Exxon, on two occassions, has tried to take me for $500+ dollars for work that didn't need to be done. First, they tried to tell me that I needed to replace my oil pan at a cost of approximately $600. Not true. I got a second and THIRD opinion from other places and there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with the oil pan and there is no leak. Secondly, they tried to tell me that I needed to replace my entire suspension system (I heard some rattling) at a cost of $950. Not true! I got several more opinions and the issue was very simple and only cost $100 to fix. These people are thieves and they will rip you off any chance they get. But I had a bad experience just trying to pump gas, and I think it is worth a report. I was minding my own business at the pump. An attendant came over for no apparent reason and gave me a high pressure sales pitch for an expensive gas additive. He was extremely persistent and I was uncomfortable. I ended up buying it, mostly to get him to back off. Another woman has made a similar report in a report on another site, though with her it was for a "paid" tire inflation. I used to stop every morning for a drink for myself and coworkers. I bet I used to spend fifty bucks a week there until they pulled the oil change scam on me. I haven't been back and never will. They told me that the extra charges were because my brand new car needed a part, and then when I argued that they said it needed more oil than they thought, but my car can't even hold the amount they said that they put in. I went there for an inspection because my normal place was closed. They told me that my left headlight wasn't pointed correctly and that they couldn't pass me until it is adjusted. So I had them adjust it, it took 45 minutes, and they charged me $50. I am with the other commenter that it's an inherent conflict of interest to have inspections done by people who also do repairs. They do all of my service on my car while I am at work. There are a few Exxon stations on Washington and I think some of these reviews are for the other. Took my car in for a basic oil change and I brought my own oil. The guy at the register quoted me $25 to change the oil. At pick up, the bill is $35 with extra charges for hazmat/parts and taxes... I took my car to this shop to get an oil change because it was close to my work. My car is a 2015 and they said I needed front brakes shoes/rotors and my rear drum brakes needed to be cleaned. $425 for front brakes and $125 to clean rear, extremely HIGH PRICE! I had recently passed inspection and this shop said there is enough life on the shoes to pass inspection but only 15% life left and I shouldn't delay. I declined and took my car to the dealer. The dealer said there was nothing wrong with my brakes and my front shoes were like new. No charge. This station should be ashamed and under investigation for trying to take advantage of people for services they do not need. UPDATE! I have since taken my car to my trusted hometown mechanic and told him what happened with Tony. They reinspected all my fluids and determined they were all fine. Further, they did a full brake inspection and noted there was nothing wrong with them. They also checked my shocks and found those to be perfectly fine as well. Basically, there is NOTHING wrong with my car and Tony thought he could make some easy money by telling me that my fluids, brakes and shocks all needed to be replaced. I took my car to this station on two occasions.THE FIRST WAS FOR THE ANNUAL INSPECTIO. I was told they could not pass my car un less I was prepared to spend 830 dollars for major repairs. I declined and took the car to another station who approved it for the cost of the inspection. The second time I took the car in for a tune up and was told I needed an estimated 1100 dollars of repairs. I have had several problems with both my Saturn and Pilot that this place has satisfied us above and beyond...they have been conscious to our needs and have been economical and have worked with us as though we were special to them.
