My Mom's van has been experiencing a leak. It was confirmed the leak is coming from the power steering pump and hose. We wanted a second opinion. We came to Express Smog & Lube in Montclair a couple weeks ago. This place does more than smog and lube. They also do car repairs. One stop shop for your car maintenance needs! We spoke with George, the owner. He was very nice and helpful. He explained the process he would take to assess the leak and what would be entailed to fix it. Thank you George for taking the time to speak with us and sharing good information. Today I called them to schedule an appointment. I spoke with Danny. He was very kind and helpful. He provided specific instructions via videos on what we need to do when dropping off the vehicle. His extra attention and care was much appreciated. Thank you Danny for your time and efforts. Came in anticipating a wait but was relatively quick! The front waiting area was super clean and probably the cleanest mechanic shop waiting area I have ever seen. Pricing was fair - not expensive and around the same as others in the immediate area. The receptionist was sweet, approachable and nice! She greeted me and was an easy process. Cons: There was this older dude there (n who didn't greet me as I walked in and actually was staring me down as if I was doing something wrong and looked at me weird for interrupting his conversation with the receptionist. Had to get my car smog tested. I live near by and see the sign all the time. Came at 8 AM and they took it in right away. I was in and out with in 10 minutes. They sent the certification in electronically and gave me a receipt just in case the DMV says they never receive it. Good price, good service, good lobby. How often does it happen that the repairs actually cost less than the amount quoted? To me, not often. Yet that is what happened when I went to the Express Smog and Lube at their new location on Arrow Highway in Montclair. I had decided to go here based on a recommendation from my sister who trusts these mechanics. My air conditioning was not working well; it would fade in and out, which is very uncomfortable in this heat. After checking out the problem, I was quoted a cost of over $950. I really had no choice, so I set up the appointment to get it fixed. (They had to order the parts.) I brought my car in a few days later. When making the repairs, they found that one of the fans was working, so they didn't need a certain part. My total bill came to about $750 (since they could return the ordered part.) I am so impressed with their honesty and integrity. I wouldn't have known the difference, yet they treated me with respect. I will now be their customer for life. My brakes were squeaking so I took my Jeep in and they checked it out and told me there was still pad and I can go another 5000m. Last time they were doing an oil change and released a stuck seatbelt and both times no charge. They have done work for me and are always fair and honest. I found express smog and lube after dealing with a Jiffy Lube ripping off my 16 year old. They had charged him $160 and said he needed things done when he went in for an oil change. It was a nightmare, but something good came out of it. I found Lee and his guys at Express Smog & Lube! They don't work on commission and are always helpful and they actually care! I take my Buick Enclave (don't get one) & my son's old Acura. Let's just say they are both terrible cars with multiple problems. Lee and his team always give me advice and help me out. They always go above and beyond for us. Once they even took my son's car to Acura b/c they couldn't find the problem and they wanted to make sure I wasn't over charged there! Who does that???? It's hard going into mechanic shops as a woman or as a teenager. These are the ONLY guys I trust. I go in feeling like they are taking care of me and not worried about how they are going to "find" all kinds of things I need fixed! I went here to get a smog check done earlier this month. The guys working there were nice, if not very friendly. The smog check took about an hour, and cost $30. They had a sign stating that they would drop you off/pick you up if you wanted to leave while your work was done, but since it was only a smog check, I waited in the little waiting area. The old man, Glenn, is very, very nice. I like him a lot. I use to go to Discount Tires right in the same parking lot as this place and Glenn was there sometimes and even helped out; so when Discount Tires went out of business I thought I would try his son's shop. Unfortunately the son was NOT like the father. I went to get my van smogged and he (the son, I don't remember his name) was very rude. He acted like my questions were a nuisance and was sarcastic when I asked him about Discount Tires. I only wanted to know if they moved; I was still getting my work done at Express Smog, anyway. He was rather abrupt and I was left feeling very unappreciated as a customer. I don't need that kind of cocky disrespectful attitude when I get my car worked on. Now I have a newer more expensive car with newer more expensive needs... and guess what? I am not going to Express Smog & Lube for them! WORST smog shop to go to. After your car fails they try to rip you off and charge you 75 just to tell you what's wrong when most mechanics will tell you right on the spot what happened. And when you go back to get your free re smog test after you get your car fixed he still tries to tell you that something is wrong. I have never had a problem with a smog check, until now. The smog certification has always been electronically transmitted to the DMV with all other smog checks that I have had in my life. Not a problem with all of the other smog checks I have had in my life - I pay the money and wait about an hour until the car is finished. Well, not this time. I received a notice from DMV that I have an incomplete renewal because I did not complete the smog check (which I did and passed). I paid the $38.20 for the smog check, one would think that the electronic renewal would be complete - well not so. I called Express Smog & Lube and talked with a condescending, patronizing employee. I explained my problem, and the response was - well why didn't I call the DMV. As if it is all my fault, no it's not - it is Express Smog & Lube. The response was nothing of sorry. I called DMV, which I hate doing - everything takes forever - finally talked to a real person and I discovered I have to go to the DMV in person - which I really dislike doing. DO NOT GO. read more
