It is very close to the Borough Hall train station, close to Jay Street- Metrotech and various other buses and public forms of transport. In fact, I thought the salon was a general spa as opposed to a salon suite of different hairdressers and beauty services. I am used to this type of establishment because I had a hairstylist who worked in a similar space when I lived outside of NYC. There are various ways to enter. My hairstylist gave me a code to enter and you can either call for the stylist to get you up or you can get a QR code. The lobby to the salons are on the first floor while the actual booths are on the second floor. There are stairs and an elevator. There are multiple couches and comfy benches on the second floor so you can wait for your appointment. There are stations for coffee and tea that my stylist told me to take advantage of. There is artwork all over and the color scheme makes it not sterile but not too bright. There is a vending machine onsite but since the location is close to many eateries (chopt is next door) you don't have to worry about access. I had a great time with my stylist Lilian. She came on time. She asked me questions about my desires and goals and gave me recommendations that I can use in my free time. I look forward to using her services in the future.

Photos were on Yelp (11/19/2013 Yelp removed the photos of my hair before, during and after the service, presumably at the owners request). I've never seen a Yelp review where the option to add photos was removed so this was clearly done on purpose. The service was originally in July 2012. Photos are on my blog (yelp allows links in profiles). Just search Red Room. I so wanted to like OMHH Red Room Luxe Salon for my straight styles but unfortunately this natural salon just did not prove to be a positive experience. I had been checking out this natural hair salon (advertised as a "blow dry bar") for a while and met the owner, Debra, a few times, including at the African Street Festival at Commodore Barry Park, where I was given a sample of the herbal hair & body wash. She had natural hair (extensions) so again I thought I hit the jackpot. I mistakenly believe that women with natural hair know how to deal with my hair. I have been proven wrong time and time again. I had been wearing twist outs for a few weeks, trying out different products, and the twist out I wore to the salon was done with my own whipped shea butter and aloe mix. My hair was combed out a bit with a wide toothed comb (looked like a shower comb) and rinsed with warm water then washed, twice, with the same hair & body wash that I stated was drying to my hair the prior week. I suspect that the shea butter coating on my hair stopped it from acting as a clarifying shampoo. An OMHH herbal conditioner was used as well as an OMHH light oil and I was placed under a hood dryer for about 15 minutes. I had expected that Hair Rules product would be used in my hair since Debra mentioned several times when we spoke that she uses and likes the Hair Rules line, which is also sold at her shop. Instead she used her own brand, OMHH. I was NOT given the option to choose my own products from her collection and I was not given the option to use Hair Rules products. The conditioner was rinsed out and I was then placed back under the hood dryer to recline for a bit with loose hair. When I asked Debra about this technique, since I was getting a blow out, she said that she likes to remove some of the moisture from the hair before blow drying. I immediately became worried since I know it's more difficult to blow dry my hair once it's already dry i.e. Dominican blow outs on dried, roller set hair use a ton of heat to get my curly roots straight. My hair dries really fast. Although my hair was loose (not roller set) I went along with it to see how this dry before blow drying technique would work. During the blow dry no heat protectant was used; however, my hair was blown out on a cool setting for the majority of the blow out. There was no brush or comb attachment used - just a shower comb. I asked Debra about this and she said she does not like to use a comb attachment since it pulls too much on the hair - breakage presumably? I rarely lose hair when I do my blow out at home so I was unsure of this reasoning. Most salons blow out my natural hair with a brush or comb attachment to make it more smooth, which means less passes of the flat iron. The blow out was not comfortable at first. Debra did listen to me and was more gentle; however, I still was not pleased with the technique of trying to blow out dry natural hair. After the blow out my hair felt very dry, which is not normal for me after a blow out. I mentioned that my hair was looking rough and it felt dry and was told that next time I should get a steam treatment. There was a steamer in the corner near the wash basins. Debra stretched a section of my hair down to show me how much she thought should be trimmed, which was at least 1 inch. I said no, I was not willing to trim that much. We then got into a discussion about the knots in my hair, sections of hair that were not really knots at all but hair that had not been combed out well. She wanted to cut my hair up to the "knots". I explained that I have single strands knots since my small curls, some 1/8 of an inch, wrap around themselves and form tiny knots on individual strands. I told Debra that I rarely wear my hair straight so the single strand knots do not bother me. I then began to pull apart the "knotted" sections of hair to show Debra that it was just tangled hair that was not combed out. I did not feel that my hair required a 1 inch cut. I had not used heat in six months and for 3 of those months I was in twist extensions. My blow out looked like a fluffy afro from the 70s, not like a sleek salon blow out that was prepared for flat ironing. I even said that out loud that I had a 70s afro. When the flat ironing started, I was again worried. No heat protectant was used. I ended up leaving the salon without letting her finish. I washed, blew out and flat ironed my hair when I got home since I wanted to make sure it was not dama

Thank the sweet baby Jesus this crew has finally opened their own digs. Like many others that have written reviews, I too have followed one of the Exhibit partner hair stylist extraordinaires from salon to salon, after first meeting her at a walk-in appointment at Hair Metal, nearly 4 years ago. You need a haircut? GO TO ALICE. I've had short, pixie-ish haircuts since freshman year of high school, and Alice is the only person in the entirety of my hair history that has struck the perfect balance between feminine and badass. She has put up with every attempt to grow my hair out, only to return two months later demanding that she "get this thing off my head," and knows exactly what I want. She pays unbelievable, unparalleled attention to detail, and I'm able to go longer between cuts for it because it doesn't end up looking like a rabid possum on my head while the cut growing out. She has a sixth sense-like ability to determine the exact style vision I see in my head, yet am unable to describe to her using actual adult words. She can take a descriptor like "Maybe like, longer bangs?" and have me looking as close to Michelle Williams as I'm ever gonna get. She really, really listens, and takes pride in the work she produces. Haircut skillz aside, the salon itself is inviting, bright, easily accessible, and far more affordable than most places you'll find the area. The ladies are also putting a major emphasis on community involvement, and plan to feature local artists, have community gatherings, and have charitable days where proceeds from some of their cuts will go to charity. Sometimes, there might even be wine! I cannot express enough happiness, both for myself and the rad ladies of this shop, that Exhibit exists. I will not be getting my hairs did anywhere else, and you shouldn't either (especially if you are a lady looking for a short cut). read more

Exhibit is a cute and intimate salon with a great location and amazing prices. They support the art scene by featuring artwork and hosting gallery parties which is pretty cool! I have trusted Alice with my hair for over three years and would follow her into hell if it meant she'd continue to cut my hair. In the time I've known Alice, she has taken me from long hair to short, from brunette to blonde - AND has even saved me from myself when I bleached my hair on my own and turned it orange. Here's what you can expect from an Alice haircut: great conversation, expert attention to detail including the ability to work with your desired haircut vision and apply what will look & work best with your hair type and face shape, happiness, and (my personal favorite) hair compliments from strangers weeks after your hair has been cut. Alice always recommends the most amazing product for my haircut and teaches me how to use it correctly. She always gives me a cheaper product recommendation because she doesn't like to push product. But I continue to buy from her salon because I have yet to be disappointed. Last tip - as the salon is on the smaller side, they can get booked pretty quickly so it's a good idea to plan in advance. Okay so this is my second time here the first was to get a cut .....which wasn't bad done by Jocelyn. Then I came in for a "color correction " and a cut. My hair was in pretty bad shape when i came in but after dropping $370 on a color correction i expected the toners and whatever else was put in my hair to actually last more than a week. All she basically did was ombre my hair (not worth 300) which got my hair back to its initial shitty state (it was ombre underneath all she did was remove the damn box dye which i could have used color oops for $12) , the orange was not lifted but instead toned and even that didn't last I'm back to bright orange. I don't know why i spent so much money here and now I'm still struggling again because everything has faded within a week. Not coming back. read more

With the brick wall and huge mirrors the space makes you feel very comfortable. Ashlee always is great with changing up my hair both cut and color. So when she opened her hip new space I couldn't wait to check it out. Megan did such an awesome job styling my curly mop that I finally had the courage to branch out from my old go to, a long unimaginative slightly layered do. Friend of a friend convinced me to try Ashlee at Exhibit , even though I've been going to the same stylist for 4 years. Glad my buddy is persuasive because I've been going to Ashlee for 3 months now, and it's always a perfect haircut. Price was the same I was paying at Dramatics, but much much better quality. She finally told me to google pictures of ombré.... She offered to have me come back and get it fixed for $80 to cover the cost of products but I will definitely be staying away. I was excited for all the good reviews but I'm not comfortable with a place that will spend more time trying to change your mind than trying to figure out what it is that you wanted in the first place. My friend did get a quick, basic trim that she was happy with. Owner was also generally kind of rude to my stylist (who was very nice and friendly) - that's just another reason for me to stay away.

Would understand if it was fees applied to a future booking, as nothing in their website COVID policy states that this is not an option.* Let me also note that I tried to call multiple times *at least 3x* before my appointment time started to notify them but their phone was off the hook, so I had to email. I told them I only needed a light trim, could skip the blowout, etc. but they said no, and refused my business. They then proceeded to book me for another appointment and I asked if they could help apply some credit to the next appointment. Again was refused. *Even though there's no a policy in place that says this is not an option. I had my lawyer look over it as well to confirm.* *I had pulled up to the salon to enter and they called my phone as I was outside to cancel. I was in my car and waved politely, and am being told that made the staff "uncomfortable" by even showing up? I had an appointment! I wasn't even allowed to walk in and discuss a rebooking with them. I was super polite about it and gave multiple opportunities to amend the situation. Still waiting for this to be amended, but not holding out any hope here.* Now I just got a notification about my next appointment being cancelled (without me asking to cancel it). *The salon assumed, and is now stating they don't want my business because I'm not 100% happy with how things went down. I wouldn't want them to cut my hair now anyhow, I'm very particular with who touches my head, and wouldn't trust them after this event.* *I asked to speak to the owner to resolve this peacefully and was denied. Courtney I know you are seeing this.. would love to hear from you - please call me to resolve this peacefully.* This place is rude, unprofessional, and I would never recommend going here *if you value good business ethics, this place is not for you.* Worst customer service ever. *I tried to do a good thing in supporting a small business in a difficult time, and I'm being called entitled by the owner multiple times. I'm a very fair person and just upset about this situation.* I'm highly offended.

Very fortunately for me I didn't have to languish for long before I found Juliann! I first started seeing Juliann in the summer of 2020 when they were visiting New York from San Francisco. After months of peak-pandemic neglect, my hair desperately needed to have some life breathed into it and they did an incredible job chopping off my numerous split ends and bringing my hair to a lovely shade of lavender. Since then I've entrusted them with taking me from from varying shades of pink--including a pretty pastel shade that's still the lightest I've ever healthily pulled off to date (no mean feat for my very dark Asian hair)--to subtle ashy highlights and everything in between! You can imagine how ecstatic I am that they now have a permanent spot in New York where I can have all my hair whims satisfied! Aside from being a masterful colorist and generally awesome human being, the haircuts they give me are wonderfully textured and grow out super well. I also really appreciate that they are mindful of my hair health/goals and don't try to upsell me on products or services I don't need. Greenpoint is a trek for me but Juliann is more than worth it! When Juliann told me they opened a salon in Brooklyn, I half-joked that I would have to come see them in NY one day...well that day has come :) Yes y'all, they're so good that I have traveled hundreds of miles to get a haircut and color with them Not only is Juliann an ARTISTE with balayage and highlights and fun color, so much so my hair stays looking good for months after (needing less maintenance than with other stylists in the past!)--they're an absolute joy to be around and they make you feel like you've known them forever. As for the salon itself--I love the ambiance and pops of bright colors :) It feels like a super happy place with lots of personality, and reflects how I feel inside. Definitely check out Bangin Hair BK if you're looking for your next haircut, you won't regret it and you'll spend the whole appointment laughing :)

The owner MoRiya and stylist Athena has created a wonderful and calming atmosphere. They provided me with a glass of sparkling water , snacks and a robe, adding to the already warm welcome. I was in and out of there within 45 mins max!! The salon uses ultra high-end, clean products that I can already tell left my hair feeling much more manageable and hydrated. I've been on the lookout for a salon that specializes in textured hair, and I'm so glad I found Oli & Wylde.
