This is just a old woman who sells fine but overpriced bonsai in the back of our house. Also her garden her house surroundings were extremely messy - so no I don't take this place seriously... If you want real bonsai, go to "Fuji bonsai nursery" just 20min north. They have hundreds of bonsai at all price points, it's a real business and nursery, they have classes every week and more. My fiancé and I stumbled upon Exotic Bonsai as we were looking to start a bonsai collection of our very own. We drove to the location on the yelp review and somehow ended up in a neighborhood. We were confused and before driving away we saw a man walk out of his house and we asked if he knew where we could find bonsai trees. He told us to park and come with him to his backyard and introduced himself as Ray. He led us to his collection of bonsai trees tucked away in his backyard. There were so many types of bonsai's and they were all so beautiful! Ray was so knowledgeable and inviting and he answered all of our questions about taking care of our first bonsai tree. We walked away with a small bonsai of our very own to start our collection. Definitely recommend this spot to check out some beautiful bonsai trees! Phil and Rey were awesome. They have a modest assortment of bonsai from small (~5 years) to much larger (~70+ years), ranging from $50 and up. Their nursery is in the backyard of their home and I loved how welcoming they were; truly felt like I was stepping into a little world they've created. I bought a Japanese Juniper from them and it was beautiful, however, beware when using your credit card. I was told $75, but when I got my credit card alert, it showed $82. When I called to ask the guy about it (seeing as the charge went to James Sweet) he said, "it was tax." Don't say one price and then charge another. I do love my bonsai, but that was sneaky and I don't appreciate it. read more

Fely and Reynaldo are so friendly and knowledgeable, and walking into their backyard to see the bonsai is like stepping into a secret wonderland. You'd never know such a gem existed here in an unsuspecting neighborhood of LA! The bonsai themselves are astounding, varying widely in species and age, and Fely described to us the differences in how each needs to be cared for. Decades of work have gone into many of these plants. This is in a residential neighborhood, and not open all the time, so do call in advance to make sure they're accepting visitors (especially right now during the pandemic). This is my first, and most likely my only yelp. Rey deserves every 5 star review he receives. His knowledge and love for bonsai show in every one of his creations. He starts them off in the ground creating a strong root system for 4-8 years before moving them into pots. Many of his bonsai are 25+ years old. What a hidden gem in LA. read more

This is a small home-based bonsai nursery run by the owner, Reynaldo Roter. I found this gem while looking for my very first bonsai and Reynaldo could not have been nicer. Most of his trees are on the order of 15 yrs and older and he has probably 50 or so in stock. He has a great deal of nursery material going as well. Being my first plant, I wasn't looking to spend a great deal, but Reynaldo took care of me and I left with a well-trained 15 yo japanese boxwood for $40 - can't beat that!. He also threw in a small ficus pre-bonsai. It seems he really cares about his craft and is interested in sharing his passion with others.
