Just understand that if you apply online, your rate will almost double after you move in. They hide this in section 30 of their contract, and the people make no mention of this. Also, upon getting my locker, I found that someone else was in my locker and had to move out. I waited over 2 hours for this to happen. The onsite person could not assign me to another same size locker, as the 'system will not allow the change'. Deceptive practices and poorly run. While this is my experience here, I assume it is similar for all Extra Space Storage facilities. Go elsewhere. read more

DO NOT RENT HERE! Ongoing rat infestation! We leased for only a few months until our storage space was covered in rat droppings and urine. When reported they responded with being "surprised" as they hadn't had any other complaints, but talking to the front desk we immediately knew by their tone and lack of action that this was false. We moved storage locations (and companies), and subsequently we were hounded by Extra Space Storage with questions as to when we were going to empty our space even though we had paid for one last month!!! They were of no help as they didn't even offer their dumpster so we could dispose of our contaminated items. They made our lease and exit absolute hell. If you value your items, do not rent here. Also they will continue to jack up your prices once the initial discount expires. If I could give zero/negative stars I would. read more

Purchased a storage unit at auction for a very large amount of money. In the auction terms it clearly states you have 48 hours to move or sign a lease. When I got there she refused to allow me to sign a lease and forced me to remove the items within 48 hours and stated she put it in the heading of the auction. One can interpret that as "unless you sign a lease". We are the hard working people who clean out your units and you continue to treat us like TRASH. Probably because you're unhappy with your miserable low paying lives. She also stated that was storage treasures policy and I called and found out it is extra space policy. The auction is misleading and cost me thousands upon thousands in lost income due to having to shut down my online business and whatnot show. Lady was incredibly rude and wouldn't let me get a word in when I asked for clarification on the legal terms. Told me I can rent a unit a mile away at a different extra space facility for which I did..makes no damn sense since it's all corporate money. Spent 2 days moving 300 sq feet of stuff a mile away. I'm a customer just like anyone else and there's no logic for the way I was spoken to...actually it was more like an uneducated lady who has absolutely no brains. Look up my rental history and you'll see I've spent thousands upon thousands in rent with extra space storage. read more

They jack up the price within months of signing up.....beware!! I signed up for a parking spot at around $150/month. About 2 months or so later, I got a letter saying rates will now be around $240! That is over a 50% increase in less than 3 months! I would have rather they be upfront than do this bait and switch.....such dishonesty! read more

I have trusted Extra Space Storage with my possessions from 2008 and have had continual positive and professional service. When I moved in 2017, I transferred my possessions from the Deerfield Extra Space Storage to the Butterfield Road facility very close to my home. I continue to have positive and excellent customer service. The staff is very helpful with all my storage questions. The units are clean and well maintained. The gate hours are very reasonable. I'm very pleased that they keep their rental costs minimal in the few times they have had price increases. Last week, the staff helped me make a change in my rental unit - they were very helpful to me and I had an easy transfer of my possessions. After it was emptied, I was amazed that there were no bugs, no water leakage, and no evidence of mice in my unit. This facility has excellent management and they keep their property in great condition. read more

STAY AWAY! When I signed up to store my RV there was NO NOTICE to me that the $80/month was a "promotional rate" for 6 months, and that it would be going up to $160!! Who reads every word of a lease? They need to make it clear to you up front. These are BAIT AND SWITCH TACTICS. There are cheaper places to store your vehicle! Better Business Bureau is next! read more

Bait and switch! They tried to increase my rate from $91 to $150 after a few months, claiming I was given a "promotional rate." I checked the internet and sure enough, there was a class action lawsuit filed against them for this business practice. They did make it easy for me to cancel, but of course now I need to find another storage vendor. read more

The customer care team here does a great job of taking care of their clients and has always been responsive and quick to take care of my needs. I stored my car here for a few months and I am very glad I chose this location, the price is approx 30-50 less than nearby locations, and the customer care is impeccable. Good job guys! read more

I just started my account couple of days ago, and so far so good. Mike was very professional and pleasant at the same time. He explained all the details and answered all the questions I had. I am closing out my account at this facility and moving my belongings elsewhere. In 3 years, Extra Space Storage has raised the cost of my small 5'x10' storage locker by almost 50%, from $65 to $93. That's almost $2 a square foot... my whole apartment is less than $1 a square foot, and has carpeting! This latest increase came as a complete surprise - I did not get any notice, save for the brand new $10 increase when they auto-drafted the money from my bank account. Extra Space Storage has quickly become the Turing Pharmaceuticals of Vernon Hills's self storage market. They've been buying up a lot of the storage facilities in the area and now that they command a large number of them, they're raising their rates because they know people have limited options elsewhere. It's a disgusting and criminal practice. I should also note that despite my particular locker being completely inside its building with no walls adjacent to the outside, somehow I managed to end up with a lot of debris, dust, and junk from the outside spread across every surface in the little room. In addition, a box I removed recently had a little bonus for me: a dead mouse (along with evidence of a much larger infestation). I would rather sell every item in that little tiny cubby that ESS thinks is made of solid gold, than pay their highway robbery rates for another month. read more

We rented three units here, two "regular" and one climate controlled. No problems with the two regular units. Easy in, easy out. The climate controlled unit ended up with a roof leak of which they did not make us aware. Because we did not opt for their insurance coverage, one chair of a very expensive dining room set is potentially ruined and we have no recourse. I completely understand that we did not take the insurance. What I do not accept is that they have no responsibility to let the renter know that they have had a roof issue. Very surprising. read more
