Our first dinner out was to Extra Virgin after hearing that it was the new restaurant of the former Zozo's chef. They did not disappoint. The atmosphere was lovely, despite a less-than-ideal downtown location. There isn't much of a view. It sits across the street from a ballpark and between the police station and the roundabout. There is no view to speak of. The best thing about the location is that it's right next to a parking lot, so that's convenient. Fortunately the food more than makes up for the location. We ordered the mussels to start and they were hands-down the best mussels I've ever eaten. The broth was thick and creamy and I wanted to pretty much drink it after we'd made short work of the mussels themselves. I ordered the pappardelle which was splendid- perfectly tender and an enormous portion. My fiance ordered the ribeye and said it was the best meal of the entire trip. I tasted it and I would have to agree. The potato gratin was particularly tasty. The staff was friendly and professional, offered great info about the menu and were overall just very pleasant. One of the best restaurants on the island. It is a mostly outdoor restaurant but wasn't too hot even in the summer. The bread is Portuguese bread served with honey butter and it is to die for. We have an appetizer of oysters from the daily special that were phenomenal. The ravioli is amazing. The broth is the best part and they spend the most time on it. This place is really amazing. I have been on countless special dinners and extravagant business dinner meetings. This restaurant tops them all. The menu is obviously created by a world class chef. The food was out of this world. The ambiance is perfect for the location and the front house is masterfully run. Never for one minute did I feel rushed or like things were backed up in the kitchen. Came here after many recommendations. It didn't disappoint. Reservations were easy. I emailed them from the beach this morning through the link on their website and they confirmed via email. Our server Abby was truly a gem- so sweet - very professional and knowledgeable. Standouts were the sausage gnocchi appetizer (heaven) and the fish of the day over risotto in a broth with corn and topped with crab. The haddock was cooked absolutely perfectly and was still crisp after being gently presented atop the broth base. My husband loved his porchetta. I would say 3.5 stars, but any chef could have a tough night. Starters began with the garlic sausage made on-site, which was really good. Contrary to the sausage, the tuna carpaccio was fair, inconsistent thickness of slices made it seem more like a crudo at times with very mild flavor. The spinach salad was really good prior to entrees where the homemade pappardelle was the winning dish. The grilled wahoo, was over cooked & dry but had good flavor served with haricot betts perfectly done. Unfortunately, the risotto was inedible, way overcooked that stayed glued to the plate. We'll try again, hoping to hit a better night. Friends had said really good when it all comes together. read more

My wife and I had the worst dinner of our 10 day trip at Virgin Bistro.We both had the Mahi Mahi special on 12/15/21.Both were in the 4-5 oz range,and both were overcooked.Our server asked "how are the first bites"we both replied with a begrudged -ok.No follow up at all.Ironically,the previous nite we dined at 18-64 in mongoose Junction,and had what we felt was a tie for best dish of the trip-the seared Ahi tuna !-EVB is SUPPOSED to be the big brother. Solid new place on STJ. I had the hand cut ribbon pasta the spinach salad. Both were great. Husband had the crispy gnocchi and the short rib. Both were great but would have loved less fat and sauce on the short rib. Thing is HUGE but 75% was fat so picking through it with the sauce and dim light (no complaint), was a tad difficult. Bar tenders were great, especially the fella from DC/originally from Maine. He was super nice, helpful and friendly in comparison to the other bartender that evening (4/2). I got mussels for a entree and it was amazing. The catch of the day was so good and the portions were all large. This is an AMAZING restaurant. It is fairly new in town. The food is delicious. The ingredients are fresh. The host, waiters and staff welcomed us warmly. We have been coming to St John for 15 years and the island has been lacking in restaurants of this caliber for years. I had the short ribs and our friends had the shrimp and crab cake entree. We shared the sausage appetizer which was also phenomenal. The desserts were to die for. Banana pudding; beyond scrumptious and bread pudding so tasty. We will definitely return later in the week.
